(Chase, 18, he/him/etc.; also at oceans-against-onions) I usually think about writing more than I actually write; characterization and worldbuilding are the two aspects that really hold my attention.

— I guess this is a thing? If not, just ignore me.
My name’s Em and I’m finally making a writeblr! I’m twenty-one, from New York, and I use she/her pronouns. I’ve been kinda curious about the writeblr community for a while now and always found it way too intimidating to try and join in, but now that I’m working on a novel, I figured I’d give it a go! I’ll mainly be posting stuff about my own WIP, checking out others’ WIPs, and reblogging writing resources and whatnot. I’m an anxious boi for SURE, but I’ll do my best to put myself out there since I love talking about writing (and reading too).
My main interest is fantasy, particularly YA, so feel free to holler at me if that’s your specialty also! I do have a WIP in that genre (my only WIP, since my attention span is way too limited to juggle multiple big writing projects at the same time); it’s still untitled at the moment which is annoying, but I’m sure the name will come to me eventually. In the meantime, I’m in my outlining phase and I do have a lot fleshed out, some of which you can check out on this page (please excuse the fact that it isn’t done! I got tired).
So yeah, I really don’t have any clue what I’m doing but I’m very excited to learn the ropes and get out there! Until I manage the energy to make some content, I’ll just be over here marveling at everyone else’s amazing stuff.
Oh, and any follows/likes/comments/asks will be from my main blog, hannahabbott!

I'm down, casual writing's the thing I usually finish
I kinda wanna pick a day, probably one of my days off this week, and write something completely out of my normal genre. Not an AU with my WIP characters; like no-planning no-prep don’t-even-have-half-an-hour-to-carve-out-a-character-description kind of writing. And see if I like it.
The more of this post I write the more I think about it and how it would go...
Like taking half an hour (AND NO MORE) to create a protag primarily but any characters created beyond that are fair game.
Then half an hour to outline as much as you can: whether this means the roughest full-story outline ever or the most detailed first chapter of your life.
Then a series of writing sprints for 3-5 hours (for me like... 20min sprints with 10min breaks would be ideal) where you just WRITE THIS TOTALLY UNPLANNED FOR NEW STORY and see how it goes.
Would anyone be interested in this?? Because now I kind of want to try it.

About the sloppiest WIP Post I've seen
...It's mine. Go figure, eh?
But, hey, better sloppy and here than perfect and non-existent. I've been putting this off for too long and I want to go ahead and make something, so this is just a giant puddle of information I'm dropping on your heads. Enjoy if that's your thing
Feroma is an empire created and ruled by The Gods. They brought the warring peoples together again, set up a system of priestly care for the common man, and chased off the false gods who tried to rip the people from safety. No one has too much to handle - people from non magic gens do the physical labor, while magic users take on the equally arduous task of bossing them around. With the Gods distant but loving guidence, Feroma truely is a paradise.
But some people don't give a rip about obeying that guidence.
Emeri is an order enforcer, a 'priest' tasked with makeing sure non-magic gens don't accidentally blow up a city while trying to turn their hair blue, or something similarly stupid. It's a lower class job, to be sure. Order Enforcers tend to be from magically weak gens. It'd be somewhat shameful, seeing your family's low status be made public... except, Em isn't reeeeally supposed to be there,
at all. They have no gen affiliation.
After over two years' worth of string pulling and lying, Em's managed to integrate themself into a friend's gen. Get a shot at a decent life. But a lot of annoying testing, training, and being written off as inferior, Em finally impressed their teachers in magical skill - aaaand still got assigned to be an enforcer anyway.
Still. Despite the setbacks, despite the continued snobbishness of higher gens, despite the 'blemishless' rival showing them up at every turn, despite the fact that Emeri isn't supposed to be there at all, they aren't gonna give up that easily
gonna gup that easily.
And hey, the rash of magic misuses they were sent to help with is a great opportunity! Especially if Em can track down the troublemakers. But with the unease and disquiet echoing around the empire, and whispers of a mysterious magic-man born anew, maybe the problem runs a bit deeper than what Emeri's equipped to deal with…

