Something interesting I've noticed, (and which was illustrated clearly in this post by @analynasi) is that whenever Katara brings up her mother's death, she's trying to relate to or empathise with other characters, right? We see this clearly with Aang, Jet and Haru (also her three "canon" love interests). And they tend to follow a similar pattern:
Tumblr media
A: *is taking them to and talking about the other airbenders*
K: The fire nation is ruthless. They killed my mother. They could have done the same to your people.
A: Just because no one's seen an airbender, doesn't mean the fire nation killed them all. They probably escaped.
K: I know it's hard to accept.
A: You don't understand, Katara.
Tumblr media
H: The only way I can feel close to my father now is when I practise my bending. He taught me everything I know.
K: See this necklace? My mother gave it to me.
H: It's beautiful.
K: I lost my mother in a fire nation raid. This necklace is all I have left of her.
H: It's not enough is it?
Tumblr media
J: The fire nation killed my parents. I was only eight years old. That day changed me forever.
K: Sokka and I lost our mother to the fire nation.
J: I'm so sorry Katara.
So
Character brings up people close to them who are- or most likely are- dead or gone because of the fire nation.
Katara tells them that her mother is also gone to show that she can empathise and understands their pain.
Character relates to her better, showing this by expressing sympathy or understanding.
(Unless of course it's Aang, who essentially heard the part relevant to himself and zoned out for the rest. And I mean fair enough, he is twelve and avoiding acknowledging the horrendous likelihood that he is all alone in the world. Jet and Haru are closer to Katara's age and can better understand and empathise with her trauma, being in very similar situations themselves.)
Now the interesting part!
Katara's entire character arc is rooted in her mother's death. It's what caused her to have her motherly protective nature which made her act as a carer to every member of the gaang (bar one exception of course). Her character arc resolves when she faces Kya's killer. So these moments when she brings up that experience with these characters are very defining and consistent with her overall arc. Katara provides empathy and support for others, relating to their losses and never, until almost the very end, getting any closure or support for herself.
Or... That is... except:
Tumblr media
Remember the pattern?
1. Character brings up people close to them who are- or most likely are- dead or gone because of the fire nation.
K: You have no idea what this war has put me through, me personally. The fire nation took my mother away from me.
2. Katara tells them that her mother is also gone to show that she can empathise and understands their pain.
Z: I'm sorry.
Z: That's something we have in common.
3. Character relates to her better, showing this by expressing sympathy or understanding.
*Later*
K: I'm sorry I yelled at you.
It's honestly funny how perfectly this fits as a role-reversed reprisal of every time Katara has reached out to support or understand other people over mutual loss.
Except this time, Katara's on the receiving end. She's being comforted, not having to be the comforter.
It's then poetic that the one person who provides her with what she is so often expected to give, is also the one who stands by her when her arc is complete.

Note
how are you gonna talk about shitty writing when you genuinely believe that katara should've become the pocahontas to zuko's john smith? come on now. shipping zutara is one thing, but you can't ignore the colonial connotations of a native girl becoming an oppressor's arm candy, no matter how well-intentioned that oppressor is. fire lady katara is such a gross idea.
the truth is, the only reason you give a fuck about katara is because you want her to be with zuko. otherwise your entire blog wouldn't be dedicated to the idea of her as fire lady. you do. not. care. about. katara. at all. and putting down healers in the middle of the worst global pandemic in 100 years is so shitty, selfish, and short-sighted.
that’s a whole lot of words you’re trying to shove in my mouth there, bud!
unfortunately for you, i’m not about to choke on them.
the thing is, first of all, that it is deeply fucking insulting (and probably highkey racist) of you to attempt to compare Pocahontas and John Smith--real people, who actually existed, and whose story (both the real one, and the fictionalized and romanticized account given in the Disney movie) bears absolutely no resemblance to AtLA in the slightest respect--to Katara and Zuko, fictional characters from a fictional universe who never existed and, again, have nothing in common with the colonial narrative you’re trying to impose on them. I really shouldn’t have to explain to you why trying to compare a genuine colonialist ‘the colonists aren’t that bad actually, see, that native girl fell in love with one’ story (which was based on a false account the white man in question continued to perpetuate long after Matoaka’s death, when she could no longer refute it) to a fantasy where the bad guys lost and Zuko was very deliberately set up to be a good leader and lead them into an age of peace, kindness, and love is like.... tone deaf at fucking best lmfao
if you can’t understand that, then there’s really no helping you.
