DELTARUNE EGGS-HUSBAND THEORY
Tumblr media
YES THIS IS A REAL AND ACTUAL THEORY AND NOT A JOKE I JUST LIKE MAKING SILLY THUMBNAILS
There are a bunch of small details through these chapters that I've noticed, little things that all kinda point in different directions but I feel leads to somewhere meaningful. This theory is an attempt to compile a bunch of information together to reach one fucking insane out there conclusion I'm swinging for the fences for.
In order to reach that conclusion, we'll have to go over several scattered details: The nature of Dark Worlds, The Prophecy, Chapter 5, the nature of Deltarune as a game. I will also be borrowing pieces of @m0llystars 's "DEVICE THEORY," which I highly recommend you watch in your own time, but if you can't watch a 10 hour video essay series before reading this (coward) I'll summarize what's needed later. Certain assumptions will have to be made, hypotheticals taken as fact, you'll have to roll with me on this one in that regard.
I'm also gonna be informal as fuck because it's midnight and this came to me in a fucking cold sweat after rewatching chapter 2.
I will not deny that this is a fucking crackpot theory, some grade-A deep end shit. But I'm fucking standing by this and dying on this hill (mostly because it's funny). Because in my heart I believe.
ASGORE HAS MET THE EGG MAN
Spoilers for Chapters 3 and 4.
Okay, let's get the biggest hurdle out of the way right now:
DECEMBER HOLIDAY IS THE KNIGHT
No, it's not Carol. I'm not going to spend extensive time debating this fact because there's already a bunch of other videos explaining this point. This idea, this core fundimental, is a cornerstone of this theory. If we wanna go forward with this theory, you'll have to accept that. As for why I believe it, I'll do a lightning round:
1.) The Knight's weapon, when it first appears, is bat-shaped. Dess is known for using a bat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2.) (sort of a lead-in for three) we know Kris and The Knight are working together, based on the phone call. We know this is The Knight and not Carol, because in the Weird Route when Carol calls, it's just a normal dialogue box despite the Soul still being disconnected.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3.) This one is more vibes-based, but I trust my gut on this one: In the final phonecall in Chapter 4's normal route, the person on the other end tells Kris "You promised."
Tumblr media
We don't know what that promise was, but we did get a snapshot of what Carol was like earlier in the chapter. Pronounced. Exact. Cold. And using a phrase like "promise" feels much more personal, familiar, than what Carol is capable of.
Tumblr media
Okay we got that out of the way. Next fundamental!
DECEMBER HOLIDAY WAS LOST IN A SPACE OUTSIDE OF THE WORLD
Largely taking after @m0llystars here again, check out the theory again when you can:
To put it very briefly, The Device Theory is the idea that "Deltarune" the game is the bridge to Deltarune the world. The program you boot up to play Deltarune allows you to connect with the world. This is parallel to how the Light World influences the Dark World: The "Program Layer" is a separate plane of existence that beings like Gaster lurks in, allowing the player to influence the world of Deltarune.
Tumblr media
This isn't to necessarily say that The Program Layer is "above" the Light World. But it's a space where beings like Gaster lurk: "Shattered across time and space," not existing anywhere but technically being anywhere. Could act like the fuckin, backrooms glitching out of reality or something like that.
December, in whatever accident that caused her to disappear, landed in "The program layer." We know this because there is a character named "unused" who talks in the code itself, whose dialogue is never used outside of being quoted by Spamton. Closest thing to being trapped in the "program" layer in my book.
Tumblr media
Okay, final fundamental:
THE KNIGHT CREATED THE FOUNTAINS IN CHAPTERS 1, 2, AND 4
Perhaps the easiest to explain, but has the flimsiest evidence imo.
We know that Kris made the Chapter 3 fountain, we see it happen. And we KNOW that Kris couldn't have created the one in the church, because we were with them the entire time.
Chapter 1, I feel Kris didn't make that one either. Because as this video shows, Kris backs away from the closet when it first appears. They didn't realize it was there.
