Its a big pine. I totally got this. Done it dozens of times." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Except by then - the entire painting had become about the tree. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I look at things like this through a saying I love - ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ "How do you eat an elephant?" ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ One. Bite. At. A. Time. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I did a practice run on the tree (which actually came out so well that we made T-shirts of it for the release of Art for Life at www.nelsonmakesart.com). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The practice run went great... So I started on the real tree with just a bit. Just the top. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Then I tackled a few more branches and some of the trunk. Then. A little more. Then a little more. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Then it was just done. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Its amazing the weight we give things without meaning to. Some pink over there."⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Personally, I dont know if i have, but in this case I sure did.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When I finished the glow of the sunset on the horizon, the right side of the art felt flat. and so I started building up layers up on layers of magenta, red, pink, and purple oil paint.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Youd be surprised how long it takes glazes to add up. But that little glow over on the right? 3 of 9 | from the album art for Ryan Farish's newest release - "Art for Life" - 36"x36" oils on canvas using brushes and palette knife - follow us @nelsonmakesart for more! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What kind of music gets you creatively inspired? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The rocks and mountains of the Sierra Nevada's inspired me in creating this album art for "Art for Life." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Two years ago I hiked up from the Yosemite Valley floor to the very top of Half Dome. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The rocks, the paths, the trees...coming around any bend and seeing the expanse of Yosemite...you never knew what amazing thing was coming next. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ That's kind of what it was like painting this album art for Ryan. Every time we'd finish a coat it brought entirely new life to the piece, and surprised us. Because it's SO GOOD. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I've lived in California for nearly 10 years now, and if the western USA has shown me anything, its the grandeur of nature. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Scenes like the one I painted aren't really all that unusual out west. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Pine trees that nearly touch the sky. Rolling hills that fade into the sunset. We are at @oztrailsnwa showing some of our newest art and we just launched another line of glassware. But...it's even bigger and better. Today, @ryanfarish 's newest album, Art for Life, releases world-wide. This has been one of those dream projects for me. It's rare that you not only get to do the thing you love to do (for me, make art - although lying on a beach with margaritas comes a close second), but I got to work not just on the album art for a music artist who's sounds are totally my jam, but work collaboratively with him! Its an amazing thing to make art that people like. Its an even more amazing thing to create something with someone else in a selfless process where the final product isn't about ego, but about creating absolutely the right art for the right feelings. I used to work in theatre, and I have a hard time thinking of more than a few of times I walked away from a "collaborative" experience feeling proud and honored. This one - solid win.
