all the quiet nights you bear

Carlos still feels his heartbeat in his ears, and tries to focus on other things: the soft hum of the engine shutting off and the way it echoes in the large parking garage, the song-and-dance that erupts from their footsteps, sluggish and squelching against the cement from the wetness that seeped into the soles of their shoes. TK holds onto his arm as they walk, necessary for stability, and Carlos is grateful for it; for him, and the closeness. He smooths his own thumb over TK’s hip as they head for the elevator, and he’s sure they must be a sight: half out of their uniforms, Carlos carrying a bag with extra-strength Tylenol and some Gatorades in it along with both of their work backpacks, and TK hanging off him with a bandage on his head that’ll be changing once they get into the loft.

Homesick Christmas (Tarlos Secret Santa)

Summary: Traveling was not Carlos's favorite thing. He much preferred being home. Being with family. But, with Christmas being a bit different this year, TK has suggested a Christmas getaway for the two of them, complete with snow and a Christmas market in the mountains. It should be perfect. Even if it isn't what he really would want for himself. But, maybe, just maybe, TK can make it even better, and prove that home is more than just a place.

Merry Christmas @bonheur-cafe! I hope you enjoy my take on your prompts. I apologize for not reaching out during the challenge to ask for more info. Time got away from me a bit this year. This is honestly the first thing I've written in six months. Much like Carlos, I'm a bit more aware of grief this year after losing someone this summer.

I tried to do a mix of two of the prompts from @tarlos-santa: Scenario 1: Carlos and TK are traveling for the holidays; Carlos' disdain for travel because he gets homesick comes to light. Scenario 2: A warm, comforting meal eaten on a miserably cold day. Some cuddling is also in order. Special thanks to @lire-casander and @marjansmarwani for putting up with me writing for the first time in months and helping, as always.

He sat on the couch looking through his laptop. Clicking through tabs left and right. He had to make things perfect this year. He had to. He just wanted to find the perfect Christmas getaway. They needed it. Now more than ever.  Neither of them would say it had been the best year, even with one of the best days of their life happening with the wedding. But, the rest of it… They had great hopes for it when it started. After all, they were still riding the high of a new engagement. Excited and ready to take on all that would come. Sure, they’d had rough years. Between shootings, dunks under ice, losing the firehouse…they didn’t think things could get much worse.  Even after everything with Gwyn.   But, they were wrong. They couldn’t have predicted what they faced over the past year. They didn’t expect kidnappings (again…) or Owen to deal with the FBI (maybe that should have been more obvious…) or to lose Gabriel (that one seemed to sting the most…). His eyes left his laptop and stared across the room at the bookcase. The picture from the rehearsal dinner sat proudly in the middle, for everyone to see. For them to remember the last night they had with the man. It had been perfect. He smiled sadly to himself and sighed once more. He tapped out a nervous rhythm on his keyboard and gazed back down at the tabs in front of him. Vacation spots stared back at him. Everything from resorts boasting great Christmas vibes in various states to beach houses that would offer some privacy to ski lodges that would offer a snowy holiday.  Continued on AO3

He looks at his chewed-up cuticles and imagines Henry there under his fingers, speaking into only inches of distance. He imagines the way Henry’s face would look in the bluish-gray dark. Maybe he would have a faint shadow of stubble on his jaw, waiting for a morning shave, or maybe the circles under his eyes would wash out in the low light.
