Bruised, Battered, Beloved (Patchwork Family Series pt. 5)

And as the laughter faded, softer things grew in its place: sighs of relief, weary smiles, shoulders bumping together with casual intimacy, arms draped lazily over friends without thought. Touches that spoke not of necessity, but of trust so deep it was stitched into the bone.

The battle was over.

The bruises lingered across their skin like smudges of charcoal on old parchment, and the cuts marked them like threads yet to be mended. Tomorrow they would begin to yellow under a thick salve- more abstract paint than charcoal.

But aboard the Sunny, the air was thick with something else, something warmer than sorrow. Relief. Belonging. The unshakable knowledge that they had survived together.

The world outside the Sunny could rage and roar as much as it wanted in reaction to whatever coup they started. Inside her glowing hull, they were safe.

"Sit still, idiot," Nami muttered, kneeling beside Luffy where he slouched bonelessly against the mast.

Usopp, sprawled dramatically against Jinbei’s broadside, groaned, "We look like a total shipwreck of a crew!" His voice was half a whine, half a laugh.

"Don’t we always?" Sanji said dryly, limping as he passed.

Ink and Sunlight (Patchwork Family Series pt. 4)

Inspired by The Trouble With Eastern by Teaandtumblr (@danosphere91 on tumblr, I believe) Teaandtumblr has infected me with brain rot and had me thinking about the crew speaking, or knowing/not knowing, different languages. I then proceeded to make it fit my Found family, Luffy and Robin agenda, and here we are.

Where everyone speaks different languages.

“You found the only cool spot on the ship.”

“I followed the smell of old paper and Robin,” he mumbled, voice half-melted, rolling onto his side and giving her a lopsided, sleepy grin.

She laughed under her breath, closing her book with a soft thud and setting it in her lap. “That’s either very flattering or very concerning.”

“Both,” he agreed, without missing a beat, his head rested on her thigh.

Robin resumed stroking his hair, her fingers moving quietly through his damp, sun-warmed strands.

“Whatcha reading?” he asked eventually, voice muffled and lazy.

“A short history of sea maps in the North Blue,” she said, lifting the book slightly. “In Common.”

He squinted up at her and scrunched up his nose. “That’s the language you write your notes in, right?”

“Yes,” she nodded- common was a unifying language across the seas in a world where every island seemed to have its language, dialect, or accent at least. “It’s used across many islands. A shared tongue—something like a bridge between people.”

“Huh,” he mused. “I never really learned it.”

Robin blinked. “You’ve never learned Common?”

The ship was still but no longer felt empty. It hummed, not with fear, but with memory. The Thousand Sunny held its breath between heartbeats as if the sea had paused to remember who once laughed the loudest across its waves.

“I don’t need a god,” Luffy said. “I need my crew.”

Nika exhaled. Not quite a sigh. “You’re reckless. You’d rather break than bow.”

“That’s freedom.”

“No,” Nika said. “That’s youth.”

Luffy gave a lazy grin. “Same thing.”

Nika looked at him—looked. There was something in Luffy that didn’t flicker. Didn’t doubt.

“You’re not afraid,” Nika said.

“I am. Sometimes. But not of you.”

That landed. Nika’s eyes narrowed slightly. Not with anger—just thought.

“I’ve carried people,” Nika said. “Whole generations. I broke chains, lit fires, ran ‘til my name was nothing but a whisper. And now…”

“You’re still here,” Luffy said. “For a reason.”

“Maybe,” Nika allowed. “But I’m not sure I like what comes next.”

Luffy shrugged. “Doesn’t matter. It’s coming anyway.”

"Remember when we first met?" Luffy asked suddenly, abruptly changing the subject, watching the lights below.

Zoro snorted. "Kind of hard to forget being tied to a post for weeks."

"You were so grumpy."

"I was starving."

"Still grumpy," Luffy grinned, dodging the half-hearted swipe Zoro aimed at his head. "But you smiled when I told you about my dream."

"Did not."

"Did too! A tiny one. Like this—" Luffy attempted to imitate what must have been Zoro's expression, screwing up his face into an exaggerated scowl that barely contained a smile.

Zoro shoved him, and Luffy fell back laughing, his hat rolling away. "You're making that up."

"Nope! I remember 'cause I thought, 'This guy gets it.' You didn't laugh at me wanting to be Pirate King. You just... understood."

Zoro was quiet for a moment, watching the stars. "Yeah, well. Hard to laugh at someone else's dream when yours is just as crazy."

Featuring soft Zoro, Luffy's infectious happiness, and squeaky fish sandals that Nami is going to be pissed they spent money on.

A Liar, A Sniper, A Brother

Usopp has had many names.

In Syrup Village, he was the town crier of falsehoods, a storyteller whose whole purpose was to tell lies bigger than the truth: Captain Usopp.

On the Going Merry, he was a sniper, a craftsman, and a friend.

Once, he was called Sogeking.

He was Usopp, the coward

On the Thousand Sunny, or wherever Luffy was, he was a brother.

Usopp knew that Luffy would wake tomorrow, and miraculously, the world would keep turning, and the sea would call them forward again. But for now, they rested. And Usopp, the liar, the sniper, the fixer of broken things– Usopp, the brother– kept watch.

Zoro smirked, rolling his eyes. “Sure. That’s why we nearly starved before we even made it to the Grand Line.”

Luffy’s laugh rolls over the deck like a summer breeze, infectious and unshaken, the sound of a boy who never stopped believing. And Zoro’s grin widened, shaking his head because Luffy’s contagious laughter made the ocean feel small and manageable.

Feeling like getting a rise out of his captain, he slowly leaned more and more weight on Luffy till the younger boy was folded in half and was breathless. In retaliation, Luffy jabbed his perpetually bony elbows into his ribs with the force of a thousand suns.

There was a time when they were strangers, bound only by circumstance, but now, they are each other’s home.

Luffy continued to laugh, the sound light as the breeze. “But we didn’t!” He turned his gaze to the sky, eyes wide, as if seeing those first days play out in the constellations. “Back then, it felt like the world was just waiting for us. Like no matter what happened, we’d get to the next island and keep going.”

Nami leaned forward, her elbows resting on her knees, a sign of intimacy and engagement.

Hey I put together a beginner art resource list! Feel free to share, save, etc. but a lot of people don’t know where to start:

Man is this a holy grail it includes free programs, online courses, tutorials, and scholarships (us based):

A big thing you are taught early on is just hand/eye coordination. Speed drawing, or “gesture drawing” if you’re fancy, is the best practice you can do on a regular basis.As much as you hate hearing “just practice”- it matters.

The best online art course I can think of. It will literally go step by step in teaching you commands and digital painting:

The Loomis method for the construction of the head is very popular because it is easy to learn and remember and can be applied to any drawing of the head.

Loomis also has many published books under his name. I’m not saying you can get free books here but if you could well. Careful of fake links with this site, if you don’t see the single login.re it’s the wrong one.

If loomis method books aren’t your style and you are more of a video person try this (this is the first on a short series):

If you know me I’m barely cracking the surface with digital art but I’m actually trained in professional forensic art and hyper realistic portraits , so here is info on traditional art by media.

Little proof of some training, but if you like this, this is woodless graphite pencils on vellum- just a slightly better quality than a pencil and paper :)

Finally here are some amazing pose references. Adorkastock had moved from Pinterest and is working on their own website so check them out here:

Taco is single handed my my go to for simplified anatomy and it goes my section of the body (people have made Pinterest copies that is separated by parts of the body) but I highly recommend buying it if you’re able!
