Hunter & Gatti's launch of the HG Issue at Openhouse Gallery
Tumblr media
Last night we attended Hunter & Gatti's official launch of the HG Issue- "The Series", and "Carne" at Openhouse Gallery (201 Mulberry. New York).
Tumblr media
This latest venture of the creative duo included a collection of celebrity portraits featuring Bruno Mars, Poppy Delevingne, Rebecca Ferguson and Douglas Booth, alongside acrylic paintings over photograph canvases from editorials for Vogue and Flaunt.
Tumblr media
It also included exclusive material from “Carne” (meat), with embroidered photographs from Inge Jakobsen and brain sculptures from Emilio Garcia.
The meat inspired projections with light and sound effects definitely added to the exhibition, transforming the gallery into a much more interactive experience.

The exhibit ends today at 9pm. Be sure to check it out.

We truly had a blast at ComicCon this year!  The past weekend was chock full of updates and tidbits to keep fans eagerly waiting to see what will happen to their favorite characters. Not to mention the incredible Costume play (Cosplay).
Tumblr media
October in NY is always wonderful; we start to see pumpkin flavored EVERYTHING and this past weekend we attended ComicCon. Once a year, this wondrous event full of cosplay, toys, news, and celebrities come to NY for a special 3 day event at the Jacob Javits Center.
We loved seeing how creative people got with their costumes; everything from super heroes to monsters was fantastic
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here is some Interesting news we heard from the different panels!!
Announcements:
X-Files
David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson were both present at the X- Files panel to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the show that scared us when we were kids. The actors and screen writer, Chris Carter, have expressed interest in making a 3rd movie, which would be great, but the final decision however, is still in 20th Century Fox’s hands. We really hope this idea takes off.
Tumblr media
Walking Dead
Not much was hinted at this year’s panel. But from what we did hear, Chandler Riggs’ character (Carl) is going to start “kicking ass” and Daryl and Carol’s romance will be explored a bit deeper. There was also talk of bringing characters from the successful video game onto the screen. The video game has garnered a reputation for its story-line that is based on the decisions we make as well as life's moral dilemmas. We hope this series keeps on growing and showing us just how "bad" zombies can be.
Tumblr media
Game of Thrones
What can be said about this series that hasn't already been said? The panel, which included actor Jerome Flyn (Bronn), hinted that the 4th season will be quite different than previous ones. He went on to say that fans will be “quite surprised” at exactly how different. If the show’s writers, and actors keep finding more ways to surprise us, we welcome the fresh new material; more surprising than the "Red Wedding"- bring it on!!!. We’re sure Gorge R.R. Martin will appreciate it too.

Making a Splash--A Fun Summer's Day at Coney Island and the New York Aquarium
This Friday, our adventurous intern Dora visited Coney Island--home to New York's most famous beach, the New York Aquarium, the Cyclone, and Nathan's famous hot dogs!  Below, we'll give you a rundown of our thoughts on this seaside attraction.
Tumblr media
Coney Island - Amusement Park: ✭✭✭✭✩
The amusement park at Coney Island offers a wide variety of fun rides, games, and live amusement for all ages--and with an all-day fun pass, you can really have the full experience of the park.  Whether you'd like to have a good thrill on the famous Cyclone or compete to win some fabulous prizes, the amusement park has it all, and more!  This is definitely a great place to spend an afternoon with friends and family, offering a plethora of options for anyone to enjoy.
Coney Island - Beach & Boardwalk: ✭✭✭✩✩
The boardwalk of Coney Island is a favorite for many people, allowing unobstructed views of both the amusement park and the vast beach coastline.  The beach itself, however, is often littered with a lot of trash, and, on days when the weather is nice, is extremely crowded.  However, it is a great place to relax and unwind, with food and drink vendors on the beach walking up and down the strip to cater to your needs, and Nathan's hot dogs and other food only a few short steps away.  Generally, the beach is nice for walks and photo ops, but doesn't quite hold up to better beaches on the east coast or even in New York state.
Tumblr media
Coney Island - New York Aquarium: ✭✭✭✭✭
Fish, seals, and jellyfish all find their home at the New York Aquarium at Coney Island, New York's premier aquarium.  It has an expansive interior design and an endless list of things you can do--so you really can't go wrong.  While Dora was there, she enjoyed a performance by the sea lions and walked through the beautifully serene sea tunnel (as shown in the photo above).  The shows are the best way to enjoy your time at the aquarium, although you can also meet the adorable sea otters, penguins, and other sea creatures in special exhibits scattered throughout the building.

