Can I Burn Fat and Build Muscle at the Same Time? How do you Gain Muscle and Lose Fat simultaneously

There are a lot of differing opinions out there, and right off the bat I want to make it clear that all these opinions are based on individual experiences. Based on my experience the answer is a little more complicated than a simple yes or no. When I first started working out I lost a bunch of body fat just from doing weight training and cardio workouts on a consistent basis for a year and a half. I also simultaneously built some muscle mass. So does that mean that I discovered a ground breaking method to build muscle and burn fat at the same time? Could it be that I found the secret that everyone looking to get more lean muscle is looking for? No Way! And let me explain why. When I started working, when you, or anyone for that matter starts working out there's a little something known as beginner gains. When you first start lifting weights and you've never done it before, you're body is very quick to put on muscle mass. Even if you are doing everything wrong: your nutrition may be off, and your form during exercises is awful, regardless you can still get away with a descent amount of gains as a beginner. Unfortunately once you get past those beginning stages and adapt to lifting heavy weights. You will plateau and get stuck. The only way through this plateau requires, you start focusing in on the specifics of your nutrition and exercise program. My first step for bulking up further was eating more of anything. But after eating this way, I put on some excess body fat, which pushed me to do my first major cutting phase. This was where I started to see a ton of results. By doing a carb cycling diet, while still working out 6 days a week, I burned away a bunch of body fat. Immediately after finishing my cutting phase I did a bulking phase. This bulking phase was extremely effective because I went from being very depleted on calories to having a huge influx of calories. By doing this my body was like a sponge I got stronger, bigger muscles, and also got fatter even though my diet was very clean. So after that I went back to cutting. I continued doing the same thing over and over again because I realized that the ideal time to do a cutting phase is directly after a bulking phase and the best time to do a bulking phase is directly after my cutting phase. I built muscle and burned fat by going back and forth between the phases, but even when I was doing a clean bulk, I still never lost a substantial amount of fat while bulking. When you're trying to build muscle your body demands for you to have a calorie surplus. Unless you are in the very beginning stages and getting your beginner gains your body is going to demand and influx of calories to make your bicep or chest grow even one more inch. How are you ever going to build one more inch on any of your muscles while losing body fat. When trying to lose body fat you are required to make your body draw from fat stores by not giving it enough calories from your diet. If a surplus of calories is required to build muscle, and a calorie deficit is required to burn fat how can you ever do both at the same time? Over the course of years of bulking and cutting yes I did reduce my body fat and gained muscle. However that didn't happen all at once. It took a lot time of switching back and forth between cutting and bulking. The problem that I see many people having with transforming their body is a lack of patience. This causes newbies to abuse their bodies with crazy amounts of supplements, and even sometimes steroids to get the results that they want now. That saying patience is a virtue, 100% applies to building muscle and burning fat. You have to have patience and tackle each of these goals individually. The bottom line is, unless your brand new to exercise your going to have a lot of trouble doing both at the same time. Bulking in the advanced stages will take all of your effort, and all of your attention. The same goes with cutting. If you're eating a high calorie diet trying to gain muscle, it won't be mathematically conducive to burning fat and if it is then you energy expenditure won't be conducive to building muscle. source Read the full article

Some people say that your body fat has to be below 12 percent others say that it has to be below 10 percent but the truth is that the exact number varies from Individual to individual because different people will hold more or less body fat around different parts of their body. Regardless, since we can't spot reduce one of the major goals has to be to reduce overall body fat. To do this you'll have to follow a diet plan that puts you into a caloric deficit that you can actually stick to everyday. When I say create a caloric deficit with your diet, most people immediately want to know which diet plan is best to burn the most body fat in the shortest amount of time. And this is a very fair question, but it's not the right question to ask. It's a fair question because there are so many different diet approaches to choose from. There's low carb dieting, low fat dieting, fasting, paleo, vegetarian, atkins, keto, the dash diet, the mediteranean diet, the blood type diet and the list can go on and on. There's definitely a lot to choose from, but it's not the right question to ask because to get six pack abs you have to be able to diet consistently over TIME. That's right it's gonna take time to see your abs, so the number one question you should ask is which diet will I be able to stick to everyday. And it turns out there was a study done on over 600 people that observed the changes in weight lost over the course of a year. The 600 people were divided between 2 groups low carb and low fat, almost everything else remained identical. At the end of the study researchers found that