TITLE: argument & gentle giants

Characters: Ler!elephant x Lee!young dick x Bruce Wayne.

prompt: after an argument dick sneaks out after dark (as robin of course) to go to the zoo and gets cheered up by some park elephants before the Batman finds him, makes up and they go home. Also dick is around 9 at this point.

(Might also rewrite the ending but anyways enjoy!)

The Fic:

“are you done with work yet?” dick asked as he stood in the doorway of Bruce's office “not yet, still have to write a report. Unfortunately" Bruce said not looking up from his computer.

"Aren't you the boss? can't you ask someone else to do it?” dick said, leaning on the chair opposite of the desk. “heh, no i cant. As a boss I have big responsibilities. even though its annoying sometimes” Bruce said looking up

“but you're almost always working!” dick started "Even weekends!” dick said, getting frustrated, standing up straight again as he wanted to spend time with Bruce. Play or do something fun at least.

“dick, you know I can't help it. But it's also late, so you should be in bed.” Bruce said a little sternly, not really meaning to but being tired it came out that way. “But I don't even have school tomorrow! can'tI at least stay up a little longer?” dick wined.

“You're 10, you need sleep,” Bruce said, looking at dick with raised eyebrows.”Can you at least come with?” dick said, crossing his arms. “Not tonight I have the report-” Bruce started to explain before he was interrupted by dick

“hmph.. stupid work..” he mumbled irritated as he turned and left before Bruce could finish. Bruce meanwhile, tired with dealing with work and sad that he had to turn dick away rubbed his face with a sigh, he had definitely messed up.

A little later dick had snuck down to the batcave through the garden and to a “backdoor” and got his robin suit. Planning on running away for the evening as a little rebelling against his bedtime but also just wanting to cure his boredom.

After dick got dressed he was soon out the cave tunnel to the road and made his way into the city, and a few building rooftops and jumps later he was sneaking into the city zoo.

It was dark but most lights were still on in the park, something that always confused dick even while on patrol since he always wondered why they didn't just turn them off to save money on bills, who knew?

At last dick found the enclosure he was looking for, the elephants.

He and Bruce had been here as civilians in the daytime. It was nice to see them normally but now that dick was alone and no one could stop him he could sneak into the enclosure and properly say hi to his favorite animals.

climbing up on the roof of the elephant house dick slid down a drain pipe into the enclosure, smiling a little as he slowly walked up to one of the sleeping giants.

“Um.. hello?” he said softly, not wanting to scare them as they all slowly woke up, looking at him and raising their heads. Curious about the little costumed kid that had somehow gotten into the enclosure when there were 3 types of wall and fence between the humans and them.

“uh, my name's dick. I am not mean I promise!” dick said, looking at them all, a little nervous as one stood up slowly before walking over, curiously reaching her trunk over to sniff him and tug at his cape.

“You like my kape?” dick smiled a little, showing it as he turned to the side to show his cape to the elephant, letting out a giggle as the elephant lifted the cape over his head before nuzzling the tip of her trunk in the back of his neck. “hehey! that thihickles” dick smiled, jumping a little forward and untangling his cape from his head. Turning around smiling playfully as he put his hands on his sides, trying to act a little like Bruce when he would find dick climbing something he shouldn't.

The elephant however just puffed air in his face with her trunk making dick giggle again. “i miss spending time with animals this close” dick smiled petting the trunk “maybe i can visit more often” dick smilled, his mind sticking to reminiscing a little, the elephant noticed dick stopping up and his smile faltering a little so she poked his chin with her trunk to pull him out of his thoughts again.

“hm? Oh I should probably take this off..?” Dick smiled rocking on his heels looking up at the elephant when he snapped out of his thoughts. Quickly thinking of safety he took off his belt of tools placing it safely on the roof of the enclosure climbing up there.

Much to the surprise of the elephants and the one that he had been talking too who tried to reach up to get dick down, almost like a worried mother

“Don’t worry” dick smiled sitting on the edge of the roof “I am careful” he smiled swinging his legs grinning as them both got caught by the elephants trunk wrapping around them gently, as she wanted to help him down. “Woah!!” Dick said with glee as he was placed back on the ground “so what do you want to do?” Dick smiled now ready.

“How about hide and seek?” Dick smiled remembering the elephant didn’t probably know how to suggest anything. “Yeah, that's probably going to be difficult to explain..” dick added thinking while the elephant curiously poked dick again, trying to see if she could make him laugh again, having a little understanding that it was a happy reaction earlier and wanted to see it again.

“Eheheh- Yohou are being cheeky on purpose !” dick smiled with his hands on his side after stepping to the left again as he felt the elephant's trunk nudge his side, the elephant just snorted looking amused as she reached to do it again.

taking a few steps forward while dick smiled, beginning to feel giddy as he stepped backwards to keep the distance, inadvertently starting a small game of tag.

Giggling a little, dick jogged in circles and jumped around to try dodge the elephant's trunk as she followed him, trumpeting a little as she walked.

