The more time passes, the deeper I understand the 2023 Pricilla movie, and how saying “it was normal back then” is a self-aware manipulation.

As much as I really didn’t like Pricilla 2023, I find myself thinking about it often due to its powerful trait of slowly making me come to terms with just how fucked up the topic is. Obviously, grooming is disgusting, wrong, evil, and abusive, and for the longest time, I thought that’s what the movie was all about.

I now see it’s not just about the atrocities of grooming, but also the normalization.

Before, I mistook the film’s awkwardness as bad acting or bad directing, etc. But, now I see that the movie was meant to be incredibly awkward. That’s the point.

It feels silly now to realize this so late. In the past, it’s not like people couldn’t see grooming was bad, it was just normal. Normal doesn’t mean right, and it doesn’t mean agreeable. Everything feels awkward throughout the movie because it is. Seeing people continue to ignore something so plainly wrong is incredibly awkward and uncomfortable. It makes you feel alone and crazy, exactly how these men want you to feel.

These men like Elvis, they know what they’re doing is wrong. Others around them know it’s wrong. They know if they are too proud about saying the quiet part out loud, people will start to confront their actions. They use the power of social normality and patriarchy to continue their manipulation.

So, the next time someone tries and says “it was normal back then” to justify grooming, I will know how to respond. I understand on a deeper level now that normal will never equal okay, and that this is one of many lines groomers have learned in order to manipulate people.

Every time a fanfiction I’ve been reading for months (or even years) comes to an end, I feel a piece of myself die just a little. It’s a different feeling than when a tv show or book series ends, because those things are usually on strict schedules, and are edited and changed by producers. There’s just something about when a single person, or a very small group of people somewhere finishes a project like this. Truly an amazing thing to experience as a reader, and an agonizingly beautiful thing to see come to an end.
