How do horses run; and the work needed to find out
150 years ago this year, the work started to solve a question that bothered lots of people just a little, but one person entirely too much: Does a horse lift all four hooves off the ground in a full gallop?

The man with too much focus on this issue was Leland Stanford, former governor of California, founder of Stanford University, and horse overenthusiast. I'm not getting into a "human eye can only see 30 FPS" thing, but it's hard to tell with the naked eye exactly how a horse is moving its legs when running as fast as possible. Stanford insisted that everyone illustrating horses running was doing it wrong, and was going to prove it.
I'm not exaggerating when I say how much this bothered Stanford. The project ended up taking several years and $50,000 in 1870s money, which works out to about $1.2 million today. He really, really wanted to know what his racehorses were doing.
He contracted with early photographer Eadweard Muybridge, a similarly weird character. Eadweard's was named "Edward" but changed it to the Old English for... some reason. He had a lot of other interesting experiences. Look it up.
Well, the problem with figuring out the horse thing is that it was the 1870s. We're still close to the era where you had to sit very still for a photo, and horses in a gallop aren't good at doing that. Even a quick image in good conditions took fifteen seconds to a minute to expose properly. Muybridge became the world's expert on high-speed photography. He was able to get at least blurry silhouettes at first, but it wasn't good enough for Stanford. He wanted a video.
This was an interesting request at a time when video photography didn't exist either. Technically, it would be "chronophotography", photography that includes the passage of time. Other attempts at chronophotography included slow-moving subjects and perfect conditions. A horse wasn't that.
Muybridge was distracted for a bit when he went on trial for murder (he did it), but he got back to the horse thing. The horse had to be trained to walk on white sheets to create contrast for the camera. Muybridge invented a new camera system with springs that would keep the shutter time extremely short, 1/500th of a second. Still not good enough for Stanford.
Muybridge decided it was time to go all-out by 1878. Twelve separate cameras in a line. A series of wires strung across the track, each connected to one of the cameras. When the horse tripped a wire, its corresponding camera took a photo. Hey, it's basically the same method used for the bullet time in The Matrix!
It was a complete success. Muybridge captured the full motion of a horse, and Stanford got what he wanted: An image of a horse with all four legs fully off the ground while moving. Worth it, I guess? The Horse in Motion is considered a pivotal moment in film technology. Muybridge didn't stop there and continued to be a pioneer in camera technology, capturing 360 degree panoramas and many studies of motion on film.
Postnote: The photo series proved controversial because many artists didn't really like being told they were doing horses wrong. Sculpting master Auguste Rodin claimed his sculptures were still more accurate than the photos, because his sculptures depicted what a human saw, not this technology. Too bad Rodin, still got the legs pointing the wrong way. Edgar Degas and Thomas Eakins adjusted their styles to match real life.

I just saw a tweet (from Mia Khalifa, surprisingly (because i didn't know she was a comics fan)) talking about how batman's early loss of his parents being the catalyst of him being Batman, and how the adaptations of him healing being ones where he hangs up the cape. And while it's honestly a good read on why a Batman-like character is the way that they are, and that their obsession with fixing that one bad day is more often a hinderance to their healing, that isn't Batman. Or well, that is a Batman without a Robin. Finding someone in a similar situation as him, and then trying desperately to "fix" them, only to find out that he has inadvertently sent them down a similar path to him, is honestly the only way that I could see Mr. "I have a plan to incapacitate every Justice League member because I have to be ready" stop and reconsider his life. Because he didn't mean for Dick to find the Batcave, he didn't mean to let Jason die, he didn't mean to push Tim away, and he didn't mean to not be there for Damian. But he did all that. How could you plan for parenthood.
#batman#superman#dc robin#dc red robin#nightwing#red hood#like the man couldve gotten therapy but then he didnt#and then he saw what no therapy did to his kids#honestly i dont believe any adaptations of batman who hadnt had a robin#because obviously both rich billionaire bruce wayne and terror of the night batman would see themselves as the terrified kid who lost their#parents and needed to save themselves#i will heavily recommend batfams adventures on webtoons#because although the art has its problems#the story understands and is willing to do what most comics wont#let batman be batman#because why the hell wouldnt the most smartest guy in the room realise that he probably would need some therapy#maybe its those tibetan monks#maybe they were actually the therapists the whole time#but they just offered repression and like cool martial arts#maybe instead of learning to block your mind to stop mind reading#batman could just get some therapy#also heavily suggest the harley quinn series#because although it is a heavy flanderisation of batman#it does sit and ask itself#what would batman do if he never went to the therapist#and then decided that to answer that we would need the sanest joker#who is somehow pretty ok actually#like he is still a power craving maniac that loves to push peoples buttons to get what he wants#but hes not insane#hes just a narcissist who needs control in a world that he believes is unfair

You wanna know the hardest part of loving yourself? Keeping yourself accountable. Cause you'll have to find a balance between forgiving yourself and keeping discipline. And it's about forgiving your mistakes without making them again. And it's about letting yourself make mistakes without remorse. Like posting this post.

