You will find that when you look at life and people through the eyes of non-judgement, you attain a special x-ray vision that allows you to see past the bad and straight through to the good.

Jessie Groveman understands the art of living well. With a Masters in Art Therapy from NYU and time spent in the bucolic Berkshires studying yoga, Jessie learned to integrate her passions—healthy living, wellness, art, and food—into a balanced approach to life—and it shows. When we caught up with her, the newly-transplanted Angeleno radiated with positivity and peace, which makes her new site, How You Glow, even more aptly named. Here, Jessie shows us the secret to starting your day right. (Hint: It's green).

Comfort Food
New York has an incredible food scene with new restaurants opening every day. I make sure to try at least one new place when I visit, however a trip to NY is not complete without a meal from a few of my old favorite spots. The first place I eat after landing is usually Cafe Mogador. I wish more than anything that they would open up a west coast version in LA--I've searched and still haven't found anywhere that makes a middle eastern breakfast as perfect as this one. When I lived in the East Village I always went to the cozy location on St. Marks. Since then, a nicer, cleaner and more spacious location has opened in Williamsburg. Both have excellent food, amazing strong coffee, and a great vibe. You can't go wrong.

If you like spice, make sure to order extra harissa (pictured above).
The best.

What is wisdom? Do what you should do when you should do it. Refuse to do what you should not do; And, when it is not clear, wait until you are sure.

Laura Owens
I was blown away by LA based artist Laura Owens' larger than life exhibition.  Her paintings are massive and incredibly captivating; like optical illusions, each painting changes with the distance its viewed from. Thick 3-D layers of paint are applied like giant brush strokes, creating a dramatic visual effect when layered over her neatly silkscreened and hand painted imagery. The work references the digital world, yet still maintains a painterly, expressive quality. Apparently all twelve canvases were made on site and painted within this amazing off the beaten path gallery space, located in downtown LA at Mission Road. The show is a collaboration between the artist and Gavin Brown’s Enterprise. If you need more incentive to make the trek, Ooga Booga has set up shop at the entrance of the space offering a unique selection of art/book/ fashion items in its retail store.

OTHERWILD
Finding little gems that you never knew existed is what keeps any city interesting and intriguing.  Luckily, there are so many mini-cities within the city of Los Angeles, each full of various little pockets to discover and explore. One day while driving through Echo Park, I stumbled upon OTHERWILD GOODS & SERVICES, a funky hybrid retail store and graphic design studio.  The beautifully airy space is filled with a curated selection of goods from jewelers, ceramicists, perfumers, artists, designers, herbalists, quilters, fabricators, musicians, witches, picklers, woodworkers, curators, photographers, dancers and publishers. Everything in the store has a very one of a kind, special feel to it; nothing mass produced or main stream will be found here. This lovely shop is definitely a happy discovery.
