The Lamplight-Letters: Chapter Twenty-three

There’s something peculiar about visiting a friend’s house for the very first time. You’ve known the one, but not the other, until you’re invited over and the two are slapped together like a sandwich. The friend influences your opinion of the house, the house influences your opinion of the friend, and you end up seeing both in a different light than you would have otherwise.

As I stepped out of the car and stood squinting up at Dove Manor, my mind was already busy sticking Clive inside and shuffling around everything I knew about him, as much as I wished it wouldn’t. Of course, I had already known Clive’s family was well-off, but the house before me was quite a bit beyond what I had expected. How to reconcile the shrewd, tireless boy I knew, who seemed to live by wits and close-scrapes alone, with something so imposing, so venerable and grand?

If I was honest, the place was more than that–it was intimidating. Perhaps that was why it reminded me so of Dreycott .  .  .

Desmond fics...

As promised, here are some fics starring Desmond or Descole. I already did a previous list for Desmond romance fics and Raymond fics, so these will mainly be other areas...

Storm's End by Minmei - ‘Sycamore begins to pick up the pieces of his life. Set after PL3, spoilers for PL1 through PL6 and PLvsAA. Warning: Headcanon running rampant! (Part 2 uploaded. Complete.)’ ...Was anyone else bummed out when Desmond flew off in the Bostonius at the end of AL without having any closure with his brother? Was anyone annoyed at how he didn’t really face any consequences for all the crimes he committed in his past? (Yeah, he helped save the world, but that doesn’t excuse ‘kidnapping, blackmail, destruction of property’...)  Did anyone want to see Desmond confront Descole? Won’t say much due to spoilers, but there’s a scene during the second chapter...  and whoa. Just whoa. Also, Phoenix and Maya are here to defend Desmond. Also, also Flora meets her uncle.

An Unexpected Visitor by authoresslynnea - ‘The Laytons recieve an uninvited guest right before Christmas- helping Flora discover there are things her father has been hiding from her.’ Once again, Flora meets Desmond but, understandably, things don’t go smoothly. Flora reminds Desmond of someone... Each chapter is quite short and easy to read. 

Demon Lord Satan has written several Desmond fics, including: What Now?, Dress-Up, Delirium, Holiday and Or Else

Selfish Motives by Lake of Rage draws fantastic insights and parallels between Desmond, Hershel and Bronev. Wow, it actually feels like Des could be related to Bronev now

Professor Sycamore and the golden book by nayru9572 - A classic Layton adventure starring Desmond Sycamore. Sadly, even with two promising chapters, it hasn’t been updated since 2015... Could that change with a few reviews???

Descole and Commissere by PuzzleBot - More brotherly fluff. Hershel tells Theodore a story.

Tentative Hatred by mutedneon - ‘While taking up residence at Reunion Inn, things can be a bit rocky between Randall and Descole - who, reluctantly, have to stay in the same suite.’ From Randall’s point of view, of course. 

Descolbabe’s series of Desmond fics as he deals with Targent: Forged in Fire, Extinguished and Fanning the Flames. All three fics are complete and the author even noted that the next instalment of the series was on its way. Unfortunately, there’s been nothing more... I believe the writer has a Tumblr, but the link on their profile is broken. They did mention the universe name, Tophatwriters, but I haven’t been able to find anything...

Bonds Left Unbroken by The Mocking J -  ‘Glimpses into what life could have been like had they gone together. (AU)’ I won’t spoil the AU idea, but let’s just say Desmond and Hershel’s brotherly bond is truly tested here over a long period of time.  

Frater Meus by ahumblescientist - ‘Jean Descole refuses to make amends and reconcile. Desmond Sycamore is scared of who he is. Raymond is sick of watching him destroy himself, and sets up a way for his master to patch up his life.’ (You should read the tags beforehand, but don’t let that put you off a great fic.)

The Trouble With Akbadain - ‘AU. Set after Miracle Mask. Descole has finally found the Infinite Chamber of Akbadain. However, Reinel has other plans. Plans that include a certain elaborate scientist...’ Presumably written before the English release of Azran Legacy, as it contains AU elements and refers to Bronev’s last name as ‘Reinel’. Still a very investing AU and I’m sad it’s incomplete.

Watchful Eye by @samcybercat - ‘Descole had an easy ride fooling everyone in Misthallery. Everyone except for Brenda.’ Descole at his worse, but still very in-character and very suspenseful. He even shows some grudging respect for Brenda, which is interesting..

‘Luke inadvertently stumbles across a secret of Flora's in the attic...’

It’s been a while since I’ve seen a cute Flora & Luke fic. Did I say cute...? I meant precious. The pair of them are just precious together. The games don’t give us much indication of Layton, Luke and Flora’s lives at home, but this scenario really feels like something that could have happened - something we should have seen more of in canon. Flora doesn’t have to magically become an Action Girl. Luke doesn’t need to rescue her. They’re just two kids bonding in a secret den in the attic. That’s it, but that’s all we need.

I was at the airport for 8 hours overnight with no sleep or food, so I asked you guys to distract me with some writing prompts. All of them can be found below!

Just be aware that these are short drabbles written while I was very tired. I’ve edited them a little, but they’re really just snapshots of the characters’ lives and not meant to feel complete.

I feel bad for not reblogging this writer’s work sooner… so, I’m just going to direct you to their complete profile page here on AO3, where you’ll find the chapters for Puzzle 3301, featuring an older Clive and his adorable daughter, Justine. 

I’ll admit, I haven’t actually read the complete story myself, but I really should because those chapters are long, usually exceeding 8000+ words. And yet, no chapters after the first have gotten any kudos or comments. (I don’t know if it’s same case for any chapters that may have been posted on Tumblr…) Imagine how much time, effort, planning and detail must have gone in to writing each chapter.

Could we turn things around and give this fic some attention?

(Also, the fanart for this story is precious, and Clive wearing glasses is… well, he  looks even more handsome.)