secondly, you’re the one insisting that ‘the native girl become the oppressor’s arm candy’. that’s your narrative, not mine, and it certainly has no place in my interpretation of canon nor in any of my fanworks. in everything i write and the way i conceive zutara, katara is zuko’s equal in every way that matters--she’s an ambassador with a hand in global politics long before she and zuko get married, and she helps shape the world every bit as much as zuko and aang do as the land begins to heal from the aftermath of the war. there’s nothing ‘arm candy’ about that, and zuko is not her oppressor in any measurable or meaningful sense.
frankly, he isn’t during the show either, except insofar as he is part of the oppressor nation--which is a fair point but, again, the fire nation ceases to be an oppressive power after the end of the war. (no, the comics don’t count. they are badly written and make no sense, so i’ve elected to ignore them entirely. if you can’t, or if you refuse to, then a) that’s your problem, not mine, and b) maybe tell me why you’re so concerned about katara allegedly being zuko’s arm candy but you don’t care when the narrative makes her aang’s) so your assertion that i don’t care about katara really doesn’t mean much to me, since it’s very clear to me that i care about her a whole hell of a lot more than you do.
i care about katara enough to want her to have narrative agency in her romantic relationships. i care about katara enough to want her to actually have a hand in shaping the world, rather than being reduced to ‘the Avatar’s girl’ and contributing absolutely nothing of any meaningful value to the world we see in LoK. i care enough about katara to want her achievements recognized by the world. (aka where is katara’s fucking statue you assholes) i care about katara enough to want her to have a story and a life that is her own, rather than being reduced to a footnote in history because she had the Avatar’s children and that’s the only thing anyone really remembers her for. i care enough about katara to want her to be able to attend important events in her family’s lives (like, oh, her granddaughter’s Air Master ceremony) and to be able to protect her family rather than sitting back and not lifting a finger while they are in grave danger or her people are on the verge of tearing themselves apart.
as for the dig about healers, like....what???? when have i ever disparaged healing or put down healers lmfao. like, projection, much? i’ve never said a single bad word about healing--what i have said is that katara being relegated to the healing huts and nothing else (she isn’t allowed to go save her family even though zuko and toph are just as old as she is and they get to protect their families; she isn’t allowed to go to her granddaughter’s Air Master ceremony, the single most important event in an airbender’s life; she isn’t allowed to so much as raise her voice when her tribe is on the verge of entering into a catastrophic civil war (so much for katara being a respected matriarch of the tribe); she isn’t even allowed to heal a single significant injury throughout the course of the entire show, not even the one caused by bloodbending, despite allegedly being the greatest healer in the world) is a disservice to her character, especially since she’s the one who said ‘i don’t want to heal, i want to fight!’
i’ve said again and again that i wouldn’t have a problem with katara dedicating her life to being a wife, a mother, and a healer, if that weren’t all she would ever be known for. some minor lipservice is paid to katara ‘training two avatars’, and to being part of the gaang who saved the world, and even to getting bloodbending outlawed, but throughgout the entirety of LoK none of her accomplishments matter to the story even a little bit. and don’t give me that ‘it wasn’t her story’ bullshit, because there was certainly enough room for the old men in the white lotus back during atla to kick ass and take names and have pride in their accomplishments. king bumi was 112 for fuck’s sake! so don’t give me ‘katara was too old’ either. she wasn’t. bryke just didn’t give a shit about her.
and evidently you don’t either. don’t let the door hit you in your ass on the way out.

Y'now I kinda feel bad about it now, but I didn't know a thing about eastern philosophy, and such back then, and never understood things like Zuko's fever, or the guru's meaning. And thanks to book 3, and the comics people are always joking about how Zuko falls into an "angst coma" if he does the right thing. It's sad to see these important things reduced to mere jokes thanks to Bryke.:( Also lots of people saw Zuko's tea shop behavior as ooc, what do you think of that?
