My dad hasn’t always been the most appreciated person by me. I used to concentrate on his tendency towards being constantly distracted, his lack of follow through, and his tendency to spend his time with his head in the clouds. No one is perfect. And no one will ever be perfect. I read a quote in Slight Edge this year which I LOVE: most people keep two lists of the person they are in a relationship with. On one list, they write everything that is wrong with that person, and on the other list, they right everything that is awesome about that person. Most people take the list of what is WRONG with that person, and they consult it every day, adding more and more items. The list of what’s awesome about that person? They only bring it out at the eulogy. I realized that there is ALWAYS going to be something wrong. My dad is always going to be doing things that I might not think are smart, or not doing what I think he should be doing. So I finally decided to rip up my long list of negatives, and to start taking time to write out my list of AWESOMENESS about my dad. My dad is the person who taught me how to dream. My dad is the person who introduced me to Rich Dad Poor Dad, and took the time to talk with me about my early ideas. My dad has ALWAYS encouraged me to do what I want. My dad took the time to tie up my skates for hockey, and to come watch my races in high school. My dad taught me how to be independent. My dad taught me that it’s ok to cry. My dad taught me that is was NEVER ok to lie, and that I had to be honest, no matter what. My dad continues to teach me that age is just a number, and that I should never let my dreams die, no matter what. I used to think I had a very tough childhood. But one thing I’ve realized is that just because I think something that’s happening or that has happened is a negative doesn’t necessarily mean that it is. The older I get, the more I’m realizing just how great of a job my Mom and Dad did! Dad, I love you very much. Let’s make those dreams a reality!
