I like to think while Sonic would help Chao here and there but never claim one as his own, Shadow wouldn’t be able to leave one behind the same way (especially while they’re young). Maybe he would come across an egg in the SA2 era without really knowing what he’s getting into…or finds a chao egg alone or in a precarious place and accidentally helps it hatch. Basically my own dad shadow AU but instead of a kid it’s a chao….
