Running Up That Hill being released 1 month and 1 day after Billy died and Max deciding that was her favorite song, and she had to have it on cassette, and she had to listen to it all the time and she had to use that song to drown everything out—

She was imagining over and over what could have been and punishing herself.

And even though it was painful, the song brought her comfort.

I know people say Max had a lot of survivor's guilt and wanted to literally die in Billy's place, but Kate Bush also said the song was about men and women not understanding each other. Max had a deep desire to connect with Billy and have a sibling relationship with him. That mattered so much to her.
