They’re the cutessssst. I’m back to being obsessed with these two and Party Down after so many years. Everyone needs to go watch this criminally underrated workplace comedy from 2009 so we can get more episodes of it please!
I don’t care that my job’s stupid, ‘cause, you know, I don’t have any responsibilities and I get to come here and goof off with you all the time. It’s cool. Yeah, like, I feel okay with everything for the first time in a really long time and, I don’t know, I feel like a lot of that has to do with you.

The best recent romcom tv shows
There may not be many romcom movies these days, but the last few years has been pretty great for tv romances! These are my favorite romantic comedy-dramas from recent years:
10. This Way Up - not an overt romance but has some moments and is an amazing show

9. Lovesick / Scrotal Recall - so so good and relatable

8. New Girl - hilarious, this cast is too good together
7. Erkenci Kuş - turkish dizi that drove me absolutely insane in 2019

6. Normal People - devastating but incedibly beautiful

5. Bridgerton - ...you know it, you love it

4. Upload - scifi show that is clever and heartfelt

3. Starstruck - funny, well written, and such a cute pairing

2. Crash Landing on You - kdrama with the best romance, drama, laughs

1. Fleabag - i’ll never get over the Hot Priest & Fleabag romance. this show is top notch!!

Starstruck chemistry
This tv show is soo good! I’m referring of course to the 2021 BBC / HBO tv series, not the DCOM movie of the same name. It’s written by and starring Rose Matafeo who is crazy funny and charismatic as this character. She plays the seriously likable Jessie, who falls for a famous film star, Tom. I think a lot of women can relate to this character and her struggles, and I love how hilarious and light the plot is, despite being pretty realistic in some ways.
What really makes this show is the amazing chemistry between the leads and the way the romance plays out between Jessie and Tom, played by Nikesh Patel. The accidentally-falling-for-a-celebrity trope is so good and it’s one I’ll never get sick of, but the way it’s written here is just so original and entertaining. I love this show and watched it in one sitting, so I really can’t wait for the next season!

Post Grad (2009)
If you are a person who uses the internet to find movies to watch, it can be tricky finding enjoyable romcoms, given that they all have terrible ratings on imdb and everywhere on the internet. But you will find, in fact, these ratings are mostly arbitrary negative reviews, from disapproving movie fans who most likely should not have been watching a romantic comedy in the first place.
Post Grad is a movie directed by Vicky Jenson (she directed Shrek and Shark Tale, though this movie isn’t quite like those) and written by Kelly Fremon Craig (she wrote/directed The Edge of Seventeen).
Post Grad is about a college graduate, Alexis Bledel, who has to move back home after she can’t find a job. Her family is charming and a little weird, she has a best friend who is a very cute boy she isn’t dating, and overall this movie is funny, heartwarming, and relatable.

This is the trailer for Post Grad:

Why Destination Wedding (2018) is an awesome movie
I want to write about this fantastic Winona Ryder / Keanu Reeves film that I absolutely loved. It that came out for a brief moment this past summer, but I don’t think many people got to see it.
Destination Wedding is a very funny movie with nearly nonstop dialogue and witty banter between the two leads, played by Winona and Keanu, who play somewhat neurotic, intelligent, nihilistic loners who are attending their mutual aquaintance’s wedding. They are entertaining characters, both a bit dark and behaving pretty realistically for two people on their own, drudging through an awkward wedding they don’t want to be at, while deep down, being desperate for love to come into their life.
youtube
What I liked so much about this film was how incredibly focused and to the point it is. They are the only characters in the entire movie, they are wildly silly and enjoyable to listen to, and most of all, they are honest in their actions and words with each other. There are some touching moments between the two and it felt very real, felt realistically how two weirdos like them would unsuspectingly fall in love with each other and learn from one another.
It’s wonderful watching Winona and Keanu in comedic roles and it seems to come so naturally for them. During this movie I felt like I was watching their old 90s flicks at times and it was great. They should both do more comedies in the future.
This movie says so much about companionship, heartbreak, attraction and loneliness, and does so in a hilarious way with two likeable characters, who you root for, despite all their flaws. It was so very refreshing to watch two people talk onscreen about real troubles, fears and desires, and in such a nihilistic, pessimistic way. What’s more, I felt their relationship with each other was believable. They had great chemistry and their interest, and also disgust with each other, made sense in the movie and really felt like two people that would be butting heads with one another.
Destination Wedding is thought-provoking and it’s good fun!

