Oftentimes, I just don't have time for an epic (as lovely as they can be). Below is a list of my favorite Marvel fics, which are 5,000 words or less. They have all of the fun, action, and heart you'd expect from the MCU ->

butterfly effect by eternalknight: T, Gwen/Miles

She lives in infinite worlds at a time. She sees carbon copies of every person she meets, endless duplicates with only minor details to differentiate them. She meets two of Miles, three of Hobie, and about a few hundred Peters.

She does not meet herself.

Is it really?

So Rowling had no way of knowing the political climate during the 19 Years Later epilogue, but we do now. So consider this: what kind of world does the Golden Trio live in right now?

Their country is in the middle of Brexit talks, with racism and protectionism at their worst and the magic community isn’t far behind. 

Young Pure Bloods march the streets with torches and capes, shouting “They will not replace us!” They wear Deatheater masks and temporary tattoos (oh it’s not the real thing, they’ll wash it off and be back at the office on Monday).

In the news, the authorities call for a cease of violence and ask people not to fight the young pure bloods. In the streets, people talk about talking to them calmly to fix things. Ron is livid. “You don’t reason with bloody Deatheaters! You throw curses at them!”

Hermione’s work for equality in the magical world gets harder every day. She starts getting death threats in her mail, many howlers that leave her in tears. She keeps going. When people insist that every werewolf is dangerous to society and they should all be banned from country, she tearfully remembers Lupin giving his life to protect them all, she remembers Dobby with a knife in his heart and Hagrid with his half giant blood and his giant heart. She keeps fighting. 

As much as he hates it —and he hates it a lot— Harry becomes a vocal public figure again, constantly condemning blood purists and calling for action against them. His office calls horrified after the first interview, telling him he can’t be calling for violence against this people who are only protesting. “They are Deatheaters and this is how we deal with them,” he snarls back. “Have you forgotten Voldemort?” On the other side of the line, he can feel them flinch. 

No one who fought the war has forgotten it, but so many others seem to, it pains Harry. It’s been barely twenty years since he saw children die in the grounds of Hogwarts, killed by grown angry men who believed themselves superior. It’s been barely twenty years since Tom Riddle’s death body laid on the ground and he thought they could finally have peace. 

The trio sends their kids on the Hogwarts Express and they can’t help but remember their experiences there in a time much like this. They never thought their own children would have to suffer as they did, they pray they won’t have to. 

Harry touches his lighting scar and reminds himself it hasn’t hurt again for years. All is well. A quiet voice inside his head wonders bitterly: “Is it, really?”

I read Five Year Reunion to be Held in the Dairy Aisle by frogy this week. It is a Saved! fanfic set about five years after the movie. In this story, Mary, Roland, and Cassandra all find themselves back in their hometown for the holidays. By chance, they end up at the grocery store at the same time, leading to a brief, awkward reunion before they each return to their current lives to celebrate Christmas with their families.

What I like about this fic a lot is it feels very real. Though the three were close by the end of the film, the years since high school — and Mary's journey as a young mother — have caused them to drift apart. Each is now navigating their own path, with new relationships, personal struggles, and a sense of life moving forward.

One of my favorite details was the way the story subtly explored the idea of a high school reunion. In the beginning, none of them would choose to attend one. But after their brief encounter in the grocery store, they reconsider, ultimately deciding to go to their school's ten-year reunion. Their brief interaction reminds them that, despite the difficulties of high school, not all of it was bad, just maybe, it would be nice to catch up for a night.

Zuko doodle! On that ATLA bandwagon with the new Netflix show out now so I felt nostalgic and drew everyone’s fire nation boyfriend 😆 I actually think the Netflix show is pretty decent! I think the cast is doing a very good job with the characters so far and I saw a 2nd and 3rd season is confirmed so I’m looking forward to seeing more.

A rare type of HP AU fanfic I like is stories where a young Severus Snape is adopted/taken in by another character. There's something very interesting about how that can entirely alter the course of his life and the story of Harry Potter too. Below I have a few I have enjoyed listed->

The Unwanted Boy From Spinner's End by SevSnapelivesforever: T, no pairings

Severus Snape’s existence is a mistake. His mother hints at it often enough with her regretful, drawn-out sighs, while his father prefers to get the message across with a good strapping and a lecture on his worthlessness. Needless to say, the twelve-year-old is not particularly inclined to trust adults, no matter how concerned or caring they claim to be.

His life changes abruptly, however, one late evening in September when an illicit brewing session results in a forced trip to the Hogwarts infirmary. Not only is the truth about Severus' home life discovered, but an investigation reveals that shortly prior to his mother’s unexpected death, a single piece of parchment was deposited into her Gringotts vault—a Last Will and Testament in which Eileen Snape née Prince grants guardianship of her son to none other than Albus Dumbledore himself.

Eight-year-old Severus Snape wakes up alone at home only to be later dumped in another house. There, he must put up with an annoying toddler, a creepy cat and two adults that cannot be trusted.

The place is Godric's Hollow and the year, 1981 —except for the fact that Severus thinks it is 1968.

Rewriting History by Tiro: M, Abraxas/Harry, Lucius/Narcissa

Whenever Harry does something drastic, he always ends up in a strange situation.

In this world, Eileen Snape told the truth to the muggle man standing on her doorstep asking if her home was safe. “No, it isn’t.” She took a breath, “I will not be leaving, but you may keep Severus away if you wish.”

Angst fics can help people come to terms with their own grief, begin healing, or give people that good cry that they need.

Smut fics can help people affirm and accept their sexuality. It can help them explore their sexuality in a safe way. They can also just be fun, and having fun is a drastically undervalued way to improve your mental health.

Dark fics can help people face their fears or process their trauma. It can make them feel safer and more secure. It can help them find their courage.

Fluff fics can give people rest and respite and comfort. It can give them hope that soft places exist and that maybe there is one out there for them. It can bring up their mood, which, if they have depression, can be a life saver.

And every fic people write makes someone feel less alone.

Point being, just because a particular thing doesn’t serve you, doesn’t mean it lacks value.

This is not to say that we have to consume all fic uncritically. Of course not. It is just to say that entire “genres” aren’t trash or lacking value just because they don’t serve you.
