Hi, everyone! Since it's been awhile and I have some fun/stressful news and new followers, here's a quick introduction! . . . I'm in the middle with my two kids - the "Rosie" and "Way" of Rosie Way Design. This picture was taken @krohnconservatory on Sunday. We're doing our best to get out and explore the world again. . . . I am an artist and scientist and love plants and animals and the environment and somehow wound up making cork bags and wallets. It fulfills both sides of my personality, allowing me to make something creative and one-of-a-kind as well as useful. It's like wearable art. Sewing is my therapy and helps keep me going and allows me to work at home and be there for my kids. My son has special needs so I'm all about being yourself, living your truth, and supporting others. . . Happy Earth Day! . . . I've thought throughout the day of what to post and unfortunately my phone won't let me load pictures of my latest creations or pictures from yesterday of snow-covered blooms so here's a #painting of #milkweed and a #monarch #caterpillar. . . . Monarchs are a threatened species and need our help by planting more milkweed. My brain hurts since I just talked to a therapist so please check out @xercessociety for more information. . . . I studied #conservation and #sustainability and do a variety of things to do my part. If you've been a customer, I'm sure you've noticed the recycled packaging and recycled tissue paper. My business cards are from @greenerprinter and 100% recycled. I am working on eliminating packaging tape and being fully #sustainable. I purposely only sew #cork since it's #ecofriendly, strong, hypoallergenic, and adds oxygen to the planet. Most linings are organic too! I use the highest quality hardware I can and am working on ensuring its safety as well as factory working conditions and more. . . As far as artwork like this, it is on pastelbord @ampersand_art and is FSC certified and made from recycled materials. The pastels are made to last and I'm working on finding USA made and fully sustainable materials. I purposely create #art about #nature to help educate others and show its beauty. Once all my current mats and packaging are used, new materials will all be made from plants and recycled materials. . . . If you have any questions or have ideas, I'm all ears. In what seems like a lifetime ago, I studied to be a Fine Artist and an Environmental Scientist. I took every class I could that took me to Edge of Appalachia Preserve in Adams County, Ohio. It truly is one of the most gorgeous places in #Ohio. I made this lovely #columbine #painting inspired by my time there as it stands out amid dolomite boulders in the woods. . . . Here's another view of this gorgeous wallet, the #laurelcrossbody from @corkandthread . . Rainbows have so much more meaning nowadays since my son was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and, as the name says, it is a spectrum and thus rainbows are representative. . . There are three levels of diagnosis which suggest one's abilities but I choose not to use that and will never state his full medical diagnosis. To me, it's about what you *can* do and not what a diagnosis says you can't. It's about empowering him in whatever ways I can. . . And since it's officially #autismacceptancemonth here in Ohio, I felt I just needed to say something. I feel like most people are AWARE of #autism but often don't ACCEPT it. With acceptance comes the ability to make calls you wouldn't typically make, go outside your comfort zone, go to different hospitals, have the strength to find new care partners, and generally do everything you can to help your child (and you). . . Awareness only goes so far. You may know it's a thing. You may be surprised that about 1:50 people are autistic. You may think it is caused by a large head (yes, someone told me that!). You may think it's caused by vaccines or heavy metals or who-knows-what-else. It was often used as a catch-all but the truth is, it's often genetic. You may believe something is MISSING or someone needs fixed but there is no cure. Nothing needs fixed. Simply stated, your brain is wired differently. And it should be celebrated. . . With acceptance, autistics (as well as those with other neurological disorders like ADD, ADHD, OCD, etc) can be valued for WHO they are and not WHAT they are and hopefully live fuller lives. There are so many stories in the news about autistics struggling with police at traffic stops, parents calling 911 for assistance and shots being fired, and so many other heartbreaking situations that could have been avoided with knowledge and ACCEPTANCE. Autistics often can't control what they say or how they act in certain situations (look up echolalia) and bright lights and loud noises easily lead to meltdowns. I can't share more than this until next week but I'm excited to show you this gorgeous new bag. And for those who sew, it's a terrific new pattern! . . . . It's been a rough few weeks. My daughter was in the ER Wednesday night. I've been at the hospital, Dr offices, therapy, or on the phone with providers everyday this week and most of last week. I'm exhausted. . . . It's Friday, y'all! We made it through another week. . . And I don't know what to say...but I'll try. This week was full of so much emotion and I couldn't find it in me to do much and then realized today is officially the year anniversary of when school was shut down in Ohio. The next day, my son had surgery to get tubes put in both ears to help prevent more ear infections. After that day, unnecessary surgeries were canceled. For my family, that surgery was necessary as it kept us from going to the Dr at least every other week during quarantine. I really cannot empathize how thankful I am that we were literally just in the nick of time enough. . . . I'm not sure how we made it through the past year and keep going. But we do. Sewing has definitely been a lifesaver...and cheaper than therapy. Well, maybe lol. It definitely helps calm my anxiety. . . When @sincerelyjenpatterns came out with the #funbobby #backpack in December, the open front seemed intriguing and I looked up at a painting I did of the beach where I got married and thought maybe I could translate it with #corkfabric so I played with ideas for awhile. And here it finally is in all its glory. It's not perfect (the grass hides some errors) but it's a reminder of happier times and that I can make whatever I want lol. I'm looking forward to taking it with me on new adventures and making new memories with my kids. Hopefully one day it'll sit in the sand on that #beach! . . .
