During the Second World War it was almost impossible for Jewish service members to maintain a kosher diet due to rations and other sources of food heavily relying on non-kosher ingredients (like pork).

Because of this, The Howling Commandoes made it their mission to ensure Bucky never had to break kashrut.

Either through trading rations

or stealing the more appetizing food from officers' tent, food most of the troops would never see

or looting long abandoned houses

or Steve putting his foot down and using the special treatment he was given as Captain America to demand more appropriate rations for their unit to ensure Bucky actually got the sustenance he needed.