Visiting New York City's Top Attractions: Tourist Traps or Unique Experiences?
Summer is the prime time for tourists and NYC residents alike to enjoy New York City.  But with so many options for things to do, how does one choose?  Is it worth it for New Yorkers to visit these places?
RYG's brave intern ventured into the foray to pick out the best, most interesting city attractions.  Below are images and a few short remarks on a few of the most well-known attractions in NYC--Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Center), the New York Public Library, Grand Central Station, and the 9/11 Memorial.
Tumblr media
Pictured in image: view of Empire State Building & view of Central Park
Top of the Rockefeller Center: ✭✭✭✭✭
If you've never had a good look at an aerial view of Manhattan, it'd be a shame to miss the beautiful sights you can only see at 60 floors above ground level.  To allow people to make the most of their visit, the Rockefeller Center offers rides to the Top of the Rock Observation Deck for $27 (adult admission ticket), where visitors can take photos while enjoying the breathtaking scenery of Manhattan and its surrounding areas.  In addition to the view from above, the elevator ride up to the deck is filled with beautiful lights and special effects on the elevator ceiling.  Lastly, the Rockefeller center offers ticket packages that can offer discounted admission to NYC museums and eateries as well.
Tumblr media
New York Public Library - Main Branch: ✭✭✭✭✩
The New York Public Library is everything a book lover could ever want--cavernous, quiet, and filled with books.  The main branch of the NYPL has a sort of effervescent charm that lies in its Greek-inspired architectural design; the statues, columns, and flourishing design of the exterior of the building lends it a classic sense of tradition and timeless beauty.  While there are thousands of books in this large library, this branch of the NYPL is only one of many--but it certainly does a great job of showing off for the others.  It's definitely worth a visit for the aesthetic beauty, but if you're looking to actually pick up some books, maybe one of the smaller branches is a better bet, as it will have fewer tourists.  To be honest, some tourists just walk in, take pictures, and leave, as they don't have much time to stay for the books.
Tumblr media
Grand Central Station: ✭✭✭✭✩
The historical station has served New York City since 1871--back in the heyday of the immigrant rush.  The renovated terminal looks more wonderful than ever.  It recently celebrated its 100th Birthday, yet still upholds its glorious image.  The various shops and restaurants make visiting the terminal a unique experience; and, since many actual New Yorkers pass through the station each day, being in Grand Central allows you to get a sense of the business and chaos that defines New York City.  Visiting Grand Central is definitely worth it, if you want to truly understand the history and culture of New York.
Tumblr media
9/11 Memorial: ✭✭✭✭✭
The 9/11 Memorial pays tribute to the Americans who lost their lives due to the tragic events of September 11th, 2001.  Visitors can enjoy the simple and clean design of the park while learning more about the history of this area and the Twin Towers.  The names of all those who passed away that day are carved into the sides of two unique reflection pools, each one constructed where a previous Twin Tower sat.  On an individual's birthday, a rose is placed in the engraving of his/her name.  In addition, the nearly completed new World Trade Center towers above the area with its formidable height--a testament to the rebirth and strength of (the world's best!) city and a nation.
Note: This is a two-part segment.  We will soon post an entry detailing the pros and cons of another famous NYC tourist attraction--stay tuned!

Surrealism in the Age of Technology: Jasper Elings Transforms the Experience of Digital Art
For much of the 20th and 21st centuries, digital and traditional art have been enjoyed in different realms--genres generally depicted the same themes and subjects, and each artist maintained a recognizable but singular style. Even in New York City, many associate modern art with the Museum of Modern Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art with more traditional artistic styles.  However, with the rapid advancements made in current technology, a digital crossover into the realm of art is all but inevitable.  The latest breakthrough in this field comes from Jasper Elings, a contemporary artist who works largely with elements of digitalism and traditional photography/art.
In his clever artistic manipulations, Elings gives us a glimpse into the twisted and morally gray world of our digital realm.  The sharp contrast between modern technological elements and the traditional photographs or paintings provokes a surprised reaction from the viewers, who are probably used to seeing works that simply fit into one artistic genre.  By juxtaposing artistic mediums uncommonly seen together, Elings openly challenges fixed mindsets and encourages his viewers to rethink what art really means, especially in this day and age.
Elings' digital dadaism is thought-provoking, original, and a bit controversial.  Whether we enjoy it or not, one thing is certain: Elings' artwork will set out to change the way his viewers think about our society and how art plays a role in our modern world.