Tumblr media
Oh, I so agree. It does bother me that people think that his fever was just something random that the writers of the show made up that could be interpreted to mean anything. But no. It was something very specific. It’s not an angst coma, lol. I also find it sad that people think tea shop Zuko was OOC. If anything, I thought that was the REAL Zuko coming back for the first time. The beautiful prince he was always meant to be. Who he really was, and who he would have been if he had not been abused. I always saw Zuko’s real personality as being like that, ever since Book 1. That was what The Storm was all about. How could it be OOC? I didn’t find his happiness weird or “creepy” at all. Or the slightest bit disingenuous. Some say he was just trying to convince himself that he was happy, but he wasn’t. I understand why people think that. What else are people going to think when he goes bad right afterwards? Of course his mood will look fake. But it wasn’t. Zuko was just opening his chakras like Aang was and experiencing the natural result.

Symptoms of Awakening
This website explains it well.
The process of a Spiritual Awakening is not always positive, it is the deconstruction of the old self stripping away the layers of the karmic shell to be reborn into the new evolved consciousness. It is the metamorphosis of the soul and the transcendence of the Ego. In many forms it is the concept of going through Ego Death.
Once the Kundalini has Awakened our subconscious or shadow self breaks through into our Reality. We are not only faced with our worst fears but we are faced with the crumpling sense that the truth of what we conceive of reality is shattered. The worst thing that can happen to a person is the realization that everything within our reality is an illusion, it can even be so strong as to drive a person mad.
However a Kundalini awakening or Spiritual Awakening is the crumpling away of truth into the awakening of mental clarity. It will not only feel like an identity crisis but the things you once loved will turn into what you no longer desire. You may lose your job, your house, your loved ones, perhaps even your family as the old you goes through a process of being reborn. What was once hidden from you will be revealed upon awakening…Once you are able to face your own internal darkness, you will once again find the infinite light within your soul. True clarity begins once the walls of your old reality start falling all around you and you begin to see the world with new senses.
Tumblr media
•Dark Night of the soul – The Dark night of the Soul is a natural part of awakening, it is the shedding away of our old skin. It’s the ripping apart of the old soul to be reborn into the New evolved consciousness. There appears to be more chaos that enters into your life as the old you encounters the resistance of Letting go. A desire to hold onto the old you, building a resistance of Letting go which causes more and more entropy within your daily life. A Dark night of the soul creates an isolation with those around us, everything begins to rip apart within our reality, our friends, our family, and those we love most we feel we can’t connect anymore. We feel an inability to connect because the universe is asking us to look more inward and question ourselves, our reality and what is our purpose here. It is usually triggered by a dark event surrounding Loss such as death, a bad breakup, loss of a job, loss of a house, rape, illness, etc. A cataclysm that triggers the destruction of the Ego as our subconscious breaks through. It gives us a look behind our own face into our worst fears and insecurities. It is about facing our dark night of the soul to get to the infinite light of our being.
•Body Temperature Changes – Having a hot flash in the middle of winter may seem a bit strange for just about anyone who isn’t menopausal but that is exactly what it can feel like! It literally feels as if a rapid energy surge goes through you causing your body temperature to change abruptly from being very cold to extremely hot in the blink of an eye. This is usually due to the change in energy from the body, a strange feeling to encounter but it passes just as quickly as it came.
Tumblr media
•Vivid dreams/Prophetic Dreams – Our consciousness is shifting between dimensional states which is impacting our subconscious dream state, the spirit world and the material reality are intertwining a lot more than we ever realized possible. Prophetic Dreams and Lucid Dreaming start becoming more common.
•Feeling Disconnected – Your consciousness is wanting you to look within for answers instead of always looking outside of yourself and your external reality. As your frequency shifts, your interests and relationships will change, you attract what you are after all. Your old friendships and relationships will fall away for more soulful aligned relationships. We are releasing our karmic bonds into our soul family. Sometimes we have to let go in order to grow and evolve.
Tumblr media
Guru Pathik: The greatest illusion of this world is the illusion of separation.
