Caring for My Investment
Kaz Brekker x Inef Ghafa (Six of Crows)
Word Count: 775
Summary: Fluff; Inej gives Kaz a much needed break from his daily life as leader of the Dregs
Inej’s hair blew in the wind as she sat, perched on the windowsill. The sun had just begun its descent past the horizon. The orange and pink hues painting the sky. Below, she could see parts of Ketterdam closing for the day and parts opening for the night. She smiled to herself as she imagined slipping through the window and silently stalking the gloved man she planned to spend her night with. He told her to meet in his office at sundown, but Inej wasn’t the type to be kept waiting. She wanted to be on the move, for the chance to surprise him instead of the other way around. She had just placed her foot onto the tiled roof, slipping the tips of her toes into a well-worn foothold, when the knob rattled. Her smile widened. She sidled back inside and draped herself across Kaz’s worn chair. The door swung open and she saw a glimpse of those legendary black gloves, covering the hands only she got to see, only she got to hold, and only she got to feel. “Hello Wraith” Kaz said with a smirk. Inej’s eyes popped up from his hands and matched his smirk for one of her own. “Dirtyhands” she replied with a lilt in her voice. Her eyes were dragged back down as he pulled off his gloves finger by finger. He walked towards her, towards his desk. “I have to say, I quite like the look of you sitting there. Something about a woman in charge” Inej lifted her eyebrow at that statement “Oh, and why is that?” “It means I finally get a break” Kaz replied with a chuckle Inej’s heart broke just a little at that revelation. She couldn’t think of a time Kaz wasn’t planning, plotting, or enforcing. A time where Kaz could be Kaz, not the leader of the dregs. Maybe he does need a break she thought. Inej stood up and walked around to the other side of the desk. Kaz just stood stoically and watched. She came close enough to touch and they just stared, breathing each other in. She slowly reached her hands up to his shoulders and he physically relaxed on contact. Inej gently pushed him over to the couch in the corner of the room until the back of his legs hit the cushion. Inej sat down and stared up at him. “What are you doing?” he asked looking down. “Giving you your break.” said Inej, pulling him down to her. Kaz smiled, understanding her motives and put his arm around her. He might have tensed because of the skin-on-skin contact with another person, but not Inej, never Inej. She settled herself further into him.
After a minute, his hand drifted up and down her shoulder, seemingly unable to keep from touching her. Inej’s eyes closed as she drifted further into him, her head coming to lay on his lap. Kaz’s hands immediately found the tresses of Inej’s silken black hair. It was astonishing to feel the hands capable of ending someone’s life so soft and gentle in her wind-swept, tangled hair. It didn’t bother Kaz, he unraveled each and every one. “Do you want to talk about it? Inej asked Kaz, her voice going hoarse from the long period of disuse. “Talk about what” Kaz hummed. “Why you wear the gloves.”
Kaz’s hands stopped and a second later resumed. Inej sat up to look at Kaz, waiting for his reply. “I don’t think so” he replied matter-of-factly, shaking his head. “But Inej,” he lightly gripped her chin between his thumb and forefinger, “When I do, When I can talk about it, It’ll be with you and only you.” Kaz’s hand left her chin and cupped her cheek. His thumb brushing along the soft skin. They didn’t need words. They just needed each other. Inej laid back down and instead of returning his hand to her hair, Kaz’s fingers traced circles and shapes down her back. Inej fought the chill that threatened to course through her. This is what she wanted. She wanted him. Not Kaz “Dirtyhands” Brekker, leader of the dregs. Not to just be “The Wraith” to do his bidding. But Kaz and Inej. “What are we doing Kaz?” Inej asked, coming close to exasperation He looked down with a smile on his face “I think you know” “Yeah Yeah, protecting your investment, I’ve heard that before” “No, Inej, I’m caring for my investment.” The smile on Inej’s face lasted long after she fell asleep in the comfort and safety of Kaz’s arms.