“Catch me if you cahan” dick giggled as stepped up onto a rock, going to the next and the next before jumping off the rocks and onto the grass again dick smiled as he walked backwards, loving the game of tag as he would go slower just for the rush of almost getting caught and then get away at the last minute.

What he hadn’t paid attention to was the other elephants in the enclosure watching curiously, one of them even stretching out her trunk to snatch dick from behind and pull him into a hug where she was resting and was laying there.

“Ah!- Hehey! Woah!” Dick giggled as he was caught looking down in surprise seeing the trunk wrapped around his waist and yelping as he was pulled backwards and tripped on his feet but was held up a little by the trunk.

“Tihihis doesn’t cohohount! You hahad help” dick giggled crossing his arms playfully looking up as the first elephant, his giggles scrambling his words as she got closer since he knew from experience with Bruce, even though she was an animal, what was coming next.

Soon dick was sitting in the grass with trunks poking and squeezing his ticklish spots, the two curious elephants had their fun. Clearly happy and understanding that dick was happy too, seeing his body language as the boy wonder laughed.

“Hehey! Okahahay okahahay- nohohot thehehere!” Dick laughed as he tried to shuffle away but was pulled back into an almost hug by the elephant that was lying on the ground.

Letting out a shriek as the standing one had gotten her trunk to his ribs and was almost munching on them as if she was picking up a bunch of leaves making dick fall into a giggle fit “EeeHeheh! Nohohot thehehe- RiHibs! Eheheh-“ dick giggled uncontrollably wanting to curl up like a bug as the feeling of tickly electric shocks spread around his ribcage and down his sides waking the butterflies in his stomach to go crazy.

Back at the manour Bruce had finally finished that damned monthy report and was on his way to dicks bedroom to apologise and make up as he could guess the boy had stayed up most likely out of irritasjon.

What he didn’t expect was to find the room empty with no sign of dick, staying calm but starting to worry Bruce walked around the house to every spot he knew dick either liked to climb or hang out in.

Finding nothing after a while he tried to

Think, he couldn’t have gone out as robin.. his office was the entrance and he would have noticed. Unless he had been so focused on work not to, no that couldn’t be it.

Unless he went the long way around..

Bruce quickly went down to the cave to see, alerting Alfred to stay home in case dick came back or keep an eye on robin sightings after he saw dicks suit was gone.

As he got dressed to go out as Batman to look he remembered the city zoo they had gone to the week before, also remembering having to almost hold dick back from getting too close.

A little relieved he knew where to look Bruce went off into the night to look.

When he got to the zoo he landed by the front gates and snuck inn, quietly walking around as he had all the cameras temporarily loop as he walked around.

A few minutes later he had spotted robins belt hanging on a fence, jogging up he saw the scene of robin lying in the grass up against the side of one of the elephants, with a trunk wrapped over the boy as a makeshift blanket, sound asleep.

Letting out a relived sigh, shaking his head he hadn’t realised how tense he was, until now that he had found dick and that he hadn’t been found or taken by anyone.

Bruce got over the fence and into the enclosure. Gently and quietly walking up. Making sure to act slowly and carefully to not scare the 5,443 kg animal. “Hey, chum? You awake?” Bruce said gently as he got down on one knee and reached to gently shake dicks shoulder.

“Hmph..? Oh- im awake..” dick said as he quickly remembered why he was out in a zoo so late at night. “Are you okay? Your not hurt?” Bruce asked, his eyes scanning for any sign of injury on the boy wonder. “Im okay.. im sorry I went out without telling you..” dick said looking down “I know you are, and I should probably be giving you a lecture about going out on your own this late, but I think you already have and I can guess Alfred has one for you tomorrow. And I am sorry too” Bruce said looking at dick, who looked up, a little surprised as he was sure he was in the wrong. Not Bruce, until he spoke “I am sorry I let work take up so much time, and for not coming to talk with you after our argument.” Bruce said gently.

“It’s okay, you had important work..” dick said sitting up “my work was important yes, but not more than you. I shouldn’t have responded how I did” Bruce said as he helped dick get up, and not wake the elephant. “How about we make a deal? I promise to make more time to take time off in the weekends and you promise to tell me when you come here on your own?” Bruce said holding dick on his hip.

“Deal” dick smiled as he glanced back at the sleeping giants. “Good, and I am guessing you made some friends before I got here?” Bruce said with a amused smile as dick sheepishly nodded. “They remind me of the circus, and Zika," dick said as Bruce shifted how he was holding dick into a hug like kind of hold.

“Thats good, to keep the memory alive” Bruce said softly “did you have fun with them?” Bruce asked as they walked over to where dick had hung his robin tool belt.

“Mhm, played some games” dick smiled as he was starting to feel sleep taking its toll on his eyes again. “So even after I had to stop you from sneaking inside last week when we visited in the day, you found a loophole.” Bruce teased feeling a little bit proud of how dick had snuck out but also making a mental note to install more outside security in case this happened again, he knew it would, but that was futures Batmans problem. Right now his priority was to get dick home to bed.