•Moments of Elation – Once Awakened you begin to feel more at peace with yourself and your reality. This creates moments of bliss and euphoria by realizing you are seeing over the illusions of separation by knowing that you are never alone.
•A new sense of Oneness – Once Awakened you embrace a deep spiritual connection you feel towards all beings on earth, an increase in compassion and empathy towards others. You start to see yourself in the eyes of others and feel from their own perspective.
•Looking Younger. –  As you clear emotional issues, release limiting beliefs and heavy baggage from the past, you are actually lighter. Your frequency is oscillating higher than before and you begin to feel not only healthier but more lively than ever before. You love yourself, appreciate life more and have a general peace of mind about reality. You begin to resemble the perfect you that you really are, beautiful inside and out.
Tumblr media
•Moving into the Heart center – This one technically fits into Emotions but it is a Mental Shift of consciousness. What happens is your perception shifts from a very dualistic sense of past and future thinking into an empathetic compassionate desire where you begin operating from your heart center. The heart center is ruled by the present moment or our feelings. This enables you to go through a process of teeter totting back and forth between the heart and the mind which can feel like you’re on the bipolar emotional trainwreck express. It isn’t easy but the process of this is to unify the heart and mind together as one.
Tumblr media
•Ego Death – Not as rare as it used to be but the total death of the Ego can happen and be a very life changing moment within a person’s life. It is the point of seeing beyond the illusions of reality and the infinite connection that we all embrace. We cannot rid ourselves of the Ego but we can understand the origin of the Ego and how it transforms our Awakening.
Tumblr media
•Zero Tolerance for Lower Energy – You are drained, you cannot stomach certain people anymore and being around them brings you down further. There is an innate desire to surround yourself around “like-minded” people and healthy relationships. You simply cannot tolerate lower vibrational environments, duality behavior or toxic unhealthy relationships any longer. Your body is longing to move away from 3d dualistic concepts completely, now you are in alignment with the higher energies of the New Paradigm.
Tumblr media
•Feeling Lost/Confused/having an Identity Crisis – This is not only just a feeling of loneliness, it is a feeling of confusion about what is truth and what is real. It becomes not only hard to relate to others but there is a deep sadness when everyone around you no longer understands you. An isolation builds where you can no longer understand yourself, who you are, what is your path or reality itself. It is the essence of Dissociation, where you feel completely disconnected from reality and those around you. It also may even bring up the thought that your entire life is not real or that the entirety of existence is a fabrication. There becomes a deep fear that you cannot deal with material reality as everyone around you is still in illusion. A dark time that is positive in form, this is where the Ego starts losing it’s bearings over your consciousness
Tumblr media
A Desire to find your Soulmate – Symbolically this is a desire to find your divine soul essence of yourself, our masculine to our feminine or vice versa, this has nothing to do with gender and everything to do with Kundalini. You desire to find Your Twin flame, your Divine Counterpart or whatever you want to call it because you attract what you are! When the Heart Center is open and healed we’re able to find the unconditional love within ourselves again. This will cause your will to attract that love outside of yourself, pure unconditional true love.
Tumblr media
•Strong Nostalgia – You become very reflective of the past, not just memories of the past but all of your past lives. When the body releases and lets go of what no longer serves them, they open a door into understanding their hidden memories. People also feel like they miss home or have a desire to go “home” which in reality is the body’s way of telling you that you are missing your higher self or your higher mind.
Tumblr media
•Wanting to Release the Old You – You suddenly have no desire to go shopping even though you used to be a shoe junkie, you can’t stand hanging out with your friends at the clubs anymore and you are flat out tired of being treated the same way your old self used to behave. You are so done with your old material patterns that you might as well put a fork in yourself. “Out with the old, in with the new” as they say, your old material patterns and habits don’t resonate anymore with your frequency and it’s starting to exhaust you. The constant feeling of being tired of old habits or old thinking patterns means you are moving away from 3rd dimensional thinking and playing the victim within your life. This means drama, duality, polarities, past/future thinking and the feeling of “really not wanting to be “here” anymore” are moving away from your life. In reality your old soul is dying, you are losing the grips of the old world and are ready to enter into new evolved consciousness of your spirit being born.
