Client: Can’t i just pay this collection off and tell them to remove it? Me: Not a good idea. If you pay anything on bad debt, it will renew the report date and the collection account will remain on the report for a longer period of time. Even though it says zero balance, it is still a negative effect on your credit scores. In fact, it may lower the scores even more. Client: A friend of mine did that before and it worked. Me: Some years ago it may have worked, the laws were not being enforced as they do now a days. If a company gets caught letting a client pay them so they can delete the account off the credit reports, they will get sued by the companies that oversee their finances for example: FTC and FCRA Client: I remember i did that one time. I called the company, owed them 1,000 but paid them 300 only if they agreed to remove it from my credit and it worked. Me: Was the account on your report more than 3 years? Client: Yes Me: Then that company could not sue you for that debt. Meaning you didn’t have to pay them because they can no longer take you to court to get their money. Sorry to be blunt, but you just threw money away, can i have it instead 😁. Also me: And if the account was already at it’s time that it was supposed to fall off your credit, it was not removed because you paid it, it may have been removed because it was probably already supposed to be off. So the company got your money and they also wrote off the balance on their taxes as a loss years ago. Did you know i do taxes as well so it is my job to know these things?
