jouno’s eyelashes - a quick analysis

yes im analyzing jouno’s eyelashes. im obsessed with him what can i say.

one thing i’ve noticed throughout my many rereads of jouno’s segments of the manga is that he is actually given eyelashes in a lot of the panels he is present in! often times they’re just thin white lines but they’re definitely there. here are some examples.

now, if we recall back to what harukawa said about eyes a long time ago:

the darker ones eyes are, the more tainted or corrupted a person is. someone who is doing good and/or feeling good may have whiter eyes. to rephrase, one who’s eyes are dark are typically doing something corrupt and/or are in an emotionally bad state. we see this numerous times throughout the manga with many characters, the shade of their eyes changes with their emotion at the time usually.

now what does this have to do with jouno? well, i believe his eyelashes are used to display his intentions since he keeps his eyes closed constantly.

now, there are definitely some exceptions to this. panels where his eyelashes are small could be hard to colour this way, so im looking past a few instances for that purpose.

anyways, i believe looking at his eyelashes in this perspective also hints towards his betrayal of fukuchi, since you can see he has good intent. more on this later.

i'd also like to preface this by reminding you that jouno believed he was in the right with most things he did. he was sure the agency was in the wrong for a long time, times where his lashes were white while dealing with the agency was likely because he believed himself to be doing what is good.

now, starting with his debut in chapter 57, his eyelids are almost completely black as he arrests dazai

his eyelashes appear a bit darker as he torments people i find.

such as shortly after he slices kunikida's notebook and asks tetchou to kill yosano.

one scene i actually want to put a lot of emphasis on here is chapter 78's interaction between jouno and kunikida.

here is his face when he first walks in, he's simply making small talk over how a terrorist attack is awful

we can see his lashes pretty well.

we can also see it well when he's talking about his asian pear. maybe he just really likes them.

however, as the conversation progresses onto tormenting kunikida, his eyelids casually grow darker.

they're not completely black yet, but you can tell he is enjoying bothering kunikida despite his claim of innocence.

after this, you can see his lashes are a little brighter as he announces that yosano is going to be executed.

this makes sense remembering that he is under the belief that yosano is guilty of terrorism and is getting the punishment he believes she deserves.

after this, jouno walks away as kunikida cries out in anger.

his eyelashes are almost completely black here, likely because he is getting nothing but personal enjoyment out of kunikida's grief. he isn't doing good by this and this could definitely be seen as corrupt behaviour.

a huge contrast to what i've been saying falls in chapters 71 and 72, the cafe scenes.

you can see the white of his eyelashes in nearly every panel he's in.

what makes this different than when he was bothering kunikida is that bothering the cafe owner was moving his case forward. he believed he was pursuing justice and doing what is right by extracting important information here; as opposed to doing nothing but mentally torturing someone who isn't improving his case. from his perspective, his actions weren't tainted in anyway except possibly approach, but since he was doing what was right his eyelids were painted white.

another example of this is in chapters 60 and 61, when he is fighting the agency for the first time.

and when the agency escapes and he's surprised to find out the pursued terrorist group would have allies in chapter 62.

i found that these three chapters had a lot of small panels where you couldn't really see the detail of his eyes, but generally they were white as he caught the criminals. they were also white as they escaped, since he was likely confused that people were easily supporting the group he perceived as evil.

my last example of this is his eyes being very white as he tortures the bank robbers in the flashback scenes in chapter 92.5.

he believes that he is seeking justice here. the robber gets what they deserve, and his intentions are what he believes in just which explains his eyes being white.

anyways, to summarize this all: jouno's eyelashes colour often displays his morality. his lashes seem to be coloured more white when he is doing what is morally right from his perspective. even if what he is doing is considered brutal by most, his eyes glow white if it is in pursing of justice or good. in contrast, if what he is doing has no overall benefit and he is just distressing someone for purely his own enjoyment, his eyelids often are coloured much darker.

however, as i said above i believe this subtly hinted at jouno's betrayal of fukuchi.

