i woke up at 1:29 AM, and now i’m thinking about the fact that sleeping right now is strenuous for me because i just got four piercings (one on my left ear, one on my face, and two on my right ear). therefore, we’re sleepin like a vampire in a coffin. sometimes it’s sad. because when you sleep, you use so many different positions to stay comfy. where as i can only have very few:(

Orbits of Potentially Hazardous Asteroids : Are asteroids dangerous? Some are, but the likelihood of a dangerous asteroid striking the Earth during any given year is low. Because some past mass extinction events have been linked to asteroid impacts, however, humanity has made it a priority to find and catalog those asteroids that may one day affect life on Earth. Pictured here are the orbits of the over 1,000 known Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs). These documented tumbling boulders of rock and ice are over 140 meters across and will pass within 7.5 million kilometers of Earth – about 20 times the distance to the Moon. Although none of them will strike the Earth in the next 100 years – not all PHAs have been discovered, and past 100 years, many orbits become hard to predict. Were an asteroid of this size to impact the Earth, it could raise dangerous tsunamis, for example. To investigate Earth-saving strategies, NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) is planned for launch later this year. Of course rocks and ice bits of much smaller size strike the Earth every day, usually pose no danger, and sometimes creating memorable fireball and meteor displays. via NASA

Our Parker Solar Probe Just Touched the Sun!

For the first time in history, a spacecraft has touched the Sun. Our Parker Solar Probe flew right through the Sun’s atmosphere, the corona. (That’s the part of the Sun that we can see during a total solar eclipse.)

This marks one great step for Parker Solar Probe and one giant leap for solar science! Landing on the Moon helped scientists better understand how it was formed. Now, touching the Sun will help scientists understand our star and how it influences worlds across the solar system.

Unlike Earth, the Sun doesn’t have a solid surface (it’s a giant ball of seething, boiling gases). But the Sun does have a superheated atmosphere. Heat and pressure push solar material away from the Sun. Eventually, some of that material escapes the pull of the Sun’s gravity and magnetism and becomes the solar wind, which gusts through the entire solar system.

But where exactly does the Sun’s atmosphere end and the solar wind begin? We’ve never known for sure. Until now!

In April 2021, Parker Solar Probe swooped near the Sun. It passed through a massive plume of solar material in the corona. This was like flying into the eye of a hurricane. That flow of solar stuff — usually a powerful stream of particles — hit the brakes and went into slow-motion.

For the first time, Parker Solar Probe found itself in a place where the Sun’s magnetism and gravity were strong enough to stop solar material from escaping. That told scientists Parker Solar Probe had passed the boundary: On one side, space filled with solar wind, on the other, the Sun’s atmosphere.

Parker Solar Probe’s proximity to the Sun has led to another big discovery: the origin of switchbacks, zig-zag-shaped magnetic kinks in the solar wind.

These bizarre shapes were first observed in the 1990s. Then, in 2019, Parker Solar Probe revealed they were much more common than scientists first realized. But they still had questions, like where the switchbacks come from and how the Sun makes them.

Recently, Parker Solar Probe dug up two important clues. First, switchbacks tend to have lots of helium, which scientists know comes from the solar surface. And they come in patches.

Those patches lined up just right with magnetic funnels that appear on the Sun’s surface. Matching these clues up like puzzle pieces, scientists realized switchbacks must come from near the surface of the Sun.

Figuring out where switchbacks come from and how they form will help scientists understand how the Sun produces the solar wind. And that could clue us into one of the Sun’s biggest mysteries: why the Sun’s atmosphere is much, much hotter than the surface below.

Parker Solar Probe will fly closer and closer to the Sun. Who knows what else we’ll discover?

hufflepuff: kind smiles, gentle touches. knowing the ins and outs of every situation, nimble fingers weapons against destruction. loyalty, hard work, doing the right thing even when it hurts. indulging in wrong things for the sake of others. knowing that people exist, walk the earth, have minds and souls and hearts that synchronize like symphonies. the world needs more goodness, and change starts at the fingertips of the observant. vines and greenhouses, the smell of dew and grass and petrichor. the soft pulse that licks at your throat, steadies in your ears. secrets whispered behind hands and feet bumping feet under tables. pinkies that link and eyes that shine. being one with your environment, because inner-peace doesn't have to be boring. friendship, above all else, because why live when you can love?

ravenclaw: long nights and cold mornings. ink-stained fingertips and the smell of old parchment. couches and comforters and cleaning out a soul by stuffing it with more. the mind is a weapon, and to be the best, you have to earn it. words that are never-ending but all too short. blankets sewn from dreams and wishes, a fantasy to rock one to sleep. stars that glint and moons that guide. lips that are chaste and loud, rivalry to the bone. rumbling stomachs because knowledge is food, and everyone needs sustenance. kisses shared in dark libraries and darker corners. secret glances through stacks and shaking hands with threaded fingers. earl grey tea and rainy thursday evenings. the lust for knowledge of any kind, because life is too short to not learn all you can. questions that earn reprimands and dares that earn regret. pushing and pulling and taking and testing, because the power you taste on your tongue is sweet.

slytherin: competitions, fights, winning. no pauses, no breaks, no breaths. ambition that knocks around in the skull, filling one with a unique sort of drive. tongues like snakes and curses like monsters. be what others fear, so they may never test what terrifies them. poker games and firewhisky—injuries healed by subconscious affection. trust in your friends, but even more in your enemies. to be one's greatest critic, even when it hurts. cold fingers and warm pockets, the perfect size for hiding held hands. observing, understanding, strategizing. pros and cons and lists that never end. knowing what you want, how you want it, where you want it. and even if you don't know what it is, you do understand that you will get it. silk sheets and old tomes, runes like precious art. drawing temporary tattoos on skin, being we are ever-changing, and you mustn't be stagnant. sarcasm and spitting insults, the sensation of superiority when surrounded by friends. sympathy is good, but never to share. be quiet, be discreet, be the best.

but when people draw the cresent moon and where the dark, shaddowed part of the moon is they put in stars

like studdenly that part of the moon is invisible instead of just being in the shadow
