I really enjoyed reading the description and seeing how much thought was out into the character background. I also did find the YouTube thumbnails to be very helpful in establishing vibe and giving more outfit info, and I did my best to translate all of the references into this piece!

I think I could’ve been more creative with facial expression and composition overall—I did try to emphasize the rabbit features a bit, though, which was fascinating to play around with! I really liked your coloring approach on that one headshot (which you can probably tell was my primary point of reference), and as someone who loves translating color from one area to others where it typically wouldn’t show, I definitely enjoyed playing around with that as well.

I’m also not sure how clear it is that he’s sewing up his hand, as my linework ended up staying on the messier side, but that’s the action that’s going on here. 😅 Anyway, I enjoyed exploring this character, super cool concept!

I am so proud of how the mirror turned out on this, holy shit!! Only realized after that the piercings are on the wrong side to be mirrored, but shhhh maybe they switched them over for a minute or something (or it’s a magic selfie mirror??).

Also I had seen this character posted somewhere prior (and seemingly unrelated??) to ArtFight and wanted to draw them, so it was super awesome to stumble upon them again on the ArtFight site itself!

Summary:

Look at how full that calendar is—and the only day off in sight filled up with an appointment! Truly unfair. And with that many jobs… well, it’ll probably be a long time before Jimbo Jumbo gets any kind of vacation at all.

Artist Notes:

I am very much hoping he does get time off sometimes though, seriously! Anyway, I really appreciated how many little bits of info were listed here, gave me a good idea for how to set the scene and approach the piece.

I particularly enjoyed the detail of the ragdoll body, and I took some creative liberties with this and created some small details/patterns which varied across the segments. I liked the idea of using reclaimed fabric for the different parts, and that’s how this came about!

One thing I wasn’t certain about were the button eyes—I had an alternative idea to use the same kind of eyes you attach to a crochet project (or which you see in teddy bears), those smooth, black hemisphere deals, but the buttons felt like a lot more fun.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy it, and Happy ArtFight 2025!

Lightly Quartz (They/He)

Summary:

Lightly Quartz is basically just a faesona of me. I am mostly just put them here to have reference for my future self and because I could and I needed at least one more character to fill out the team card, to be honest.

Design Elements:

The tattoos shift and change as desired by the character, which is another way of saying I don’t feel like having to withdraw all of these tattoos exactly the same every single time lol. Also, it would be pretty cool to be able to change tattoos at will.

The piercings, however, are stable and are noted in the little notes portions on the character sheet.

I really love glitter, so feel free to add whatever sparkles or glittery type designs you desire, especially on the wings! The wings also have an iridescent quality and can be see-through. The gradient and proportion of the colors might change, but they always stay that sunset palette of yellow, orange, and pink.

Permissions:

I would definitely prefer that changes not be made to this character, except for clothing, since they are a character that represents me.

I also would like to be checked in with on any changes or anything, explicit, disturbing, violent, or potentially upsetting before doing it since that might be more uncomfortable for me with this character than my other characters.

Fanart & Art Practice

A short Essay on Fanart, Accessibility, and the Impact of Fanart on My Relationship with Art

I used to think my sketches weren’t worth very much. Growing up, I was so sure I was going to be a writer, that I didn’t have the talent to make visual work but that I *did* have a lot of thoughts about words. Well, it turns out I’m more of a visual thinker, but I lacked the time spent observing things to better form those thoughts when I was a teenager. I had stopped regularly making art for most of a decade, and coming back to it these past few years has been a fascinating and revitalizing experience.

Now at the age of twenty-seven, I’ve mostly shifted away from writing (though I still do write academically-ish and I’ll work on the occasional fic) and draw or engage in some other visual creative activity every day. I am also disabled—this has impacted me every day of my life since I was a child, and I only just received official diagnoses earlier this year. Part of that for me is chronic pain, which extends to my hands. I can no longer crochet, and many mediums (those which require much friction) are not so friendly with me.

That is why sketching and fanart have become so important to me. As I mentioned, I never thought I’d become an artist, and I never expected to have the confidence to post any of my work online or to show anyone in person. Shit, for the longest time I wouldn’t even *try* to draw fanart because I was worried it would be embarrassing. But as I revived my visual creative practice, I started learning how to have patience and compassion for myself—I considered what it might be like to respond to that kind of shame or fear like, “Yeah, and so what?”

It’s been… strange. This kind of thinking got me to start experimenting with different tools, different ways of doing things. I’ve learned how to listen to my body, to sit and observe an element in my environment as if trying to remember each detail in order to sketch it without looking the next day. I was encouraged to try and fail, and to enjoy the silliness of that failure. The sketches on my blog here are some of my better sketches, but I have some absolutely ridiculous ones that are honestly a joy to see.

When I got burnt out by college (again), I thought “Hey, maybe I’ll finally try more fanart.” It’s been a slow process. This is the first time since I’ve started up with art again that I’ve actually continued making fanart on a regular basis—there’s so much I haven’t shared, and that’s exciting to me! I love having these little surprises in my sketchbook, and it invites me to open it more often.

Making fanart is encouraging me to explore, to look at my environment again and consider what else might happen there, or how to transplant an incredible leaf texture onto an artwork, or how to take a page which was meant for a project I decided not to continue into something that fills the space with joy (that’s this sketch page, by the way).

I make these sketches to practice for the more detailed pieces, yes. But I also make them to sustain me. Practice can be fun—it can be a lifeline when chronic pain flare-ups make in-depth work unmanageable, or when life shows up and funnels away the time. I honestly love making fanart, and I hope I continue to make it and look at other fanart and rejoice in the shared enjoyment of beloved works and characters.