in chapter 92, we can still see by his eyelashes that he has the right intentions when hunting for the agency.

and towards the end of the chapter we see his eyes still have a small white streak, implying his bluff on actually being willing to switch to the other side. at the same time, the thinness of the lash could be so small because he is lying to his superior as well, which i suppose could also be seen as tainted behaviour.

however, after fukuchi's plan is unraveled we see the brightness shine again.

as i stated above, when he isn't doing what he believes is right or is tormenting people for no reason but his own enjoyment, his eyes look black. but if you look at the image below you can see his eyes are partially coloured white, hinting that he was going to do what was right. it is subtle colouring, i assume that is partially due to the fact that his face was rather small on the page. but regardless it is still noticeable.

and what do we know? he did switch up and betray fukuchi shortly after saying this.

with that in mind, there's one scene i deliberately avoided bringing up until now; the scene i believe heavily tries to avoid hinting at jouno's betrayal of fukuchi. im referring to the scene where jouno confronts aya.

as i said, if jouno is acting corrupt towards someone for his own fun, his eyelids are dark, but if he's doing something that he believes is just his lashes remain partially white. i believe that out of context his eyes would likely be black as he torments aya, however since he secretly had good intention they would have actually been white.

however, the readers had yet to know the context of his approach until the end of chapter 93, so they needed to hide the fact that he may have had good intent here.

so harukawa kept his eyes covered (or coloured his face differently) throughout the scene.

the most we see of his face in this whole scene is his side profile, which is small enough to not need to colour his eyelashes in.

i believe this was an intentional choice to keep the readers from guessing that he was doing something he believes is right here.

anyways, to sum up this segment i believe that jouno's eyelashes in chapter 92-92.5 subtly hinted at the fact that he was indeed siding with aya and was preparing to betray fukuchi.

in conclusion, i believe jouno's eyelashes hint at his true intent a lot. they show that he is a good person hiding behind a facade. the shading of his eyelids is a lot more subtle than how most character's eyes look in the manga, which i believe helps add more to jouno's somewhat moral ambiguity. he is an incredibly well-written character and i can't wait to see more of him!

The Way I Loved You ~ A Soukou fanfic

It was twilight, and Chuuya was sat on the roof of the mafia building, overlooking the city, smoking a cigarette, and completely lost in thought.

“You should smoke so much you know. You’ll damage your lungs – like my brother.”

Chuuya almost leapt out of his skin. “Jesus, Gin, I didn’t hear you coming.”

She only shrugged before adding, “I am an assassin. And quiet is kind of my thing.”

She sat down beside him, and swing her legs over the edge of the building. They sat in peaceful silence for a few moments, before Chuuya finally asked, “Why are you up here anyways?”

Gin gave him a look. “You’ve been up here, alone, for almost an hour.”

“So?”

“You miss him.”

Chuuya felt his face flush bright red. “What!? No, I- I mean… who are you- I don’t even know what you mean.” he declared.

“It’s alright,” said Gin, “I miss him too.”

“You- you do?” Chuuya couldn’t hide his surprise.

“Yes. Despite being excessively cruel to my brother sometimes, Dazai-san has taught him much. He was also the first person to ever give us a home. So yes, I miss him.”

“I suppose so. Why would I miss him though!?” asked Chuuya. His attempt to bluff his way out of the situation failed, as Gin gave him another look that quite clearly said ‘Don’t give me that crap.’

Chuuya sighed resignedly. “Okay. Fine. We were secretly…friends.”

“…”

“OKAY. More than friends. We- I- … Much as I hated him, - and I did hate him, - I… I think I loved him. And now… now that I’ve realised and accepted that… I miss him. So much.”

Gin looked at him silently, her soft eyes clearly indicating she understood and was listening.

“What was it like, to love him?” she asked softly.

“Wow.” Chuuya leaned back on his hands and gazed up at the stars.

“That’s a big question.

“Well, we would constantly be screaming at each other, especially in public obviously, and fighting to prove our strength.