some people in each group lost a lot of weight, others lost a little bit of weight, and some even gained weight. But the amazing thing was that both charts matched almost identically, and the reason why was one thing...adherence. Some people in the low carb group were able to easily give up carbs for a year and others cheated for the majority of the year because they couldn't stick to only eating mostly high protein and high fat foods. The same thing happened in the low fat group. The point is as long as you can find a diet plan that you can stick to you'll be very successful with reducing your body fat, so it's not about finding the best one, its about finding the one that works for you. The best way to do this is to find a way of eating that doesn't feel like dieting at all. So everyday you'll want to start by picking your favorite whole real single ingredient foods. Single ingredient foods will naturally fill you up and make it easy to create a caloric deficit, but its very important to pick foods that you actually enjoy eating if you want to be able to stick to eating them consistently. Next you'll want to decide how often to eat. Again the right way is the way you can actually stick to. Do you do better with small consistent meals throughout the day or will you be able to adhere to a fasting protocol better where you eat only one two or three times a day? By eating only single ingredient foods daily and choosing what times of the days to eat them based on your personal preferences you'll slowly change your relationship to food which is the major key to successfully be able to stick to a long term diet. The next thing you'll want to do daily is weight training. And I don't mean that I want you to work your abs with weights everyday. You were probably not expecting that one, but it's true if you want to transform your body and actually maintain your results you can't stay restricted with your diet plan 4 too long. When you tell yourself that you cant eat something for a couple weeks it's totally different than telling yourself you can never eat that something ever again. If you really love pizza and you decide you're never eating it again in fact you're never even going to think about it again, youve just locked yourself into a psycological wrestling match. One that you're probably gonna lose because suppressing a thought only makes you think about that thought more. A much better strategy to deal with your cravings when your on a long-term plan is by not having any restrictions but instead understanding your body better. What I mean is that we have two different types of hunger. The physical feeling of hunger and your minds interpertation of that feeling of hunger. The physical feelings are things like your stomach growling and feeling empty maybe even your mouth watering or feeling low on energy, but most people never even experience the physical feeling of hunger because before they even can their mind hunger has already taken over. All the sudden your mind space becomes full of all these wonderful suggestions of things that will end your hunger and usually none of them are healthy. And like I just said suppressing thoughts will only make you think of those thoughts more so the best way to handle this is to allow yourself to eat whatever your mind is telling you that you really want however the catch is that before you allow yourself to have that pizza, cookie, or ice cream before you eat whatever it is that your mind is telling you you want you have to first handle the physical feeling of hunger by having a high protein, high veggetable, healthy carb meal. Now the reason why I want you to do this is because your minds hunger isn't real its an illusion, it's just a reaction to your body's physical feeling of hunger & as soon as you satisfy that physical feeling of hunger 90 percent of the time you won't even want to eat whatever it is that you were obsessing over & if you still do help yourself because you're not going to eat very much of it before you're full. You'll be mind blown at how amazing this strategy is. Try it I can go on & on about how great this is but there's still eight other habits that we have to go over so let's move on to the next one which is to start exercising with heavy weights. Lifting heavier weights releases more muscle-growth & fat-burning hormones than lifting light weights. As long as your moving at a moderate pace you'll be able to burn way more calories & get way more done within a shorter period of time. Also for naturals lifting heavier weights helps encourage more protein synthesis, which isn't as much of a concern for steroid users, but for naturals this leads to greater muscle gains. My favorite rep range is six to eight reps so when I say heavy I'm not talking about power lifting, but you want to pick a weight that you can't do more than 8 reps. If you can do that weight for more then 8 reps then its time to move up to a heavier weight. The heavier the weight the more calories you'll burn with each rep, & by using heavier weight you'll activate more fast twitch muscle fibers & release lots of fat burning hormones allowing you to continue burning fat hours after your workout during the recovery process. You'll also build more bone density & lifting heavy weights consistently will help increase your metabolism. Point is lift heavy weights, most of you that are debating between going heavy or light simply don't want to push yourself & pushing yourself is required to consistently continue getting results. Next habit is to practice fasting regularly. I want you to get all that nonsense out of your head that you have to have breakfast & you have to eat x amount of meals a day because none of it is true. Your body works based off of totals so if you overeat one day & fast the next day your totals will probably balance out.
