Draco Malfoy in Handsome Robes

I’ve already mentioned here that Harry thinks Draco is attractive, but probably avoids admitting it to himself for classic “we’re enemies” reasons. So there I was, rereading HP HBP and...

I'd like to draw attention to this moment from the scene at Madam Malkin’s:

“A teenage boy with a pale, pointed face and white-blond hair appeared from behind the rack, wearing a handsome set of dark green robes that glittered with pins around the hem and the edges of the sleeves. He strode to the mirror and examined himself; it was a few moments before he noticed Harry, Ron, and Hermione reflected over his shoulder. His light gray eyes narrowed.” — HP HBP – Chapter 6: Draco’s Detour

A few interesting points about this passage:

This is, as far as I know, the first time Harry describes Draco’s clothing as handsome.

It’s also the first time Harry sees Draco after the summer break — both of them now sixteen.

Harry silently watches Draco standing in front of the mirror in his handsome robes, and only reacts after Draco makes an unpleasant comment about Hermione.

Considering that the order of the descriptions might reflect where Harry's gaze landed first, it's interesting to note that his attention goes first to Draco’s face and hair (as usual), then to the elegant clothes he's wearing, and only afterward to Draco admiring himself in the mirror.

Right after this encounter, Harry decides to follow Draco for the first time that year, when he sees him again walking alone through Diagon Alley.

The use of the word handsome to describe Draco’s robes might just reflect surprise at how striking the clothing itself is. However, Harry doesn’t usually make that kind of remark about Draco’s clothes. When Draco isn’t in school uniform, what Harry tends to notice is that he usually wears high collars, is always very covered up, all buttoned down.

Take a look at how he describes Draco at the Yule Ball:

“Malfoy was in front; he was wearing dress robes of black velvet with a high collar, which in Harry’s opinion made him look like a vicar.” — HP GoF – Chapter 23: The Yule Ball

Harry clearly didn’t like that outfit.

From a Drarry angle, this “slip” might just show that Harry was genuinely caught off guard by how good Draco looked — or at least by how well those robes suited him.

If it had been just a neutral observation, Harry might’ve thought something like “handsome robes that were completely wasted on Malfoy.” And we know Harry wouldn’t miss a chance to roast Draco Malfoy.

But he DOESN'T. Instead, Harry notes the robes as handsome — and watches Draco examining himself in the mirror. If, however, JKR’s intention was just, I don’t know, to suggest that the robes were expensive — you know, to reinforce that whole “look how rich and snobby he is” idea — she could’ve gone with adjectives like elegant, costly, or something along those lines.

It’s also interesting that in this same scene, Harry begins to confront Narcissa Malfoy with his usual teenage boldness and insolence. For some reason, it reminded me of James teasing Snape when he knew Lily was watching.

And then this happens:

‘I see that being Dumbledore’s favourite has given you a false sense of security, Harry Potter. But Dumbledore won’t always be there to protect you.’ Harry looked mockingly all around the shop. ‘Wow … look at that … he’s not here now! So why not have a go? They might be able to find you a double cell in Azkaban with your loser of a husband!’ Malfoy made an angry movement towards Harry, but stumbled over his overlong robe. Ron laughed loudly. ‘Don’t you dare talk to my mother like that, Potter!’ Malfoy snarled. — HP HBP – Chapter 6: Draco’s Detour

Okay, first of all: when Draco stumbles, Harry mentions that Ron laughed — but he doesn’t say whether he laughed too. However what that tells us is that Harry wasn’t just focused on Narcissa during the scene. He was also keeping an eye on Draco.

I know Harry’s hot-headed and impulsive, and yeah, he never backs down — not even to adults. But still, that whole argument with Narcissa has always felt weird and kind of over the top to me. Like, Narcissa seemed more focused on avoiding a scene, and Harry was confronting her like he was facing off with Draco himself. He wants to make it clear that he’s not afraid of her.

Throughout the whole argument, Harry is being sarcastic and cheeky. He’s clearly showing off — showing off his boldness and corage. Harry only truly gets angry when Narcissa mentions Sirius — and let’s be honest, he’s the one who threw the first low blow.

But who is he showing off for? He knows Narcissa, at best, sees him as an annoying brat — she shows nothing but irritation and contempt throughout the entire scene. Hermione seems desperate to get him to shut up and back off. He doesn't seem to be paying much attention to Ron. BUT... he definitely manages to get a reaction out of Draco.

To conclude… In the passage:

“It was a few moments before he noticed Harry, Ron, and Hermione reflected over his shoulder,”

Draco didn’t immediately realize the trio was there AND we can assume that Harry had time to watch him freely.

Funny conclusion (don’t take it seriously): Harry saw how good Draco looked after the summer — like, annoyingly good — and how those green robes were doing way too much for him, so he started strutting for Draco in the only way these two dumbasses know how to get each other’s attention.