Chapter 2, Queen says that The Roaring Knight created the fountain that day. Not Kris, who we know now is directly familiar with Queen.
Tumblr media
Admittedly, this fundamental comes down to vibes more than anything. Like I said, you gotta roll with me on these assumptions here.
There, we have our three fundamentals: Dess is the Knight, she was trapped in the Program Layer/somewhere out of the world, and she was the one who created 3/4 fountains.
Now that we got that established, we can get to the meat of this theory:
THE EGG ROOMS ARE INFLUENCED BY WHOEVER CREATED THE FOUNTAIN
For those who went Egg Hunting in Chapter 3, I'm sure you noticed it, right? How fucking weird Chapter 3's egg hunt was?
In every other chapter the Egg hunt is the same: find a sweet spot between two rooms and go back and forth until you enter another room.
But in Chapter 3, it was an entirely different situation: a more traditional "treasure hunt" so to speak. Find a secret room with a puzzle connected to another puzzle, which you can only access by teleporting via spotlight, then getting a ticket which you need to find a very specific enemy to use on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We already know that whoever creates a dark fountain influences what the dark world. Everything involving Susie's fountain in Chapter 4 proves this. Even though it's broken, it feels closer to HER fountain, with how the pianos crash all over the place, more elaborate action setpieces (and arguably because she may be colorblind too).
Susie may not have an egg room to find, but knowing a creator influences their dark world can help inform us as to why the Chapter 3 Egg Room is unique: Because Kris is the one who made that Dark World.
Using that, we can go on to infer that how you reach the Egg Room is indicative of whoever creates it. And this is where the fundamentals come back into play:
in The Knight's egg rooms, you need to find a space between rooms where you warp out of reality, alone, to meet him. An intentional act, yes, but one dependent on random chance and breaking "out of bounds" to speak. The only way you could reasonably know about HOW to do this is by looking in the code itself, or getting very, very lucky.
for Kris, the hunt you do is all within the realms of something you could deduce in the game itself, going on a scavenger hunt and then leaving to somewhere else to meet the man, and gives you a clue on how to find Dess' egg rooms.
Tumblr media
For characters like Susie, who are new in town and likely don't have anything to do with the Egg Man, her dark world doesn't have any way to get there. I think it's noteable that you have two separate chances to obtain the Egg in Chapter 4, but those only are available in The Knight/Dess' Worlds, and skips over Susie's.
Meaning that if someone has a connection to the Egg Man, he will manifest in their Dark World.
This is fun in its own right and could imply a LOT on Kris' past and how they came into relation with The Knight Crew. But there are still various unknowns there, and I'll leave that to others for speculation.
Besides! Don't forget who we're here for!
Tumblr media
Because the Egg Man gives us a very interesting hint for the next day/chapter. One we have reasonable evidence to guess what will happen.
CHAPTER FIVE WILL BE ASGORE'S DARK FOUNTAIN
To argue that Chapter Five will take place in Asgore's flower shop, I feel that's practically non-negotiable. There's a metric ton of foreshadowing pointing to this being the case here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(if you're wondering what that last one is, check out this video)
Arguing that Asgore will CREATE the fountain though is another story. But I believe that there is a VERY likely chance that Asgore, on some level, knows how Dark Worlds work.
I'm going to take another page out of Molly's video essay again: My guess is that, when Dess was involved in an incident that made her go missing, Asgore was also involved. Which lead to him getting removed from the Police.
Tumblr media
We know from some secrets here and there that Carol and Asgore are investigating... something.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(as a side note we can infer these are investigations/conspiracy boards and not plans, because in the Mike minigame, there is an Actual conspiracy board, and Kris says they don't like to look at this stuff, implying they're familiar with these things)
That something is VERY likely the Dark Worlds, and VERY very likely relating to how Dess went missing. With how (let's be blunt here) kinda pathetic Asgore is at this point, and how little business his shop brings in, there's next to no reason for Carol, cold heart that she is, to support him. But there's something likely keeping him in her good graces, some sort of lead, perhaps in finding Dess:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A Shard of the Black Knife
This is not a shadow crystal. Whenever we see a shadow crystal in the Light World it's described as "a piece of glass," transparent in nature. The Black Shard, however, is one of the few things that carry over their appearance into the Light World, and ONLY comes from The Knight's weapon. Meaning Asgore has encountered Dark World magic before.
