They become part of you too. You walk the same path, grow with them, and when you arrive at your destination, you've changed, even just a little, so that you aren't the person you were before them. And part of the sadness is knowing that you have to keep walking when their journey has come to an end. But I don't feel like we leave them behind either, it's more like they get folded into your shadow, a shadow that stretches back across your life, woven from all the stories and characters that touched you.
the insane experience of missing a fictional character . like you can always go back and reread the book , replay the game , rewatch the show or movie , you can always go back & see them , but you can never experience them & their story for the first time again . its absurd to miss them because they'll always be there , but you'll miss when there were still new things for them to say .
for a small time they were real & growing and changing and you hung onto every new word, but now all they can do is repeat the same story forever&ever & they're not real anymore because you know everything they're going to do. & you miss them. its fucked man...

It makes me SICK when I think what they could have been. Like from a writing perspective, having the show end with them being allowed to semi-retire from hunting and be dads would have been such a full-circle, stopping the cycle of violence move.
Both Cas and Dean, the stone-faced angel and daddy's solider, understood family as a duty. As a chain of command. But this? THIS? This is letting the boys heal. Letting them experience a profound love which is selfless but not self-destructive. Having Uncle Sam over for barbeques. Playing fetch with the dog. It's what they deserved. Not fucking superhell and tetnus JNajbfidsnf
happy Father's Day to them

#it's been five years and I'm still not over how bad that ending was#truly truly terrible#destiel#spn#castiel#dean winchester

I feel like sometimes this can translate into a fear of exploring the same idea/theme over and over again as well, at least on my part as a writer. Sometimes we can get so obsessed with the idea of being “original” that we fight our instincts to explore what really matters to us - because we’ve done it before.
But while mining at the same ideas might involve some repetition, if done with the right artistic intention it should also unearth new truths. Kinda reminds me of Ursula Le Guin’s thoughts on meeting your shadows. Exploring same ideas and language can actually be very fruitful - particular in fanfiction which first and foremost should please the writer! It’s the perfect place to practise and play!
I love when I’m reading a fic and it’s evident that the author has a favourite word/phrase/metaphor they like to use because it’s used again and again.
As a writer, I worry that people will find it annoying when I do this but as a reader I find it so endearing, it’s like walking into someone’s bedroom and its immediately obvious what they’re favourite colour is.

dean's humiliation kink gets him off quicker, but his praise kink makes the orgasms more earth shattering and it's bc being praised is even more humiliating for him than being humiliated bc he's the most insane man to exist
#dean#destiel#supernatural#spitting facts tbh#nothing more mortifying that being seen#and Cas sees EVERYTHING

SPN rewatch season two - the fucking Madison Werewolf episode makes me RAGE
WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU’VE SCOURED EVERY SOURCE DEAN
WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU CANT LOCK HER UP BECAUSE SHELL GET OUT? SHE COULDNT EVEN GET OUT OF THE CUPBOARD SAM PUT HER IN.
It’s just - URGH so Kripke at his stupidest. Girl is hot. Sam is awkward (HES A SIX FOOT 4 ADONIS HE DOES NOT STRUGGLE WITH THE LADIES ERIC) Sam bangs girl. Girl must die. Dean is pig who only cares about his brother. Main male character must suffer because men suffering is true art.
#not to mention the fucking retcon with later werewolves#if I was Maddison I would find Dean in Purgatory and hunt his ass down#I’m aware this isn’t necessarily Kripke’s fault BUT HE STARTED IT with the whole theme of what constitutes a monster#I love werewolves#the first werewolf story deserved better#I even liked the special effects they used#affectionately hating on spn#supernatural#spn#dean winchester#sam winchester

Just my opinion but if a fic is labelled explicit it’s not enough to tastefully describe two characters going at it a couple of times.
I want to know the exact sheen and viscosity of the ejaculant. I want impossible amounts of precum referenced every other chapter. A detailed tally of quivers experienced by the labia majora.
Like if aint nasty it aint explicit, ya know? Ao3 explicit should be a special circle of hell which delights its dwellers and horrifies any outsiders
#ao3#ao3 fanfic#fanfiction#fanfic#is this about destiel?#not explicitly but kinda#lol see what I did there?#destiel#supernatural#spn#ao3 tags

I think I’m just fully realizing, as I’m half-rewatching the show via YouTube reaction videos…we really weren’t supposed to love Dean. And we really were not the target audience, and by we I mean a much larger segment of folks than you may think. Eric Kripke (and also Robert Singer) didn’t want a bunch of queer OR mentally ill folks OR women OR people of color OR abuse survivors. Hell, he didn’t even really want an audience of macho manly men!
Eric Kripke was aiming for an audience of Eric Kripkes–the kind of whiny pseudo-intellectual nerdbro who finds men like s1 Dean threatening in real life, thinks being rejected romantically by a woman is comparable to real hardship, views any unfamiliar form of intimacy with some base level of suspicion, and expresses disgust at other men’s promiscuity not because he has more “respect” for women (and don’t get me started on the puritanism of equating sex with disrespect automatically), but because he resents that he can’t do the same.

Charlie hacking the credit cards is so funny because you'd think a show that built itself on the idealization and romanticization of American lower-class masculinity and its aesthetics would take more opportunities to bend Dean over pool tables and bantering with other men, showing off his ‘street smarts’, the show going like how our hero is soooo good at hustling, no one is getting a better grade at performing rugged masculinity than us, I mean our hero, Dean Winchester. But no they said infinite money glitch be upon you!!

Can you imagine Castiel depicted like this? Dean would try and make some sort of low key sexist homophobic remark but wouldn’t be able to get the words out cause Cas would be so pretty his brain would fry 💚💙
