Hi dollies! This post breaks down everything in the world of perfume! Scent families, layering, types of perfume, and how to find a scent that's yours~

What is a scent family?

A scent family is like a category or genre of fragrance. Just like movies have genres (romance, horror, comedy), perfumes are grouped based on their dominant smell and ingredients. Think of it like this:

Every perfume is made of “notes” (ingredients that create a scent). When a perfume is mostly made up of certain types of notes, it fits into a scent family! These families help you understand what a perfume smells like without sniffing it!

Now that we know about scent families, let's learn about the notes that make them up!

In music, a note is one sound. In perfume, a note is one smell — like vanilla, rose, or lemon. Perfumes are made by layering many of these notes together into a scent “chord.”

If someone says a perfume has jasmine notes, it means you’ll smell a clear, recognizable jasmine scent as part of the fragrance!

Scent notes are usually grouped by how they behave over time, aka how quickly they fade after spraying. When you spray a perfume, over time it'll fade scents through 3 categories:

˚⊱Top Notes (First Impressions)

Usually lasts: 5–15 minutes. These are the first scents you smell when you spray a perfume. They’re usually:

Light and fresh

Meant to grab your attention

Evaporate quickly

˚⊱ Common top notes:

🍋 Citrus (lemon, grapefruit)

🌿 Herbs (mint, basil)

🍉 Fruits (pear, apple)

˚⊱Middle Notes (Heart Notes)

Usually lasts: 20–60 minutes. This is the “heart” of the perfume. It appears after the top fades and gives the perfume character.

Common middle notes:

🌸 Flowers (rose, peony, jasmine)

🍑 Fruits (peach, plum)

🌿 Herbs (green tea, lavender)

˚⊱Base Notes (The Dry Down)

Lasts: 4+ hours. This is the “ending” of the perfume. It sticks with your skin and leaves a long-lasting impression!

˚⊱Common base notes:

🪵 Wood (sandalwood, cedar)

🫐 Sweet (vanilla, blackberry)

☁️ Musk (amber, cashmere wool)

It's important to know what notes you like so you can find them in your perfect perfume!

*ੈ✩Perfume Types‧₊˚*

There are 5 main types of perfume, namely parfum, eau de parfum, eau de toilette, eau de cologne, and eau de fraiche.

Parfum : 20-40% scent concentration. Can last 12+ hours (the longest lasting type!) It's the most expensive and concentrated type of perfume, that has a very strong smell.

Eau de Parfum : 15-20% scent concentration. Can last 8-10 hours. The most common type of perfume you can find in high end stores!

Eau de Toilette : 5-15% scent concentration. Can last 4-8 hours. Usually has a softer or lighter scent. Literally translates to "toilet water".

Eau de Cologne : 2-4% scent concentration. Can last 2-4 hours. Usually used for casual wear, for people who still want to stand out, but not command attention.

Eau de Fraiche : 1-3% scent concentration. Can last ~2 hours. Light and refreshing scent that is often reapplied throughout the day after using a stronger type of perfume.

The higher concentration of scent oil in the perfume, the higher the price will be! Keep this in mind when perfume shopping because it can get expensive...

Layering means wearing two or more scents together so they blend into a unique fragrance on your skin. Think of it like mixing paint to create a unique shade. Layering allows you to really create a unique scent that's personal to you!

You can layer perfume sprays, body mists, lotions, oils, body washes, or even hair mists!

Start with a scented base

Apply a lotion or oil with a subtle scent (like vanilla, coconut, rose, etc.)

This helps lock in moisture and makes the scent last!

Apply your “main” perfume

Spray your main fragrance on your pulse points (wrists, neck, ect.)

Top it off with a light mist or accent

Add a lighter perfume, hair mist, or body spray to bring out certain notes! For example: add a citrus spray to brighten a floral perfume, or add vanilla body mist to warm up a fresh scent!

Mix 2-3 scents max! Too many different scents can get muddy!

Think about what kind of scent you want to wear. What do you want people to think when they walk by? What kind of scents match your personality? What kinda vibe do you want to have? These are all things to consider when finding your signature scent!

How To Smell Like Heaven ɞ˚‧｡⋆ 💐

Hi dollies!! This post is a guide on how to smell amazing! Enjoy~!

*ੈ✩Showering‧₊˚*

Use warm water! Not too hot that you burn up!

Washing your hair! Use a shampoo and conditioner with similar scents, that way they layer together in harmony! Shampoo your hair and wash out all the soap before putting the conditioner in the ends of your hair.

Wash your face using a cleansing soap that works for you! If you have dry skin, use something moisturizing, If you have oily skin, use something oil-absorbing!

Wash the conditioner out of your hair! It works best if you leave it in for a bit, so I usually wash my face while the conditioner really absorbs into my hair!

Wash your body with bar soap. Make sure you use a washcloth or loofa to get super clean! Pay extra attention to your underarms and sanitary areas!!

Exfoliate! It's good to do twice a week to remove dead skin cells and make your skin baby smooth~

Shave with a multil blade razor! I've tried both single and multi blades, and multi blade razors are faster and have smoother results (in my experience anyways~)

Use a moisturizing body wash all over! It helps hydrate your skin and sooth it after exfoliating and shaving. Use a loofa or washcloth to help work it into your skin better.

If your showering in the morning, run some cold water to rinse both your body and your hair with after your all clean. It helps wake you up + it's good for your body and hair!

Shut the water off and dry yourself while your still in the shower! Dry your hair in a downwards motion to reduce tangles, and pat your body dry instead of rubbing it!

*ੈ✩After Shower‧₊˚*

Apply deodorant to completely dry underarms. Allow the deodorant to completely dry, that way it doesn't stick to your clothing.

Gently rub a body lotion into your arms and legs while they're still slightly damp. It helps you stay moisturized and glowing!

Body oil! Gently rub it into your skin after you use lotion, that way it really locks in the moisture and keeps you hydrated!

Spray a body mist over yourself, the lotion and body oil will help lock the scent in and make it stay all day long!

Finally, spray on your favorite perfume! If you really want an all day scent, use a solid perfume!

*ੈ✩Extra Tips‧₊˚*

Make sure you match your scents! If you use strawberry scented shampoo and perfume, make sure the rest of your products have scents that pair well with strawberry (for example: vanilla)! This will make sure you smell extra amazing!

Make sure you carry an extra perfume or body mist with you in your purse or bag! That way, you can apply a bit if you feel like your scent is starting to fade, and you stay fresh!

Spray a lil extra body mist or perfume in your hair! That way when you flip it, it smells amazing!

Try to have a signature smell! Use products that are uniquely you, that way people awalys associate you with smelling amazing!