I don't fully believe he knows EVERYTHING, like a Dark World's exact properties, but he likely knows the basics of how they work, and how to open one.
And with how insistent Asgore is in wanting Tori to understand "how he wanted to protect everyone," he'd probably want to just show her outright how they work.
But these are moreso justifications as to why Asgore COULD make a dark fountain, not evidence to show he WILL. But I feel we have a key clue that could explain that:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THE EGG MAN'S HINT FOR SUNDAY / CHAPTER FIVE IS UNIQUE
As said before: The reason Kris' Egg Room was unique is because THEY were the one who made the fountain. For Dess' it was to glitch warp, for Kris it was to hunt. and here once again, WE HAVE A NEW SET OF INSTRUCTIONS FOR WHAT TO DO!
This COULD be another Kris fountain under this logic: both this and Chapter 3 involve "moving to the left." And this is another instance where we'll have to go off of vibes and intuition: WHY would Kris make a dark fountain in Asgore's shop, with the foreshadowing we've seen? If the Vast Garden is charred through "jealousy," and we know that Dark Worlds reflect the feelings of their creator, why would "jealousy" be the word to use? If Kris doesn't enjoy Asgore's presence and the conspiracy boards, would it not be done as an act of vindication? Revenge? Freedom, even? I'm trying to focus on the thematic context of this potential event, not just how wild or cool it would be. Having it be Asgore would be more narratively understandable.
But if Asgore's fountain has an Egg Room, that would mean he would have had to encounter the Egg Man before, right? That's why Susie's world didn't have one. While it is pure speculation, I believe that Asgore saw the Egg Man when trying to find Dess, and would soon be getting removed from the force. This one is, again, gut intuition. But this one comes from the fact that in the Chapter 4 Egg Room, it appears as some sort of flashback to "Therapy." Perhaps for Kris, perhaps for Dess, but nevertheless involving them trying to sketch what they saw behind the tree -- seeing the Egg Man. And if Kris can see the man, whose to say others can't as well? Whose to say, in chasing down Dess/The Knight as deep as he could go, he saw the very thing that Dess was trapped with?
Tumblr media
if this memory is something that Kris brought with them, if it's something several people can see, then
All of these points together, I feel there's a decent enough case to build for the argument:
-We know Asgore is aware of how Dark Worlds work
-It's likely Asgore will create the Chapter 5 Fountain
-We know that Egg Rooms change depending on who created the fountain
-It's likely the Chapter 5 fountain is different from Kris and the Knight's
All of these together, rounds us out to our end goal:
ASGORE HAS ENCOUNTERED THE EGG MAN BEFORE
In conclusion:
Tumblr media
Noble Deltaruners
I rest my fucking case

One time a friend told me that if she wanted to have a chill night she would come to me and ask for tea and a book to read. I didn’t like tea at the time, but I always made sure my cupboards had them in case she needed a quiet night. One time I told my boss that I loved oranges, but couldn’t peel them because of my nails. For a year he made sure to peel me one at least once a week. Once my friends gave me a made up superlative of “most likely to have a pen they could borrow” and ever since I’ve made sure I always carry a pen with me. A long time ago, my high school librarian told me that no one would care what my grade in my sophomore chemistry class was if I’m bringing them doughnuts and asking them about their day.

Man, we have got to stop treating art like it has an expiration date. That show stopped airing? Doesn’t mean it can’t haunt your every waking thought. Everybody’s into this album, but you don’t have the energy for new music right now? It’ll be waiting for you when you’re ready. That movie’s fifty years old and indie as shit? Incredible, you have the chance to share it with folks who might never otherwise feel that particular punch of delight. Books don’t go bad. Shows inspire fandoms decades after they’ve wrapped up. We’re still looking at cave paintings and statue work from ancient times and letting the joy of creation bring tears to our eyes. That’s the point of art. It’s as close to immortality as we ever get. Why try to give that magic a shelf life?