“But then he would randomly come and drag me out of my apartment and we would kiss in the rain…” Chuuya sighed and smiled at the memory.

“And I was constantly up at like 2am, thinking of him. I would curse his name because I just couldn’t get him out of my head!! I was… I was that madly in love it made me act insane!” Chuuya punched his palm aggressively and covered his face with his hands. He peeped through his fingers and Gin, who was still listening in her quietly comprehensive way, before continuing.

“I had so many mental breakdowns, like panic attacks, and times when I would just… I had to cry in a corner.” He stopped again and glared at Gin suddenly. “You won’t tell anyone about this. Will you.” he said gruffly.

Gins eyes, filled with kindness, stared back. “Not if you don’t want me to.” she promised.

Chuuya relaxed slightly. “Good. Yeah. Well, when… that happened, it was always okay, because he was there to comfort me, and tell me ‘its okay, I’m here’. And I would always be there for him. And now…” Chuuya broke off, his voice filled with emotion. He composed himself quickly and resumed, in still a slightly shaky voice.

“Also… he was the one who encourage me to come out to you guys… do you remember?”

Gin nodded, “I do. That was so brave of you.”

Chuuya sighed sadly, “well, Dazai was the reason I has the courage to do it.

“It… I mean… the whole experience gave me a rush, like I was on a rollercoaster, ya know? It made me giddy with love and happiness, but now, its over, so suddenly. And all I feel is kind of… sick.

“But mostly… I just never knew I could feel that much. Like… I’m… I don’t… I’m hardly human. Yet all these emotions that I couldn’t explain, let alone understand just filled me, and… it was all because of him.

“So yeah. That’s the way I loved him. And God, did I love him. I see that now.”

Chuuya sniffed, and breathed deeply.

“It’s alright,” said Gin.

“I know! I’m fine!” insisted Chuuya.

“Yes. But… that’s a lot. I think you should tell him how you feel. Then maybe… he will come back. For all of us.”

Chuuya looked at her sceptically. “I could never say all that to him.”

“Well maybe, you don’t have to.”

The confusion was evident on Chuuya’s face, so Gin continued,

“You’re a musician, right?”

“How on earth do you-“ Chuuya interjected.

“Never mind how I know. But you could write him a song. Saying everything you’ve just told me.” she suggested softly.

Chuuya stared vacantly at the city.

“I… well, … maybe I could.”

But I miss screaming and fighting and kissing in the rain,

And it's 2 a.m. and I'm cursing your name,

So in love that I acted insane

And that's the way I loved you.

Breaking down and coming on out,

It's a roller coaster kind of rush,

And I never knew I could feel that much,

HELLO MY FRIENDS I have returned from the abyss. This fic took /ages/ as I just kept procrastinating it but it is now finally here.

Obviously I based it on the lyrics to the Taylor Swift song "The Way I Loved You". I just thought the lyrics fit Soukou so damn well. I like taking inspiration from random stuff like this :) I have more lyrics fanfics in the works so lemme know if you'd want to see that and if there's any songs or ships you'd particularly like to see :)!

headcanon atsushi’s ability the tiger does not know what to do when it likes someone

like in general atsushi is bad with knowing what to do with the ppl he likes and showing affection – like he tries to mimic others but he himself is still working on something that feels natural if that makes sense

but the tiger

the tiger is far worse becuz the only positive thing it can associate with positive emotions is food so every time it gets closer to the full moon the tiger starts whispering in the back of his mind that he should eat dazai and kunikida

then kyouka and junichiro

and ranpo and yosano and fukuzawa and kenji and naomi and haruno

at first atsushi panics (naturally) worries he’s a cannibal, thinks the tiger hates the agency, panics more, especially after dead apple when he and the tiger gained an understanding of each other and he realized that the tiger was protecting him so he’s like why r u trying to kill the agency members

but gradually he realizes that actually the tiger just doesn’t know how to deal with positive emotions and yeah

