I’m gonna say something and the Movie!Charles defenders ain’t gonna like it — Hank’s crashout in Dark Pheonix was justified.

Okay before you start screaming and crying because ‘oh woe is mee poor Charles that whole movie was just HATING him for no reason’ hear me out.

Hank’s crashout makes a hell of a lot more sense when you think of it as a culmination of all the shit he’s had to deal with since first class rather than just isolated within the movie. Do I think him wanting to kill Jean was an out of character escalation that shouldn’t have been written in? Yes. But if I had to deal with all the shit Hank dealt with since first class, I’d start tweaking aswell.

First class — he gets outed as a mutant without his consent by Charles within less than 5 minutes of meeting him, gets relentlessly bullied by Alex for his looks, has to grapple with his insecurity and how it effects the others around him then tries to make a cue and TURNS BLUE. He then GOES OFF TO WAR. And this is after already witnessing a death of one friend and the betrayal of another. THEN the girl he’s in love with LEAVES after HIS MENTOR/somewhat FATHER FIGURE IS PARALYSED by is best friend who’s said love interest is having a weird pedo-adjacent situationship with.

Then DOFP — Hank finally manages to make a suppressant for his mutation (because no matter what you think walking around all big and blue in the 70s when mutants are still only JUST being discovered isn’t the safest). And the guy who used to bully you who you’re now friends with (???) is DRAFTED into the Vietnam war, your other friend disappeared and ends up DEAD and you accidentally get your best friend/mentor hooked on the mutation suppression drugs you made to curb the physical attributes of your mutation while trying to make sure he doesn’t implode too far into himself while also taking care of the estate and making sure everything doesn’t go to SHIT. And THEN some big burly TIME TRAVELER shows up with METAL CLAWS, BREAKS INTO YOUR FUCKING HOUSE and now you have to SAVE THE WORLD AND THE PRESIDENT AND SOME RANDOM FUCKING THIRD GUY WHOS ANTI-MUTANT FOR SOME REASON?????? You have to help these people BREAK INTO THE PENTAGON, and save your ex situationship from getting experimented on/KIDNAPPED and THEN after ALL THAT, watch her run away off to who who KNOWS fucking where, leaving you alone AGAIN.

And APOCALYPSE — don’t get me STARTED on apocalypse. Hank spends his every day trying to explain to Charles that he can’t coddle all the kid because they are MUTANTS and can and WILL experience oppression and prejudice due to that and they WILL need to know how to fight back, just for Charles to be on some “nooooo peace and love” ringo star BULLSHIT and then when your friend who got drafted comes to sign his brother up for the mutant schooling program he fucking DIES IN AN EXPLOSION that was low key your fault while he was trying to save Charles and then as soon as you get out of the explosion the government comes and KIDNAPS you and now you have to fight a LITERAL ANCIENT GOD and then you get back and FINALLY- FINALLY CHARLES LISTENS TO YOU ABOUT THE X-MEN THING. Finally teaching the kids how to defend themselves and using their powers for good and THEN-

Dark Pheonix happens. And you lose the girl you’ve been fighting to be with for the past 40 years. I’d crashout too. Don’t act like YOU wouldn’t.