Man, this is such an interesting exchange, cause, like… in most stories, when a character says they'd like things to go on forever, that they want something eternal, they're pretty much setting themselves up for a very rude awakening. You know, nothing lasts forever, sometimes you have to learn how to let go, sometimes you need to move on. I mean, that's one of the core themes of Undertale.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Flowey/Asriel's whole motivation in the Pacifist Route is to make the Game go on forever, to put the ending eternally out of reach, to trap Frisk in an infinite time loop because he just can't move on from Chara's death.
Part of the narrative is that if the Player RESETs a Pacifist Route then they are no better than he was, since now they are also yanking everyone away from their Happy Ending so that we can play with them again, because we can't accept the game has Ended. The Murder Route is less focused on that whole theme but you replay it over and over again Chara will basically call you a weirdo for your obsessive clinginess to this world.
Tumblr media
Part of Undertale's themes is the importance of an Ending to a story. A True Pacifist Player's true and final act of selflessness is to let go of their desire have things keep going for forever, to give up on Eternity… for the sake of the happiness of every other character in this world, for the sake of their Happy Ending.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the other hand, as a Wise Dog once said…
Tumblr media
Both Undertale and Deltarune love exploring the ways in which the world of a game is different or similar to the real world, how the perspective of a Player is so different from the perspective of an actual character living in this world and... Real Life doesn't have a clear set ending.
The Player is the only one from whom the story just ended. Everyone else just kept living their stories of friendship together, although they probably never experienced something as high-stakes as the events of 'Undertale' ever again. And... when endings do seem to come, they're not going to be as clear-cut and satisfying and clearly communicated as the Game Ending is to the Player.
…But on the other other hand, it is still true that some things in life do end and we do have to accept that. Like… you know, the most famous Ending in life… is Death.
Tumblr media
Gerson hears Susie talk about how she wants things to go on forever, but he already decided he has no interest in Eternity himself. He knows that the Three Heroes are here to seal the Fountains that revived him, he knows that when they succeed he'd go back to being a dust-covered hammer, probably never to be revived again and… he's perfectly at peace with that. He's an old man who died from natural causes, he had a long, full and satisfying life, he already had his ending. What's happening now is some weird glorified epilogue, but he knows it will end soon. And that's fine by him, because the time for his story has ended.
He does have one major regret in life, his failure to properly support his son's writing, and he spends all of the time the Dark has given him to try and make up for it. But it's really just a matter of asking Susie to deliver his message. He doesn't try to maintain or expand the Dark World so he could make up for his mistakes or try to pull Alvin in so he could meet him again or find a way to come back to life in the Light World somehow… I wonder if Someone was expecting him to do something like that and that's why they tried to give him that Shadow Crystal, but we all know that didn't work
Tumblr media
In a way… we've already seen Susie's rude awakening for her desire for a 'forever'. She formed such a powerful bond with "the Old Man", she definitely would've wanted their time together to last longer, to last as long as it could, to last forever. But that's not possible.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And even his appearance in the Third Sanctuary was kind of a surprise stroke of luck that shouldn't be taken for granted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The whole point of the Second Sanctuary is that Susie realized that Gerson was dead in the Light World, and trying to cope with this idea, went straight to a kind of denial.
Well, she can just pop over to the Dark World and, like, ask him what the Door Code is, right? No big deal! I mean, it's not exactly like Susie and Kris were really at a dead-end, there were plenty of areas in the Church they haven't checked thoroughly at all (not just the Fire Extinguisher)…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It wasn't because she HAD to do it for the Door Code, it's because she had to do it to reassure herself that her new friend isn't really gone, that maybe he'll be there waiting for her in his study if she just High-Key Stab Reality and Unleash the Flow of Pure Darkness Energy…
But it wasn't that simple. At best you can say his appearance in the Third Sanctuary means that he can manifest in any Church Dark World created by the Knight… but seeing how Susie's whole goal at the moment is to stop the Knight from making more Dark Fountains, that's not exactly increasing her chances to see the Old Man again.