•Jitteriness – This is an overwhelming urge to do “something” and take action but not quite sure what it is, some call this their “mission”, others just feel that reality itself is changing from the inside out. That feeling as if something big is coming…The big galactic shift. The big change that is coming is you.
Tumblr media
Jasmine
Jasmine is known in India as the “Queen of the night” and is associated with the Moon and the rituals of magic and healing. The essential oil is very uplifting, allowing one to access the deepest layers of the soul and its repressed emotional pain. Jasmine enhance intuitive powers and our connection to the Universe. Jasmine has a sweet, floral aroma, yet it is very powerful in stimulating all of the senses.
In India and throughout the Himalayas region, jasmine is a sacred flower associated with love, sensuality and spiritual awakening: garlands of jasmine flowers are offered to Hindu deities such as Kama, the god of love, and given to bridal couples to ensure their love lasts. Jasmine’s wonderful ability to calm the mind and bring balance to turbulent emotions has created a strong basis for the many spiritual uses of jasmine oil in South Asia.
When employed in meditation, a common spiritual use of jasmine oil is to balance the body’s chakras—collection points of energy throughout the body in Hindu and Buddhist practice. As an anointing oil, jasmine is used to faciltate the opening of the third eye chakra, as well as the sacral chakra. The third eye chakra, located in the forehead, is associated with the pineal gland—the symbolic seat of wisdom, imagination, creativity, and clairvoyance. As you might expect, the sacral chakra, located around the sacrum or tailbone, is associated with sensuality, being in touch with the physical body, and being comfortable in one’s own skin. Jasmine oil tends to be quite yang, meaning it encourages outwardly directed energy, helping the practitioner to put themselves forward and be more confident in who they are.

Can the Kαtααng kiss in the “The Ember Island Players” be justified? I’ve seen many people claim that, yes, it can be. But I must disagree with those takes. To explain why I think that the balcony kiss does not present Kαtααng in a very good light— to say the least— I’d like to compare and contrast the Kαtααng balcony scene with moments between other relationships in ATLA.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let’s begin by comparing these two scenes above. On the right, we have what it looks like to be patient and give someone space, even when your relationship with them isn’t at where you’d like it to be at. This is what it looks like to not be pushy for someone to feel a certain way about you.
On the left, we have what it looks like to be impatient and pushy for someone to feel a certain way about you that you want them to feel. And, as you’ll see in the gif below on the left, the balcony kiss is what it looks like to not give someone space when your relationship with them isn’t at where you’d like it to be at.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A common argument that I’ve heard before defending the unwanted balcony kiss is that Katara really wanted it, but didn’t want to kiss Aang back right then because of the war, and how the war makes their relationship extremely uncertain. Putting aside the fact that “but she wanted it” is an extremely gross excuse often used for unwanted romantic advances, the statement is still wrong.
How do I know this? Well, let’s compare Zuko and Jin’s kiss to the balcony kiss. On the right, we have an example of someone wanting to kiss someone back, but not being able to because of the war, and how the war makes their relationship with that person extremely uncertain. Zuko wanted to kiss Jin back, but couldn’t, because of how the war complicated things, and would make their relationship uncertain. On the left, we do not have an example of that. Rather, Katara immediately pulled away from the kiss the moment she realized what was going on. She didn’t lean in and kiss Aang back (which, you know, one tends to do for at least a moment when they want to be kissed) before stopping herself because of thoughts of the war’s effect on their relationship. No, rather, Katara just pulled away quickly.
To add on to that, if you look closely at the kiss, you can see that Katara even pursed her lips together immediately when Aang’s lips touched hers (which, I don’t know about you guys, isn’t something that I think one would do if they wanted to be kissed). Compare that to Zuko leaning in to kiss Jin back, before stopping himself and pulling away from her. The former shows not wanting to be kissed, to the point where you purse your lips and jump back with a look of shock on your face when you are kissed, and the latter shows wanting to kiss someone back, but stopping yourself because of the circumstances of your relationship with that person because of the war.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the right, we see Sokka and Suki almost kissing, but Sokka stopping himself, and Suki apologizing, before Sokka tells Suki that she shouldn’t be sorry. Keep in mind that Sokka and Suki’s almost-kiss would not have been an unwarranted kiss, unlike the balcony kiss. They both saw the signs that they wanted to kiss each other, and they both were moving towards each other. But the moment that Suki realized that Sokka may not want to kiss her right then, she immediately stopped herself and pulled back. She even apologized, even though— as Sokka confirms— she didn’t need to.