dazai needs glasses. he doesn't get them for himself because he thinks he can put it off. kunikida ends up getting him those circle glasses and he's like "noooo i don't want these i'll look like a nerd" but kunikida makes him keep them anyway bc he uses his lack of Vision as an excuse to not do his work. he thinks hes gonna get teased for looking stupid but everyone thinks he looks absolutely GORGEOUS and he gets like 10x more compliments on the street

dazai has morse code memorized and likes to fuck with kunikida in the ada dorms by tapping a message on his wall. kunikida has Overstressed trying to translate

yosano accidentally will infodump on neat medfacts and someone always has to tell her she's rambling (and usually its ranpo)

kyouka's favorite animals are bunnies, chinchillas and kittens, but she's allergic to cats (imagine how awful it is living with atsushi /j)

it is very funny to me to imagine akutagawa gets easily scared

hirotsu is the aroace ally who gets to deal with everyone coming to him to rant about / talk shit about / talk about their crushes on others

Q speaks fluent german and they love jumpscaring the pm members with it

louisa loves to dress up her room whenever she uses her ability. she doesn't really need to, she just likes to. maybe she'll have some coffee, and a really comfortable chair, and some lilac or pumpkin spice candles depending on her Vibe TM, and its just so aesthetic

nikolai can replicate signatures, and by extension handwriting, almost perfectly. he uses this to his advantage to forge notes. he also uses this to help sigma when he's Super Fucking Tired

sigma's favorite cookies are double chocolate chip

dazai trying the pocky game vs chuuya who just takes the pocky, kisses dazai, and then eats the pocky

poe visits ranpo while hes in the agency and he'll bring a new snack for ranpo every single time, it's always something he's heard ranpo offhandedly say he wants to try

nikolai is a WONDERFUL cook. if he notices sigma hasn't eaten in a little while / hasnt left his office in a bit, he'll surprise him and show up with a plate of homecooked ukrainian food, or homemade cookies (double chocolate chip), and sigma is soooo grateful. i also think nikolai knows what sigma likes in terms of coffee so he makes him coffees a lot because sigma is so sleepy and gets caffeine headaches

tecchou refuses to eat food thats not the same color, but he's actually a really good cook and jouno is genuinely surprised when tecchou makes him an actually delicious breakfast/dinner/whatever, and hes like "so does this mean you're done with your weird food combinations?" and tecchou is like "no, but i know you don't like them so i'm not going to force you to eat them." and jouno is like. wait. hold on. why are you nice

Something that was crucial to me being able to foster healthy relationships (platonic and romantic) was learning those around me aren’t mind readers.

Communicating honestly and effectively can allow people to be there for you. It can also allow you to work out conflicts in order to maintain long term relationships.

It might seem “wrong” to ask for your needs to be met. But it isn’t. In fact, usually our loved ones prefer us to be up front with our needs rather than hinting at them. (Hinting is exhausting for both parties and easily missed.)

Communicate your boundaries. “When you tease me about —-, it really upsets me. Please don’t do that anymore.”

Communicate what is working for you. “When you reach out to check in when I’m having a hard time, it really helps and makes me feel supported.”

Communicate what you need. “Things are really hard right now. I could use the company of a friend. Can I call you?”

A lack of communication can lead to relationships breaking. Resentment builds. Misunderstandings happen. Feelings get hurt.

If you don’t tell your loved ones what you need, then it’s unfair to us and them to be upset at them for not reading your mind.

You are allowed to have needs and wants. And you are allowed to express them.

PART 2 IS HERE!!!

“Teruko-chan??” asked Tetchou, “Can I talk to you?”

It was two weeks since the undercover mission, when realisation had hit Tetchou like a truck. And despite his best efforts, his crush on Jouno showed no signs of slowing or going away. His every waking moment was filled with thoughts of Jouno, the image of his face appearing as soon as he closed his eyes. So he had to do something about it.

“Yeah, sure! What about? Are you finally giving up on that mission??” replied Teruko.

“No… NO I will complete it! It might just take some time! No… I wanted to talk to you about… boys” Tetchou finished in a whisper.

