The Rani:

-I absolutely love her. She has one goal and I love that. It would seem one note but no, they really use the idea that science is her entire life without making her boring.

-She’s pretty ace to me but the Mel ship is definitely growing more and more on me

-I love her and the Master’s “friendship”. They hate each other so much yet force themselves to tolerate each other. I really loved the one on one interactions we got in Reality War between her and the Doctor Who. Six and Seven were more jumpy and stubborn so seeing a calmer Doctor interact instead was so nice.

-Idk if this is an unpopular opinion but it’s less popular than I’d like it to be. Archie was absolutely the perfect casting for this role and she 100% killed it!

-I wish we got more interaction between her and Mel. I’ve said it before but they’re two sides of the same coin and they should have played into that a little more.

Five:

-I like him! One of my favorite Doctors but not my absolute favorite but I think but that’s like asking someone what their favorite type of cake is.

-We love some good Turlough and Five. Though, the Master is so fruity with him, like?

-I just love his fatherly dynamic. It’s so clear he has care for everyone in his Tardis even though he may lose patience more with one person than another or not agree. I have no true platonic OTP other than his Tardis team.

-He deserves so much more feral fanart and general content. Yes, he’s the “nice” Doctor but he has so many breaking points where you can tell he’s bottling something up.

-Well, I guess I said it already, him being more feral. Honestly, they didn’t do him too dirty and I think his story was handled well enough. Maybe a little more of him and Peri but that’s about it.

Mel and the Rani are two sides of the same coin (obvious but let me continue)

It wasn’t exactly as obvious in the 80s, especially with the Rani having to pretend to be her (the complete opposite of her personality) but the deeper you look, the more you realize they’re two size of the same coin. Now, their different aesthetics but similar, very extra 80s outfits is clearly purposeful. However, what we know about Mel is how intelligent she is.

The point is that they’re both so science oriented but have such different ideals about what the morality of that science should be. The Rani has little to no care for anyone else, especially those who are the subject of her experiments or in the way of them. Meanwhile, as said in The Reality War, Mel sees her as ruthless. She cares enough that UNIT thought she was with hiring with her skills.

Here’s an example of that comparison in the 80s version of them:

But what I didn’t realize until I was drawing a piece was that they did the same thing. Here’s them side by side in a 2025 image to show you:

They’re essentially wearing the same coat in different fonts. The asymmetrical zipper, the secondary zipper, collar.

Feel free to skip my analysis:

Obviously it was the 80s, so it was hard to make the distinction but it’s so interesting seeing the differences that show who they are. The Rani has a very nice coat and her hair is intricate and she wears jewelry and makeup. She presents herself as she wants to be seen, someone who’s respected and powerful. Meanwhile, Mel’s hair is loose and permed after being freed from the wish world and she wears casual pants and her makeup is light except for her eyes. She presents herself as more free spirited and even a little messy you could say. The point is that she doesn’t care, she’s just her and doesn’t need to be “presentable”.

TLDR; The Rani presents herself as respectable and neat while Mel presents herself as more care free

It’s just crazy that we get to see this comparison again. Seriously, props to the costume department. This is so well thought out and so representative just with some jackets.

there’s no source for this information I stumbled across on tvtropes, but it sounds legit to me—Anthony Ainley himself was very keen on birds—and it just makes the “You killed that bird!” deleted scene even funnier. I want this to be a thing now. the Master likes birds. they’ll wipe out whole solar systems but they refuse to harm one single bird.
