Set before the events of Age of Ultron.  Steve has been living at Avenger’s Tower.
Tony likes to buy gifts, but only for certain people.
In which Tony is incredibly dysfunctional at making his intentions known and decides to show his affections through incredibly expensive gifts.
So, you know, business as usual. The dialogue in this one is the highlight.

He's fast and she's weird.
This was an interesting take on Steve and Maria, and made me want to see more of the pairing. Their relationship is complicated, professional, and tied up in the expectations of others, and waiting and watching to see how they approach the topic is the highlight of this story.
Also, Steve having a thing for powerful women in charge is very nice.

Foggy Nelson has almost adjusted to running a law firm with his best friend.  He is working on adjusting to aforementioned best friend having superpowers.
Foggy gets the important things in life, like hurling things at his friend’s face.
It’s a shame this fic is so short. I think this topic calls for a long, drawn out epic of Foggy seeing what Matt can catch and/or dodge.

Steve's first kiss since 1945.  Smut fluff with a little past angst.
Read this thinking that it would be a short smut fic with Steve and Sam, and, well, that isn’t necessarily wrong, but it’s so much more than that.
What starts out as hot, crazed making out on the couch quickly turns into some heavy things about sexuality in the 1940s, internalized homophobia, loneliness, etc. It was far more nuanced than expected, and a very pleasant surprise.

In which Bucky goes into caretaker mode when Steve gets whammied and reverts to his pre-serum state.
What it says on the tin. Apparently taking care of Steve is so ingrained in Bucky that he reverts from taking down HYDRA to cooing over Steve. It’s cute and amusing, and definitely worth reading just for the mental image of Steve in too-small yoga pants.
Thanks for that, author.

Tony calls Pepper before they take off for the final battle with Ultron.
A short, homesick fic about Tony missing Pepper, and all the things never said between them when it’s obvious they don’t need to. It’s sweet, and reminds me how disappointing it was that Pepper wasn’t in Age of Ultron.

The Winter Soldier doesn't remember Steve Rogers, but he needs Rogers' help.
OR: The one where Bucky doesn't remember Steve, but falls in love with him anyway.
The main reason I’m reccing this is because it’s the most dysfunctional, swath of bodies, oh my god how many crimes did you commit, HYDRA revenge fic I’ve ever read. See, this is why you don’t go all vigilante on things because you end up crash landing a jet in the middle of nowhere because you ran out of gas and you had to get back into the states somehow.
I kept thinking it couldn’t get worse. And then it did. And then I was expecting it to be smoothed over at the end, but it wasn’t. And for that, I have to applaud the author because wow this fic is depressing. Sure, there’s a love story in there somewhere, but at what cost?!
Warnings for graphic violence, death, mentions of past non-con, and HYDRA being way worse than advertised.

The morning after the night before: Natasha and Steve’s idea of pillow talk is to conduct a thorough examination of their issues until sex ensues, and Bucky thinks they think too much (or he would, if they told him what they were talking about).
What it says on the tin. This one’s extremely happy and relaxed, with some sex thrown in just to make it even better. The writer manages to capture Steve and Natasha’s voice very well and the writing almost makes you feel as if you’re a fly on the wall in the bedroom. It’s lovely.

While on a mission storming a HYDRA facility, James Buchanan Barnes touches one of the many strange alien devices collected by the Red Skull. He does this, in fact, twice— in the past, and in the future.
Next thing he knows, Bucky Barnes is opening his eyes in the 21st century, which is full of great gadgets and coffee, and at least includes his old pal Steve. (And, inexplicably, a different Stark.) Meanwhile, the Winter Soldier finds himself in the middle of World War Two, helping Captain America hunt down HYDRA (which is at least familiar), pretending to be Bucky Barnes (which is not), and figuring out the very noisy group of soldiers who call themselves the Howling Commandos.
Time travel shenanigans are my guilty pleasure in fanfiction. This one has the one-two punch of both having pre-WS Bucky transported to the future, and post-WS Bucky sent back in time.
They both have mountains to climbs as far as learning to exist, for however long it lasts.
This one’s an emotional roller coaster, and is very bittersweet and almost tragic. (Yes, let’s make the sad boys cry more, that’s always fun.)

“You don’t pass or fail at being a person, dear.”
Wherein Natasha Romanov has a bucket list and a metaphorical feelings-cat, joins the Victoria Hand Rescue Society Inc, and is absolutely not dating either or both of her super-soldier BFFs from the 1940s, no matter what Nick Fury thinks.
This is possibly the most in-depth Natasha-centered fic I’ve read, which is a crying shame. Most of the fics I find for her are from the 2012 Avengers burst of fic era, which pales in comparison to what’s available for characterization in the following movies. (Okay, CA:WS. I’m ignoring 5 Minutes of Ultron for now because $10 says certain parts are retconned.)
In this story, Natasha hangs out with Steve, Bucky, and sometimes Sam, as she works through her list. It involves a lot of things, like learning how to cook, visiting the Niagara Falls, working at a book store, and skydiving for fun. In the process a lot of self-realizations are had.
It’s such a good narrative on Natasha that it’s worth a read even if you like her, but don’t like the pairing. The romance is an important piece of the story, but it’s not the point, and that’s the best part.

