Today is The National Coming Out Day but I feel I would rather come in ... and wait for better days.

Feeling the need to advocate one's preferences and shouting them out to others is just as oppressing as forcing left-handed child to use its right hand because it is “normal”. Yeah – it will work on some but at what cost. You don't have to defend yourself. Ignorance does not tollerate perfect argumentation. The need for day like this should be offending to people of all races, religions, beliefs, and gender identities. Self-identity should not be an object of appraisal by anyone outside us. There is just a certain crowd of individuals who desperately feels the need to distinguish themselves - religion fanatics, sexists, homophobes, racists - ignorant people in general. Honestly – I don’t think anyone should care who are you sleeping with, how do you dress, how do you call yourself, or if you believe in God, or eat meat. This is not what makes you bad; this is what differentiates you from the rest. If it doesn’t cause damage, is not bad. And it is ironic how one of the most repressed parts of our society – the LGBTQ community – is probably the most prejudiced and judgmental. Here’s a short excerpt from an article by Amrou Al-Kadhi for the web platform i-D - “...And here are some things I've bumped into on my virtual meanderings - "White Guys Only. No Terrorists, Chinks, Currys. No Fems" (taken from a Grindr Profile), and, "Only into: FIT BLOKES, smooth, muscled arses & quads…NO: TWINKS, Chests like "toast racks in wet paper bags, & NO HAIR" (taken from a Grindr Profile)...”* I believe this would be applicable for all the rest of the LGBTQ communities. Sexualizing our differences to such extent and idealising sex for me just proves that aggressively coming out is a way of showing how provocative one could be. We should work towards a society in which everyone could be whoever they want to be without having to exclusively proclaim it in order to draw attention. This however will not happen by conducting a gay orgy in the centre of Baghdad. This will be effective like building Democracy by bombings. It is through education and guidance. Setting an example. No one should need to come out. We are all out. And fiercely declaring our uniqueness, queerness and desire to defy, we end up even more estranged from the world we accuse of casting us aside. There is nothing to come out of – it is all in our heads.
