I love how Joel has progressively gained more friends across the series’

3rd life - he was a lone man with a pack of wolves, rabid, hungry

Last life - his alliances were tenuous at best and solely depended on the amount of lives he’d had, even then, he was mostly alone

Double life - he has someone this time, against all odds, even if they are forced to be friends. he grows to like etho though, for who he is, not just because they’re soul bound

Limited Life - he has his two best friends to his left and right, his bad boys, his happiest season thus far. Sure, his life burns quickly but it burns brightly, and that’s enough

Secret Life - He’s got stable, sound friendships with his mounders. He’s learning, growing, figuring out how to keep and maintain relationships, how to work together. Him, his mounders, his wife. It’s all he needs.

Or so he thinks.

Then we come to Wild Life - his sole focus is his family. It builds and grows and shrinks with time, but he always has friends, always has allies. It’s him and Gem, the bamboozlers, etho, the spanners . It’s him and his friends against the world. He has his rage under control, he’s smart, he’s happy

He wins.

He’s learned how to love again.

Joel is a pack of hungry wolves. He is burning red bloodlust. He is flames curling up the side of a hastily made, ultimately loved, ship. He is the fine line between love and hate. He is sacrifice and loyalty and vengeance. He is a victor.

He’s played it safe this season - he’s bid his time, taken a breath when the burning anger gets too much, made the smart choice rather than wherever his impulsivity wants to take him.

Because that is was Joel is at his core - impulsive, intensely so. He loves as quickly as he hates, he forms grudges at the same time he forges alliances. No matter how many times he’s knocked down, he rises from the ashes to fight. It’s what he does. It’s what is expected of him.

But as he stands here, blood on his hands and dripping from his head and the arrow wound in his shoulder, Joel is not anger. He is not flames or fire or ashes. He is just… Joel. Human, not infallible, just the last one standing.

He never thought he’d be the last one standing.