Teruko stared at him for a few seconds before throwing back her head and laughing until she nearly cried. “Ha ha!! You’ve got to be joking!! Tetchou – asking for advice about boys! No, this is too funny!” she giggled.

“Uh… no. I’m serious!” muttered Tetchou urgently.

At his words, Teruko quickly stopped laughing, and her face grew sincere with realisation. “Oh… oh. Okay… what is it? Or should I say… who is it?” she asked.

“Well, its just that I…” Tetchou started, but she interrupted.

“ITS JOUNO!! Isn’t it!!” then, seeing his face, “OHHH it is!! I knew it!!”

“No, no!! Shut it!!” shushed Tetchou, embarrassed.

Teruko gave him a look. “So it is Jouno.”

“Yes, fine. It is Jouno.” sighed Tetchou.

“Right. Now… tell me everything.”

“Everything, like the entire history of the universe??”

“NO YOU DUMBASS TELL ME ABOUT JOUNO!!”

Two days later, Teruko and Tetchou were left alone together at the end of a meeting to collect up the papers scattered across the table.

“Tetchou-san, remember that talk we had, about a certain you-know-who?” asked Teruko.

“Yes, of course I do.” He sighed, “Nothing could ever come of it though.”

“Right. Uh, well you are aware that he likes you back?” said Teruko.

“Heh. Yeah, right,” said Tetchou. “Don’t tease me, Teruko-chan.”

Teruko looked absolutely astonished. “Bro!! It’s absolutely, glaringly obvious!!” she cried. “Anyone with half a braincell can see it!!”

Tetchou stopped in the middle of gathering a pile of documents. “Wait... you’re serious?? You actually think he likes me back??” he asked.

“Of course I do, you moron. You’ve got to be joking, you actually thought he didn’t like you!?”

“Well, yeah…” he admitted.

“That’s it. Come with me. I am not having you both looking absolutely lovesick in the meeting room any longer.” Teruko declared, and with that, she marched out of the room, dragging Tetchou along behind her.

“JOUNO-SAN!!” she yelled, as she burst into Jouno’s office. Jouno turned his head towards the door, and before he had time to react any further, Teruko grabbed his hand, pulled him up from where he was sat behind his desk, and pushed his hand into Tetchou’s.

“Tetchou-san is here, and I would just like to say. You both so OBVIOUSLY like each other, will you PLEASE just get the pining over with and DATE ALREADY!!”

Her words were met with utter silence, as Tetchou looked at Jouno with a terrified face, like that of a deer in headlights, and Jouno just appeared mildly confused, as a small, hopeful smile crept across his face.

“I’m WAITING!” cried Teruko.

Tetchou took a deep shaking breath. But looking at the tiny bit of hope and excitement on Jouno’s face was all he needed.

“Um…” he began.

Jouno heard how fast Tetchou’s heart was racing, and squeezed his hand, ever so slightly, silently and subtly begging him to continue.

“If you wanted, Jouno-kun, uh, maybe, we could, I don’t know, go out for a drink?? If you wanted?” he stuttered.

And Jouno replied, ever so calmly, “I would love that, Tetchou.”

But Tetchou finally knew, from the slight shake of his hands and his shaking breath, that Jouno had been waiting for that question for a very long time.

I am sorry it's taken so long to post part 2!! Things have been hectic, not least because I am a student, and I had to go to a funeral last week (omd this is sounding like those unhinged ao3 authors notes)

@xansnacks I'm so glad you love my writing style! <3 I am very glad I managed to capture Jouno's blindness well, as it means a lot to me as I am part of the visually impaired community so :)) Also undercover missions is just a YES.

@mixxdpunch the sillies are now going on a date AAAA!! Also I got the idea of Jouno being able to smell ants from your post about Suegiko arguing in public about ants!! I loved it so much I just had to include it.

AGAIN any feedback positive or negative is HUGELY appreciated. If you like my stuff I will definitely go look at what you've posted :)

I think I'll post some other fanfics on here soon - I've got some ideas for Ranpoe and Soukoku(!?)