"It's a freezing day, maybe he'll hit the ice and have nothing but a couple of bruises to show for it.
Steve hits the ice and goes straight through."
OR
Steve falls into a frozen lake, and he's really not okay.
It’s mildly disturbing how long it takes the rest of the Avengers to realize Steve’s not okay. That’s the most heartbreaking part about this, that somehow Bucky’s the only one who understands he needs help besides simply being fished out.
Kind of like the rest of his life, if you stop to think about it. And how depressing is that.
Warning for panic attacks.

Daredevil makes it onto TV in one of his less death-defying moments - relatively speaking - and Foggy decides that this, at least, is an acceptable part of superhero-ing.
This fic made me realize Foggy gets me, because if I saw my friend doing stupid things on TV, I would also think it is likely the best day of my life.
Yeah this is another one of those fics that are way too short, but entertaining nonetheless.

Jerry Richards is having a horrible week.
To top it off, his truck is stolen from the mall parking lot. (To be fair, he didn't know it was used to help superheroes.)
Can I just say, thank you so much to this author for writing this. What happened to that SUV after Steve had taken such care in chastising Nat on not getting it dirty and then hearing nothing else about it bugged me so bad after the movie.
Like I know it probably exploded with the missile attack but surely Steve would have tried to repay it. Surely.
(Maybe this is why he said he was broke?)

Steve's hair is matted and damp, his eyes closed, dark like bruises in the hollows of his face. He’s in a bad way. A real bad way, and Sam can tell; he’s seen this before, this sort of slow dying.
(Sam's blood type is O negative. It was useful during his service, and it's useful now.)
Yeah so this is probably a very, er, panic-inducing way to get together. Good thing Sam’s so cool, calm and collected, right? /hollow laughter
This one’s borderline tragic and a more realistic take on the cost of searching for Bucky and taking down HYDRA. Sam’s in way too deep, and this is not a big romantic affair.
Warnings for graphic depictions of blood and such.

Clint had peered at him out of one eye and said, "You know pink's a girl's color."
"Not in my day, bub," Bucky said, sliding the tube of the grenade launcher up, chambering the shell, and racking it back down as he stared coolly at Clint. "You know who started that pink is feminine shit? Hitler."
Basically a short fic about Bucky doing what he wants, even if that's against "modern" gender norms. Steve is very on board, as usual.
There's a missed opportunity about Bucky doing his nails after the Captain America shield though. I'm disappointed.

All Clint wanted was to get laid.
(In which Clint meets a mysterious man who may or may not be named Phil,  and accidentally stumbles into a big conspiracy where very few things are what they seem to be.)
Ah yes, pre-Age of Ultron fics. It was a simpler shipping time.
I wasn’t expecting this one to be as entertaining as it was, but it turned out to be a fun action romp. It takes a different spin on the SHIELDRA debacle, and sets up Clint and Phil to be on opposing sides at first, but of course they end up sleeping with each other before they discover that. Seems about par for the course.
What I really want to know is who’s paying for Phil’s suits. Is he paying for them out of his own pocket? Is it seized/stolen mission money?? Is it secret Swiss bank accounts???

Steve lives in Stark Tower and doesn't have much to do when he's not going after Hydra strongholds.  He attends charity events to make Pepper happy.  He goes hiking with Sam.  He hangs out with Clint in Bed-Stuy and watches Dog Cops.  Sometimes Tony gives him super alcohol in a sippy cup.  Sometimes he sees Bucky out of the corner of his eye and wonders if it's real or if he's starting to lose his mind.
Alternately, the one with terrible jokes, a foot chase through the Lower East Side, and a tiny little robot named Shitcan.
This story is something special.
It’s got enough cynicism to sink a boat, is brutally honest about violence, injury and war, manages to make Tony Stark one of the most empathetic characters, adds in a painful relationship that hurts, addresses depression without actually saying anything about it, and manages to be a Steve and Bucky recovery story that is not wrapped up in the over-sentimentality trope that so many others fall into.
There are also a lot of dark jokes, and Steve is a giant cynic. It’s wonderful.
It’s honestly difficult to write a review on this because all I want to do is scream about how good it is. Seeing as that’s not awfully coherent, I’m stuck trying to describe how the author artfully weaves together several moving parts and individual back stories without pointing attention to them, the amazing dynamics between the team, the spot-on dialogue and sometimes caustic sarcasm, and how refreshing and satisfying it is to read. This one will stick in the back of my thoughts for a while.