Seeing the exclusionist community devolve further into a mean middle school lunch table is just so hilarious to me, but at the same time I feel bad for young LGBT+ people being indoctrinated by this shit.
And when I say indoctrinated I mean it. Honestly the exclusionist community does so much to corrupt the absolute hell out of 13-16 year olds, it's terrifying to watch.
Like, aphobes LOVE saying how pedophilic the ace community is because we arent harassing ace kids to tell them that the label they chose for themselves that's not at all sexual in nature isnt for them. But this is the same group with 20-25 or in some cases fucking 40 year olds constantly equating their orientations to some sexual label, even going so far as to argue with 12 and 14 year old aces about how they're too young to say they're ace, how they shouldnt say they domt fuck because they shouldnt be having sex at that age anyways, how IDing as asexual means that they are saying everyone else their age is fucking somehow and more.
Then weve got these whole ass adults insisting that since ace is such a gross sexual label, a fancy asshole way to say hates sex- especially gay sex, they make allo to be some gross homophobic slur. Which is leading these baby gays to be all "i'm a filthy allo and proud!!!!" "This person who aces like? They are a big allo and fuck all the time!" Fucking 14 and 15 year olds are playing up the sex they're having to flex on inclusionists or aces (since they blur the line a bunch) and their adult discourse weirdos they look up to are reblogging and going "Yeah!! This kid gets it!!" And they dont acknowledge how creepy that shit is. And then they frame it in a way where if you're like "woah, you're a whole ass kid and im like 20 I dont want to hear about you doing anything" it's just you being ace and homophobic and trying to shame and censor gay sex or relationships (when no, it's me trying to not hear someone who hasnt taken PSATs flaunt their sexual exploits because that's uncomfortable).
And the thing is these discourse adults know full well what they're doing. They're the ones making and calling out fake blogs or scouring the internet for widely ignored asshole aces or inclusionists and using these as the proof of how demonic our community is. They're the ones that when they run out of a half decent troll or one off assholes will take completely decent posts to try to frame them as some dig at gay people even with the post has fuck all to do with gays.
They constantly cycle this to their younger followers who end up being so certain that the whole be nice and accepting thing they were first rocking with when they realized they werent cishet was a convoluted scheme thrown together by evil aces who want to be straight and yell at gays in safe spaces.
Honestly I could go on about how fucked up exclusionist logic poisons the whole community making for a fundementally toxic environment, but thsi is going to be ignored by the majority of exclusionists anyways so I'd rather save the time.
But yeah @ those 13-15 year old exclusionists who are super hateful toward aces and aros, I'm not trying to condescend yall but im Begging you to take a step back and actually think about your discourse interactions and ideologies and why they are the way they are

Okay, I’m just gonna put this out here: some douchebag is sending anonymous hate mail to a few Writeblrs right now, telling them how their WIP sucks and they don’t have friends.
`
So Writeblrs, if you do get a message like this, PLEASE IGNORE IT. It’s untrue, mean, and completely asinine. Your WIP is amazing. YOU are amazing. And you shouldn’t doubt it for a second.
`
I don’t know who’s sending these anonymous messages, but whoever you are, you can FUCK RIGHT OFF. Stop messing with my fellow writers. They’re amazing and don’t deserve your rude comments.

As you’re a biologist I wanted to ask you something, have the possible number oh human sexes been discovered or is it such a spectrum that the number can’t be distinguished? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I just really want to be more educated on this matter. Thank you!
The answer is going to partially depend on how you want to define biological sex, as there are several different ways and they don’t all lead to the same number of categories.
The simplest is probably karyotype, or what chromosomes you have. The traditional teaching is that XX is female and XY is male, but the reality is there are at least six viable karyotype sexes for humans: X, XX, XXY, XY, XYY, and XXXY. So right there you have a least six biological sexes.
But when you add genitals, sex organs, secondary sex characteristics, and hormone levels to the mix it gets really super complicated. Maybe if you sorted through all those factors and all their possible combinations you could get a number, but I don’t know what it is and I think it’s far more useful to imagine biological sex as something at least approaching a spectrum.
It can be useful in certain scientific contexts to lump people into different biological sex categories but depending on the context and what’s being studied there will often be more than two categories and they may not fall along the traditional male/female dichotomy.
But in terms of regular society, acting as though this male/female dichotomy is somehow sacred or inherently natural (especially when it comes wrapped up tons of societal and gender assumptions too) is pretty ridiculous.

Hey! I was wondering I you knew any tips for naming characters, especially in specific genres? I know naming characters is kinda an easy thing but I always struggle in finding the right name. Also, if it’s not any trouble, maybe a list of unusual/uncommon names (first and last)?
finding character names
if you’re looking for a name for a character of a certain ethnicity, you can always look up “common [insert country/ethnicity] boy/girl names” and you’ll get some good ideas. baby naming sites are great too. these kinds of websites also usually give meanings behind the names, and pronunciations.
a few lists:
101 female names
