Okay, so I definitely agree with the people who advise writers that bilingual people don’t randomly switch languages when talking to people, or “forget to switch” when around people who only speak x language and not y
But do any other bilingual people ever mutter in a combination to themselves?
I just grumbled at my database “Mr. Alfonso, dónde the fuck are you?”
Other people please tell me you also do this. 🤣🤣
#yes!#I’ll be pissed off and muttering in French but realize I can express a certain idea better in English and switch. then switch back#even in my dreams it just flip flops between languages#bilingual

Sometimes I'm just reading something in a language different from my mother tongue, whether is an article for college, a book, fanfic or simply a post here and I'm stuck with the fact that I'm indeed understanding it. And I stand there like holy shit I can understand this, I'm reading it and it makes sense and I know how to modify that sentence to make it easier or harder to understand, or could name a few synonyms for that word and even antonyms and is so so amazing like our mind are amazing, we can!! learn!! so !! many !! writing systems !! and!! sentence structure !! and!! grammar !! and !! vocabulary!! and whole ass LANGUAGES!!
#yeah!!!!!#and the first time u dream in a new language#and not just like a garbly vaguely bilingual dream#but like u are actually speaking fully articulate conjugated clear and creative sentences in your dream#bilingual

For all my bilingual/multilingual babes:
Does your voice change when you speak English? Like my voice is a tone lower in English and even becomes a bit hoarse?
But then I speak Spanish and I'm Dora the explorer's big sister🤦🏻♀️
#the voice change is so so real#in English (native language) my voice is fairly high and feminine (it depends on who I’m speaking to the context etc)#in French however???? low and gravelly#sound like I’ve been gargling pavement gravel#in Spanish and Urdu (so far from fluent it’s not even funny) my voice is fairly high again#bilingual problems

being bilingual is all fun and games until you're trying to write something in your native language but your brain keeps giving you scenes in your second language and you're like "this is NOT what I ordered"
#KSJKSKDK I’ll be trying to write something and the little pretentious Frenchman in my brain pops out like#ohhonhonhon bonjour bitch je ne sais pas comment communiquer cette idée en anglais mais ✨si tu veux✨#je peux te donner un poème en français!! d’ailleurs le poème est le plus terrible chose dans le monde teehee 🥖🇫🇷#French#language#franglais#bilingual meme#bilingual#bilingual things#bilingual problems

Had a nightmare in Portuguese and woke up agitated at 3am thinking in full French. Turned on the bed and saw I had a message. I spent the next 5 minutes staring at my cellphone trying to make sense of what seemed like nonsensical keymashing -until I realised I was trying to understand Spanish with an English focused brain. I just, what
truly, what
(native language is Spanish btw lmao)

a question for my fellow bilinguals/multilinguals/polyglots:
#does this make sense??#like okay wait let me give an example#I’ll finish speaking with someone in French and then I’ll switch tasks and go to like reply to an email or something#but my brain is still in French Mode™️ so I start writing in French even tho thr email’s receipient doesn’t speak French#and then I have to pause and like translate back in my head and kind of recalibrate back to English#do u get what I mean???#franglish#French#bilingual#bilingual meme#bilingual things#multilingual#polyglot#languages#language learning#polls#French polls#language polls#bilingual polls

exactly! use she/her for me the same way u might use it for wrath (la colère divine), moon (la lune), and electricity (l'électricité).
i ended up liking how gendered french is solely because i can say that i want people to use he/him pronouns for me the same way they use it for angels, blood and blunts
#technically i use she/they pronouns#but i mean if you're just going to use she/her for me w/ no 'they'....then do it like this hehe#franglais#french#bilingual#enby

“✨french is so sexy✨”
“💗💗 french is the language of love 💗💗”
“🌸 the french language is so beautiful 🌸”
WRONG. Look me in the eyes. Regardez-moi dans les yeux. I’m so so serious right now. SPEAKING AS A FRANCOPHONE, French sounds like a dog hacking up a piece of plastic. Listen to me say « écureuil » and then tell me French is sexy pls I’m begging you

People think being bilingual is having fluency in two languages, when the reality is that it’s the ability to speak two languages as broken as possible.

I know this is a rly basic idea, but it’s honestly so wild to me that the brain works like this. Like, I will be struggling for words in my second language, confused and frustrated, and then I listen to someone speak in that language for 10 mins and it’s as though it unlocks a vault in my mind and I’m back to being fluent. Like huH???

omg no need for apologies!!
it's genuinely not confusing at all + this helps so much!! merci pour cette réponse si attentionnée + sérieuse ! :-)
de plus, love the side note of, "the trickiest part is when you turn 18 (you are legally an adult but you're basically a worm)" mdr
[eng]: okay this is a question for ppl who speak French as their native language! i speak it as a second language, right? but i’ve always been curious: what is the transition like when it comes to shifting from using “vous” to address a person to using “tu”?? is it like a friendship/intimacy upgrade?? does there need to be a conversation about it before hand (like “what are we?”).