Netflix romcoms
I’m not here to plug Netflix (like they need it) but I do appreciate that they’re making so many romantic comedies lately. Most of these movies came out in 2018 and there are some enjoyable flicks here:

The Kissing Booth ★★★
This movie is an extremely fun high school romp. It may not be perfect, but as a romantic comedy it does its job very well. The characters are entertaining, especially Joey King as the lead, who is such a likeable, sassy character.
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before ★★
Another fun high school romcom flick that is very enjoyable to watch. The leads have great chemistry and there’s some quirky minor characters. It reminded me of ‘Love Simon’ in the way that it had an old-school-esq high school comedy movie feel.
Set It Up ★★
This movie is enjoyable, though it’s a pretty tame romcom, in that the characters are fairly realistic, mellow people who are just so overworked. I liked watching it, but wished for some more drama or action or anything to spice it up.
When We First Met ★★
This is a cool and weird movie because it makes you aware of how much you get hung up on someone and need to let it go. I had no idea where this movie was going at any point, so that was interesting, especially for a romantic comedy. It has a unique premise and it’s thought provoking, makes you reflect on your relationships and the kinds of people you fall for.
The Incredible Jessica James ★★
I liked this movie because Jessica Williams is highly charismatic and great to watch, but I didn’t really see her with Chris O’Dowd, the male romantic lead, which made it hard to root for them. It has some relatable and funny moments, though.
Also...
Ibiza: Love Drunk ★
Happy Anniversary
Alex Strangelove
The Fundamentals of Caring (roadtrip movie)
Tramps (crime-romance heist-ish movie) ★★
Ali’s Wedding
Like Father

Romcoms that pass the Bechdel Test
Everyone says romantic comedies are for women and yet, so few of them include women doing anything other than obsessing over a man.
Naturally, feminist romcoms are my favourites, so here are some of the best flicks that have at least 2 women characters who have names and talk to each other about something other than a man.

Bachelorette (2012) - some ladies losing their shit in the most entertaining ways at a friend’s wedding. with raunchy and thoughtful characters.
How to Deal (2003)- teen love with angst but it’s pretty light-hearted angst.
Obvious Child (2014) - more of a dram-rom-com, but it’s a great, funny and engaging film.
Miss Congeniality (2000) - there’s a reason this movie never gets old - and that’s because it rocks. hilarious ladies and good action.
Band Aid (2017) - a fighting couple forms a band and everyone in this movie is hilarious and real.
Bridesmaids (2011) - truly i could watch Melissa McCarthy in this movie til the end of time.
Ten Things I Hate About You (1999) - a high-school comedy flick, but has some sweet romance.
Mean Girls (2004) - it’s all about the gals.
How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days (2003) - total hilarity. there may be some not-so-feminist things about this movie, but at the same time it’s satisfying watching a woman sabotage her relationship with a guy, in order to move ahead in her career.
Spy (2015) - an action packed hilarious comedy film starring a pretty down-to-earth lady, leading an action movie.
Sleeping with other people (2015) - this movie rules and also feels pretty feminist overall, so I’m willing to accept that there’s actually only brief moments that pass the Bechdel Test.
Slow Learners (2015) - two friends decide to be cooler people and less nerdy versions of themselves and they fall in love. this movie is pretty hilarious and insightful.
#how are there so few good romcoms that pass the bechdel test#feminism#romcom#movies#films#cinema#romantic#comedy#bechdel test#feminist

Wonder Woman love
Since this is a blog about romcoms I figure I’ll write something about the romance and comedy in this excellent movie.
The chemistry between these two is wonderful and makes for a really fun watch. The lighthearted pairing adds a lot to the action-packed movie, grounding it in the characters’ relationship with each other and the world Diana is discovering.
Their playful banter is subtle, but makes for some entertaining comedic moments and I wish I had a photo to include here of Chris Pine in the glowing pools because hell, that is some quality film-making.
Okay, at the risk of having ‘Naked Chris Pine in Wonder Woman’ in my search history, here is the best I could find:

This movie kicks ass in a lot of ways (female empowerment, film score, visuals, pacing, a thoughtful superhero who cares about saving humanity) and it has a great romance subplot to back it up. There are some very sweet, tender moments between these two characters and it’s quite satisfying to watch.
