A Writer’s Guide to Viewpoints

Most of us know that there are three major viewpoints from which stories are told:

First Person – “I tell my own story with the pronoun ‘I’ because I’m just so damn awesome.”

Second Person – “You are a character in this story, and you can’t do anything about it.  If it makes you uncomfortable, tough shit.”

Third Person – “He muttered himself and pulled the blankets over his head, wishing this asshole would stop narrating his life.”

Those are the three viewpoints, and that’s all there is to it.  Just pick your favorite, and you’re ready to go.  Right?

Well.  Not exactly.  

You see, my fellow scribblers, there are actually multiple sub categories of each viewpoint – beyond even the “Third Person Omniscient” or “Third Person Subjective.”

To be specific:

First Person:

First Person Informant

First Person Reminiscent

Unreliable

Second Person:

Reader as Character

I Substitute

Third Person:

Objective 

Limited 

Multiple Selective Omniscience 

Omniscient

This might seem overwhelming, but fear not!  Each perspective is fairly easy to break down, and ultimately, apply to your own work and understanding of literature.  This post will elucidate each.

So let’s take charge of our narratives and delve in, like the active protagonists we are.

Christmas Playlist!

Instead of doing my NaNo stuff, I decided to make a Christmas playlist instead of bumming off my mom’s this year lol. I’m 22 and this is the first one I’ve decided to do and I’m totally gonna use it as inspo when I write the Beyond the Vault Holiday Specials. (It’s past Halloween, so you can probably just expect Thanksgiving and/or Christmas.)

Here’s the first draft of the story’s summary:

Alma Lancaster, a Vault 75 survivor who’s taken up the alias Lana Hale, is a mercenary with bad alcohol habits and even worse socialization skills. She’s got a mouth on her, and she refuses to get involved with anyone beyond causal flings - until she gets stuck taking care of an Enclave amnesiac whose aloof charm gets under her skin like nothing else has before.

It’s still in the outlining phase, but Lana’s a character that I can’t wait to write. Elliot (the amnesiac mentioned) is a total sweetheart too, and I love him. Thanks to RebelOnAMission from the Fallout Amino for letting me use Elliot!

Two centuries passed. A loving husband dead. Her only son lost. Amelia, the sole survivor of Vault 111, wakes up to her Massachusetts turned wasteland Commonwealth.

Her goal was to find her baby, and she would go through all opportunities laid down to her to make that happen. Even hiring MacCready, a mercenary with a job to keep her safe. His goal, on the other hand, was to make caps.

Two people with different objectives and principles. Would they handle whatever kind of relationship spur between them without straying from their goals?

Starring: Amelia Langley Williams (my first OC F!SS) and Robert Joseph MacCready plus other FO4 companions and NPCs

The Glowing Sea is huge, vast, and unlike anything she’s ever seen before. Though, in reality, she really didn’t know what to expect, considering the lack of seas in Boston.

The sound of her breath and her heart beating are the only two things she can hear. Anxiously, she glances back at MacCready, just to make sure he hasn’t been picked off by some radioactive creature. He gives a comforting wave and a small smile, though it’s hard to see his face through the glare of his helmet. Still, the sentiment is nice. She thought that she’d have to make the trip out here all by herself – and she almost did. Thankfully, MacCready had been a lot more forgiving than she had pinned him to be. And while she loved being right, his forgiveness and acceptance of all the shit she had pulled had been a blessing.

Feeling a bit better, Ilya turns forward again and hefts her missile launcher higher up on her shoulder. Anything that gets in her way is getting a one way ticket to hell – that is, if they’re not there already.

WriteHive 2020

Fun fact: there’s an online writing event that’s doing a fanfiction panel next year - and I’m one of the panelists!

WriteHive is a 100% online event that takes place over the course of 2 days: April 18th, and April 19th. The fanfic panel is the only event I’m part of, but there’s a lot more being planned and y’all, there are a ton of cool workshops and other panels happening.

I’m not sure how much we’re allowed to divulge at this point (I’m assuming this is okay, since the site says they’re keeping the identities secret so we can make our own announcements) so I’m going to stop here, but keep an eye out for it! It’s gonna be a blast!

For anyone who’s curious, this is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. They come in blenheim, which is this, and then tricolor, red, and black & tan.

They’re super sweet cuddle bugs and they’re the best dogs ever and I love them so much.