A Wink, a Poke, a "Save"--The new way of mingling in the digital age
Tumblr media
Gone are the days of good old fashioned online dating--with technology constantly changing and our lives getting busier, it only makes sense that scrolling through romantic interests from your smartphone is the new progression in urban dating. Dating apps allow users to save time and do things at their own pace, without compromising the potential of meeting other people.
We decided to check out some options and give it a go.  Below is a rundown of our experience on the latest trending dating apps: Tinder, Date My School, and Zoosk.
Tinder General: Tinder is the latest trendy dating app, where users can swipe left (no) or right (yes) to indicate interest in other members, based on the pictures they have uploaded to their Tinder profile.  The app will locate people in a local radius (set by the user) and show eligible candidates that fit the user's choices for sex and age range.  If the interest is mutual, the members are matched, and can message each other.  The swiping aspect of the app gives it a fun, game-like quality.  By engaging users and increasing efficiency in matches, Tinder has drawn thousands of monthly users.  Tinder is generally geared towards a younger age group; the average age of a user is about 27 years. Safety: Since each user must sign in with their Facebook accounts and use the app on their phones, Tinder ensures--for the most part--that each user is legitimate and that each person only maintains one account.  Furthermore, users can only message each other if they are matched, and may block each other as well.  That said, however, it is always recommended that you practice personal safety rules--never give out your name, address, or other personal information.  Accounts can be deactivated or deleted at any time. Pros: Safety, secrecy, ease of use, fun/game-like quality to appeal to younger users, a variety of members Cons: Android app lags far behind iPhone app, can't take second look at candidates' profiles unless matched, can't delete accidental or unwanted matches (but can block users), can only use on smartphones Personal Tip: Be aware that you may accidentally swipe right for certain people when you start using the app (I made the mistake several times myself)! It takes a while to get used to the fact that you can't swipe backwards to view the person again, so if you accidentally swipe right, you've "liked" the individual. If you get a match through this mistake, you might be contacted by the other person. Some users utilize Tinder in a more casual manner, like for hookups--so you may be "propositioned" through the messenger. DateMySchool General: Created by two college alumni, DMS (DateMySchool) is a unique online platform that allows verified college students and alumni to network, chat, and mingle.  The site's main interactive features include instant messaging, messaging, and "saving" other members to look at in the future.  You can see who views you, and vice versa.  Users choose which people can see them (depending on location, school admissions selectivity, etc.), and are able to block each other as well. Safety: DMS is built upon a network of college students and alumni, with each user required to register with their school's email address and select a nondescript username.  This rule enforces the one person per account rule.  In general, DMS allows the user to feel in control of who they interact with.  Accounts can be deactivated or deleted at any time. Pros: Selectivity, safety, interactive profiles, can see who viewed you, can sync DMS with email contacts to block people you know who are also on DMS, can use on both smartphones and desktop Cons: Viewing someone too many times or "saving" his/her profile can come off as creepy... Personal Tip: The privacy and search settings can be very useful on DMS, and certainly is the feature that separates it from the other dating apps of the pack.  Remember to choose carefully, as it can limit who you see and who sees you. Overall, It's a great feature that makes the entire system a lot safer and more efficient, saving you a lot of time in the process. Zoosk General: Zoosk is a general dating app that is free and open to all users.  Sign-up is very easy, and users can set the gender, location radius, and age range of users they wish to communicate with.  This romantic social network allows people to make friends and mingle with others in an interactive environment.  Zoosk, like Tinder, is integrated into Facebook--allowing for easier access to your own photos and information to upload to your profile.  However, Zoosk is a lot more open than DMS and Tinder, as any user can message another or interact with another. Safety: Like many other dating sites, Zoosk allows blocking other users, and accounts can be deactivated or deleted at any time.  Furthermore, you can deny another user's request to chat with you if you don't feel inclined to speak with them. Pros: A variety of users (not just limited to students/alumni), can pay to "promote" your page on sidebar, can use on both smartphone and desktop Cons: Your page is visible to everyone whose criteria you fall into, cannot filter by school/education, website interface slightly cluttered Personal Tip: Remember to set your age, location, and gender preferences!  In the beginning, I had my settings set to find people ages 18-99 from anywhere, and I got users from all over the U.S.--which wasn't very helpful.
---------- Regardless of what your dating preference is or what you're looking for, the journey of meeting your potential other should be an exciting one!  Hopefully this guide has helped you understand which app might be best for you. A highlight from my experience: "I lost my number. Can I borrow yours?" (Note: These opinions are representative of my own personal experience as a heterosexual woman.  My interaction with people in these dating platforms was solely limited to the online realm.  As always, regular safety precautions are advised when using these apps.)

If companies can mine and sell your personal data to make a profit, why can't you?
Tumblr media
Sites like Facebook and Google are well-known for taking user data and using it to tailor which advertisements you see, as well as to personalize your experience in different ways.  Oftentimes, this data is sold to third-party companies, which can then use that information to properly target you as a customer.  Customers have expressed outrage over this practice--but what if there was a way to game this system to our advantage? Startup Reputation.com aims to change the way personal data is exchanged with companies, making the process more user-friendly with the added benefit of perks and rewards.  Monetizing this information could help companies better understand their customers, while active social media users could benefit from letting the companies know more about themselves.  A program that would facilitate this exchange is currently in development at Reputation.com, with plans to be released in the next year.

A beautiful soul left our world yesterday. Talia Joy Castellano, who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma (and later, also leukemia), finished her 7 year brave battle with cancer at the age of 13. The honorary CoverGirl and bubbly internet personality has touched millions of lives via her quirky makeup tutorials and inspirational outlook on being a kid dealing with cancer. We will always remember her radiant smile and passion for life. Thank you, Talia. Rest in peace.