The future is for me to prepare for, the past if for me to learn from, but right now is all that is true.
There is more i wish to say,
more anger, more anguish, more regrets.
And maybe I'll say then tomorrow.
But right now, I'm on a train,
enjoying the air conditioning.
Right now, I'm going to a workplace
that is much too rush.
Right now, I just wish for support from those who love me and would let me choose a path of my own.
So I'll let all those bad feelings wash away,
and enjoy the path i chose.
Maybe it isn't perfect,
maybe it's too human.
But when tomorrow comes, I wish to see it,
so let me sit in my solace.
For right now, I'm on a marvel,
able to see lands faster than I'd ever think i'd be able to walk,
writing on a magical little glass for no one to see.

Due to being employed at the start of June, and figuring out my sexuality earlier this year, I call for July to be a replacement pride month.

I wonder if Kris's insistence on Ralsie being different from Asriel stems from them seeing Ralsie as a full complete person apart from Asriel (in a way showing how they were brought up in the Dreemur home) or from a need to seperate the real person Asriel from Ralsie (because Kris doesn't like Ralsie all that much (see Chapter 2 tea)) or because Ralsie was Kris' monstersona that they #totallygotover and #totallyhatenow . Because while I, the player, love Ralsie to bits, Kris may not, and though they are growing to like Ralsie, I wonder where the initial dislike stems from, especially since they rate Susie, a person that has been tormenting them for a good while before the game starts, above Ralsie in the aforementioned Chapter 2 tea.
#is this tumblr#shitpost#deltarune#deltarune spoilers#personal headcanon that Ralsie is Kris' horn headband that they used to wear when they were young#and that Kris' wariness of ralsie stems from self-hate that they used to have for their human form but have since repurposed for their#monsterphase but its just two sides of the same coin because you should live and be cringe to be happy#and because someone is trying to control their life and i don't just mean the player

Deltarune chapter 4 spoilers ahead
Apparently people don't like the fight with the Titan? And while I understand that the fight wasn't all too unique or difficult, it's a pretty fun final boss battle to me. Throughout deltarune the fights really haven't been difficult, since having three party members spreading the damage allows them to last much longer than is expected, and Susie and Ralsie's healing makes item usage (like in undertale) much less tedious or dangerous than it has ever been. Not to mention how easy TP is to gain. And most fights are sparable, making it more a battle of attrition until you're able to spare them.
With the titan's heavy defence before its face is revealed, it did feel like any tp actions you take is calcultive, and everytime you missed an attack due to having to use items or heal actually hurt. The fight didn't last as long as it could have to actually make all these cumulate into a very different fight than what it was, but it is a pretty good ending fight for what was a very long chapter.

As boys, we're told that we have to find girlfriends, we're told we don't mature as fast as girls, and we're told we're somehow "better and stronger" than girls. I fear that the rise of men calling themselves incels is due to this indoctrination of the young, in the unrelenting pursuit of masculinity and the failure in said pursuit. Fundamentally, the issue is within the system itself and only men can fix it. The rejection of feeling feelings, the necessity of a "wife", the inherent "rewards" in suffering. Be kind to yourself today, and i do not mean excusing your actions. Ask yourself if you're happy. Forgive yourself for what mistakes you made, and then strive for better tomorrow.

The not-like-other-girls phase is caused by the objectification of women in a misogynistic world, as when you grow up knowing you are a person in a world in which women have object-like roles, it feels completely isolating.

I had a guy tell me to use Chatgpt to leave a voice recording for my cousin's digital wedding card and I cannot really understate the horror of optimising your personal life. Like do I really have to point at Adam Sandler's Click (2006) as a reference point to be in the moment, to be vulnerable, and to face hardships because that's where the memory and connections are found. Cause it's really weird that the metaphoric remote became very very literal.
