I caught a vision of PAPER MESSENGER AT DAYBREAK early one morning as I was coming around a hairpin turn, and heading down into the Atascadero valley. The scene was magical, majestic, heroic, and theatrical. I think it's in the nature of my work to play The edge between theater, and realism. All painting is theater. Sometimes little more than a form of fantastic escapism. Sometimes all the special effects are trying to act as a reduction of a truth that is otherwise too general and mundane to appreciate. Hello All! I have four works in THE OTHERWORLD Exhibition, a group exhibition of visionary artists exploring alternate realities. THE OTHERWORLD opened to the public last Friday and will be up till the first week of February. Opening reception (yes, in-person!) is December 2nd in Thousand Oaks, CA. CONVERSATION: DROUGHT

For me, to not garden is not an option. I garden for my sanity. I garden for my table. I garden for beauty. So in a drought year, how do I make the best use of a thimble-full of water? STRAW. With seeds tucked in under the soil, drip lines run across the topsoil, and straw covering everything, I was able to sprout my whole garden with very little water. Then, once there were little sprouts, I moved the straw back from them but made sure any empty soil was completely covered with straw. And bonus--NO WEEDING!!!Drought in life, both literal and metaphorical, can drive us to creative solutions. HANGING PAPER MAN AT DAWN is the piece that lives in my studio. I have tried putting him in storage a couple of times when I am making space for new work on the studio wall. But the image haunts my psyche, and he is out again, mentoring every new work. Conceptually and aesthetically he embodies the central melody of my creative endeavor here on this footprint of land. A psychic contraposto of rest and effort, frustration and determination, vulnerability and strength. A thing imagined striving to touch a thing solid and real. Jacob is wrestling with the divine on a much larger scale.