When they go to seal the Fountain, Susie muses about her 'stupid dream' that things will just… stay the same. That she'll keep having fun Dark World adventures with her friends through eternity. But she knows that although Kris fully understands her, that's not what's going to happen. It's both about how the stakes and seriousness of the story have been so overtly raised for her, the Knight and the Titans aren't just an ominous background detail. She has fought them both. But it's also because she is already experiencing an Ending right now. She knows that when Kris seals this Fountain, she will probably never see Gerson again.
Tumblr media
…But despite all of that, I don't think the narrative completely rebuke Susie's desire for Eternity. After all, Gerson heard her say that, fully knowing his own fate, and he mostly seemed intrigued? It doesn't seem to waver his belief that she's the one who should be writing the story, that he could count on her to defy fate in the name of Justice. Y'know, Susie wasn't really thinking of the Inevitability of Death at that moment, she was just thinking that… she would like to keep having fun adventures with her friends in perpetuity. And is that such a bad thing to wish for?
I mean, just because something was a theme in Undertale doesn't mean that Deltarune can't use Susie to drive home the point of 'well, yeah, you're not wrong, but it's a bit more nuanced than that", there's precedence, in fact.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm thinking about, like, the Tenna storyline in Chapter 3. That was also about someone who needs to move on, Tenna is clinging to his happier past in unhealthy way and wants the fun of his game show to last forever. He also wanted his own version of Eternity. But the game still draws a contrast between Ralsei, who just tells him to remember the happy times and accept that everything ends, including his use
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Susie, who is the one who rejects this mindset. Her solution still has some level of moving on and accepting that the Dreemurr-Holiday Family Unit has ended, but that doesn't mean he's just got to lay down and accept that his whole life is over. She comes up with a plan that ensures the continuation of his life and his dreams. It's an Ending of sorts, but an Ending that has a continuation attached to it. And it came specifically from Susie's distaste for endings, from her aggressive rejection of going gently into that good night.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are certain things, certain endings, we all have to accept, but there is also so much that is worth rebelling against, that is worth fighting for. Susie's desire for an 'Eternity' might be a bit oversimplistic, but it is also the source of her rebellious spirit, out-of-the-box-thinking and the shining hope that Gerson sees in her. So I don't think the story will dismiss it outright, we really just have to wait and see just how much of that 'Eternity' Susie will manage to keep...

"Back, back, to your own place! Your time is not yet come. Wait! Have patience! To-night is mine. To-morrow night is yours!" There was a low, sweet ripple of laughter, and in a rage I threw open the door, and saw without the three terrible women licking their lips. As I appeared they all joined in a horrible laugh, and ran away. I came back to my room and threw myself on my knees. It is then so near the end? To-morrow! to-morrow! Lord, help me, and those to whom I am dear!
Even with the context of knowing the ensuing events of the novel--hell, just the events of the next day--this entry puts my stomach in so many knots the more I dwell on it. Those last lines...
It is then so near the end? To-morrow! to-morrow! Lord, help me, and those to whom I am dear!
Two months. Two solid months of wall-to-wall psychological torture in trying to appease and entertain Dracula to save his actual throat, trying day after day after day to hold his sanity together, to find a route to safety, to not just crack and toss himself to the cliff. Two months. And here he is, at the deadline, and it's come to less than nothing.
As Jonathan writes this last panicked entry in whatever interim exists between now and the Count coming to take his long-delayed taste, he is rationing out the seconds. The last ones he may have alive. Or human. Tick, tick, tick.
(Nothing, nothing, nothing. All this acting all this misery all this Hell for nothing. God. Please, God.)
Tick. Tick. Tick.

Part of the reason I'm so adamant about encouraging people to get comfortable with bugs, my own interests aside, is because we cannot have a bright, solarpunk future without them.
A green future is not a bugless future. It is, in fact, a fairly bugful future. If you care about ecological stability, then you need to start with bugs, because they're the most at risk with our current use of pesticides.
