Six: Nine? As in the guy who's banned from Disney World for biting Buzz Lightyear?
John: In his defense, he thought it was someone else.
Six: ...
Six: Who?

there's something so special to me about queer friendly churches that i took for granted until i found out not every church was like mine.
the way a trans girl's eyes light up when people from the congregation use her chosen name and pronouns with ease, never even questioning it, after she spent two decades in churches that used religion to push hatred.
people venerating God in the same breath as they remark on how pretty the pride flags are, because they know it's a part of Their creation.
a rainbow candle being lit alongside the Christ candle, a symbol of how God and queerness are forever intertwined.
men talking about their husbands and women talking about their wives with other congregation members. sitting behind a gay couple throughout the service. they're just another part of the church, and they come as they are.
people saying that God loves everyone like it should be obvious. they don't need to add qualifiers because there aren't any.
churches walking in the pride parade, smiling and waving at the crowd. people at pride crying out joyfully when they see the churches, realizing that there is a place for them if they want it.
prayers for the safety of queer people being said during services.
a family immigrating here and finding out there's a place for their trans daughter. the congregation accepting them and offering resources without question, welcoming them with actions and words. the knowledge that their daughter will grow up in a church that sees her as a girl, as a valuable member, as someone loved by God simply by virtue of existing.
old people in the congregation going to pride services and learning the flags. they might not understand, but they want to learn. they ask questions because they genuinely want to understand.
ministers talking openly about homophobia and transphobia, both within the church and the outside world. looking for solutions, combating these issues, all in the effort of making the church a safe place.
the church recognizing their political power and using it for the better. talking about discriminatory bills and how to combat them, discussing the rampant transphobia in politics, urging people to help. people from the church showing up to protests, participating in letter writing campaigns, talking to politicians about these issues. it's all part of following God.
understanding the difference between tolerance and acceptance. it's not just that queer people are allowed in; they're actively included. pamphlets on queerness sit next to the door. posters of information about the lgbtq+ community are put up on the corkboard. they will embrace you with open arms, and they will keep trying to do better, because you're important to them.
the church has space for queer people. we're valuable parts of the congregation, and any good church will recognize that. i grew up knowing God's love had no bounds, and that's the way religion should be.

it's crazy to me how much addicts are stigmatized and discriminated against by healthcare workers. for one, half the time they're just assuming someone is an addict, and it's mainly poc that are assumed to be addicts simply for not being white. secondly, addiction is a mental health issue, and needs treatment.
but my main issue is that addicts still need healthcare. addiction doesn't make health issues go away. in fact, something like chronic pain could lead someone to drug abuse, especially if they aren't receiving proper care from professionals. denying an addict pain meds when they're in pain won't make it go away. you're just denying them treatment and prolonging the issue.
i'm not in healthcare, but the solution seems pretty simple. try to avoid drugs they're addicted to if you can while still giving them adequate treatment. hell, most addicts would openly say what they use if you're kind to them and show that you actually want to help. if substance abuse is a concern, maybe keep them under observation for a bit and monitor the drug use. if they need a drug they're addicted to, give it to them if they consent. treatment needs to come first. offer resources, like harm reduction agencies, for when they leave.
and on the flip side, don't fucking give recovered addicts drugs they used to be addicted to when they ask you not to. i've seen multiple stories of people in recovery asking doctors not to give them certain drugs, then they get given those drugs anyways. either work to find a substitution, or if there's none available, be open with the patient about why this drug is their only option for medicine and talk through what they can do if they choose to take it or not.
just. listen to your patients. addicts need care too.

saying "i don't want kids" isn't selfish. it's actually quite selfless in many aspects. you know why i don't want kids, at least not yet?
because i want to be able to tell my kids they made my life better. i don't want my child to feel like a burden, or like they ruined my life. i want them to see the love in my eyes when i look at them, not frustration at them taking up space. i want them to know they're assets, not obstacles. i want to be telling the truth when i say they're the best thing that ever happened to me.
but i can't do any of that, not yet, and not for at least a good while longer. if i have kids, i want it to be joyful. if i can't provide that, i don't want them.

After three weeks of back-and-forth and a bit of confusion at the local print shop, I'm pleased to announce that June postcards for Postcard of the Month Club over on Patreon have gone out!
If you aren't a member of the PotMC tier, but would like to get this lovely group of well-dressed late-18th-century dancers anachronistically celebrating Pride, sign up before the end of the month, and they will be mailed to your home (or any address you provide me with) along with a brief handwritten note.

Good lord thank god for my sister catching the item descriptions on the international orders
I nearly sent out ten packages to Europe labeled as “Explosive Material Hazard”
Updated them all to say “Enamel Pin” instead

Can gay trans men be dykes?
Or is dyke a lesbian-only term, is what I meant to ask
Short answer: yes.
Long answer: Cis queers specifically often view slurs like "fag" and "dyke" to be anti-gay/lesbian but not inherently anti-trans. Trans women being called fags is "misdirected homophobia"; trans men getting called dykes is "misdirected lesbophobia."
Trans men are not called "dykes" on accident. Anti-queer hatred is not organized around modern queer identities. "Dyke" is an insult directed at someone that society demands heterosexual womanhood from, who rejects or fails that demand.
Transphobia is not a completely distinct from other forms of queerphobia. As much as people are loathe to admit it, for centuries trans men and gay women and bisexual women and asexual & aromantic women and nonbinary people have been part of the same communities and have been collectively called slurs like "dykes" for their deviances from the norm.
This is tied to a larger problem with our community obsessing over who can use what anti-queer slurs out of a desire of white queers to imitate Black people's relationship to the n word. But this is not that.

"capitalism is natural!" capitalism didn't exist until fairly recently in human history. it had to be introduced to much of the world because it wasn't common practice. before capitalism, people traded goods and services instead of money, and many societies were collaborative to ensure the survival of the group.
"humans are inherently selfish!" then why did early humans care for people they weren't even related to? they cared for the disabled, the sick, the elderly, people who would never be able to provide the labour needed for basic survival. they lived in groups, not on their own. resources were shared, not hoarded.
"every society ends up using capitalism." there are still isolated tribes that don't use capitalism. the only reason much of the world uses capitalism is because it was forced upon them, through colonization and war. there have been many instances of societies attempting to break away from capitalism, being successful, and then another nation, often the usa, does a coup and installs capitalism again.
"socialism/communism is doomed to fail!" what system do you think people used before capitalism? sure, the terms weren't around back then, but most societies used some form of what we would refer to as socialism or communism today.
the human race would not have survived had capitalist values been natural. we would have died out long before even having the terms to describe it.