Let’s compare this to what we see on the left. On the left, we have Aang kissing Katara even though she didn’t give any indication (verbal or via body language) that she wanted to be kissed. Katara immediately tells him off for the surprise kiss, by reminding him that just a few seconds ago she had clearly stated that she was confused. But Aang didn’t apologize after Katara clearly expressed her dislike of what he just did. He just stared at her and didn’t say anything. And, if you watch the rest of “The Ember Island Players” and the rest of the show, you’ll notice that Aang never tells Katara that he was sorry for giving her an unwanted kiss.
On the right, we see two people who are good at communicating— both verbally and via body language— whether they want to kiss one another or not. On the left, we see a person who gave no indication that they wanted to be kissed (and even verbally expressed that they were confused), and another person kissing them anyway and not apologizing for it afterwards.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The comparison between the two gifs above also addresses the balcony kiss excuse that claims that Katara’s rightfully angry actions in this scene were “just because of the war.” On the right, we have an example of wanting to spend more time with someone, but not being able to because of the war. On the left, we do not have an example of that. Rather, on the left we have an example of literally running away from a person. After all, I highly doubt that the reason Katara was running was to quickly buy snacks from the theater before Act III of the show began.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In both of the two gifs above, we see someone feeling bad about what they did to Katara. Zuko feels bad about betraying Katara and her trust in Ba Sing Se. Aang feels bad about giving Katara a kiss that she did not want. However, there is a difference in how Aang handles regretting his past actions and how Zuko handles regretting his past actions. Aang feels bad about giving Katara an unwanted kiss, but he never does anything to atone for it. Throughout the rest of the episode, and the rest of the show, we never see him go up to Katara and apologize and/or ask what he can do to make it up to her.
Let’s compare that to when Zuko felt bad about betraying Katara in Ba Sing Se. Zuko asked Katara what he could do to make it up to her. He didn’t just sit around with his feelings of guilt. When Katara gave Zuko her contemptuous answers to his question of how he can make it up to her, Zuko took an effort to learn more about one of the answers: bringing Katara’s mother back. He reached out to Sokka to find out more about the situation, and figure out if there was a way for him to help her get closure over the insidious murder of her mother. He supported and defended her right to get closure. He partnered with her on the trip to find her mother’s murderer. He helped get her to the place where she could finally face the monster that caused her such pain for so many years. He stood to the side and let her make whatever decision she felt was right for her. And, as confirmed by her line of “but I am ready to forgive you,” he made it up to Katara.
Oh, and before someone argues that by saving the world, Aang makes it up to Katara for the unwanted kiss, let me just say that it does not. It does not address the issue at hand that happened between Aang and Katara’s relationship. Saving the world is something that Aang did for the world. What does it have to do with Aang apologizing to Katara and making efforts to atone for giving Katara an unwanted kiss?
Feeling guilty about doing something wrong and upsetting to someone else is all well and good, but it ultimately makes no difference of any real worth if you don’t make efforts to atone or apologize for what you did. Which is why I wish that Aang could have apologized to Katara and atoned for the unwanted kiss. But we never see that. This criticism, along with the other ones I already listed, are some of the reasons why I do not think that the Kαtααng balcony kiss is justifiable.

Seems like they really want the attention.
Bryke Confirms Netflix rumors
Don’t you love when Bryke confirms news by trying to one-up their competitors with their own news?
In case you don’t understand. Bryke has a pattern of trying to outdo competition like TDP. For instance, their announcement of the live action happened three days after TDP premiered.
Same with cast updates days after tdp announced the season 2 release date and so on.
Bryke announcing their departure from Netflix after Netflix re-released the original ATLA and LOK in the United States.
Now we have Bryke announcing Avatar Studios five days after Zutara and older Katara, Brian Kim showrunner rumors.
