He was born around 1162.  His name Temüjin (meaning Iron or Blacksmith), the son of a chief within a nomadic tribe in Mongolia.  At age 9, his father took him on a trip to select a girl as his future wife.  But on their journey, they were betrayed by a rival faction, his father killed by poison.  And for the next 20 + years of his life, Temujin endured much hardship and betrayal, as his own tribe abandoned him.  His enemies tortured him, starved him, bound him into slavery by wooden collar, tried to kill him (unsuccessfully), and even gifted his wife to another man as a spoil of war.

And within that time period, Temüjin repeatedly escaped bondage (only to be recaptured several times), learned to hunt/forage to survive in the wild, and trained himself to fight & kill.  And gradually he became stronger, becoming a brutal & ruthless warrior who rarely ever left a score unsettled by death (and eventually rescued his wife).

And as he grew older he became wiser/more open minded, for after having endured so much betrayal, he was tolerant of different religions, valuing more the spirit in each man's soul, believing in meritocracy, as opposed to favoritism.  And in doing so, he united faiths across the land, inspiring deep loyalty in men, turning enemies into friends, friends into warriors, warriors into tribes, tribes into a vast army over 250,000 strong.  

By 1206, Temüjin was appointed Supreme Ruler of the Mongolian Empire and rode across northern Asia, capturing walled cities and castles, sometimes never attacking them, but rather by surrounding and starving them out till  surrender (tactics outlined in "The Art of War").  And with each new territory conquered, Temüjin generously bestowed the newfound riches to his people and not so much himself, for his main objective was to challenge and conquer other empires.

But let's not sugar coat history, during his reign historians estimate Temüjin was responsible for the deaths of up to 40 million people.  His reputation invoked so much fear that cities would often surrender immediately upon his arrival.  And so brutal were his methods that 20th Century Soviet historians suppressed his history, merely describing him as a merciless, barbarian monster.

But when Russian Filmmaker Sergei Bodrov set out to make a film about Temüjin's life, he "started to get suspicious.  I found just an amazing, great, childhood story.  He was orphan. He suffered a lot, he was a slave, he was the under dog.  And there was an amazing love story.  And there was something wrong with this interpretation."

At his death in 1227, Temüjin conquered twice as much land than any other person in world history, bringing Eastern and Western civilizations into contact in the process.

In 2007, Sergei Bodrov's film about Temüjin was released.

Good Morning Warriors.  Today will be a very tough day for all of us, no matter where you are on this planet Earth.  With a still relatively unknown virus spreading across the globe, world economies are in a massive state of flux.  And also, there is now a sudden oil price war, in addition to all the other problems the world is facing ….i.e. threat of automation, global recession, global weirding, animal extinction, nuclear war, my buddy Al who still owes me money, etc.

Hopefully, you have all made a plan for disaster preparedness….and if not, I strongly encourage you do to so today, in some way, whatever way possible.  Tomorrow may be a better day, and disaster may seem far away, but its always best to be prepared just in case.

That said, there will be a mix of emotions as we all wait for these events to be played out.  Every piece of news that comes out good or bad has the potential to elevate us into joy/relief or sink us into dark depression.  And ultimately, it can be very overwhelming, making us feel bipolar, as if riding a mental roller-coaster.  

Well, if it is of any help, there is another take on the Two Wolves Quote above that provides a different perspective which I hope you find useful in these interesting times we live in today.  It goes…

Meaning: don't fool yourself into blind optimism, nor talk yourself into deep despair.  And don't starve either wolf out, or else the hungrier one will always be ready attack the other for the food he craves when the stronger wolf becomes weak.  If you acknowledge and embrace both wolves within you, then you will find balance.

Ok, I realize I may seem a bit all over the place with this post, talking about two wolves, with a picture of two bison males (fighting over mating rights with the female - haha), alluding the Sun Tzu quote more to the battle raging within us all, but I hope you get the essence of what I am trying to say.

And what if the Enemy hid the battlefield from you, as you stood right in the middle of it?  Deliberately kept your forces spread out unevenly?  Cunningly kept you in such a weakened and confused state, that you never even had the chance to fight back?  Pretended to be your friend, when they were really your foe.  Rigged the game behind your back, so that by the time you did realize you were under attack, it was too late.  The war was already over…you had lost and they had long won.

So much of "The Art of War" is about strategy and understanding the terrain, the battlefield, the circumstances you are in, and then coming up with a strategy to win.  But just because you've read Sun Tzu and are employing the tactics in the book, doesn't necessarily mean you will succeed.  

Because it is very possible the Enemy has read "The Art of War" too.  And unlike you, that same Enemy may not ever adhere to Sun Tzu's "5 Virtues of A Commander" like you do.  They may simply have no virtue, despite all wholesome, clean cut, doe-eyed appearances.

And they may have already Devised An Unfathomable Plan against you. It is very possible the Enemy has pulled the wool over your eyes and rug out from underneath you.  Distorted your reality with illusion.  Manipulated the outcome to their selfish benefit.

And if so Warrior, then your first counter move is to let go of everything that you know and abandon all fear, doubt, disbelief.

Give yourself time.  

Don't let perfection become the enemy of your progress.  Persevere.

The traditional apparel of an Ottoman Knight, aka Turkish "Sipahi" - 17th century Ottoman Equestrian Warrior.

There were two types of Sipahi - the "Timarli" Sipahi (Ottoman army) and the "Kapikulu" Sipahi (Palace troops).

Timarli Sipahi were responsible to govern and collect taxes from the sultan's land, as well as provide security to its people. Timarli also worked alongside with the villagers in the fields, but had no right to owning property, only receive income from it.

The Kapikulu Sipahi were the household Calvary troops, serving in the Ottoman Palace and were considered the most organized, loyal, and feared military force. There were six divisions of Kapikulu Sipahi, the highest, most elite being the "Silahtars" (weapon masters). In order to be ranked a favored Silahtar, an Ottoman Solider had to commit a significant act proving their willingness to sacrifice their life…serdengectic (give their head) - i.e. enlist and survive a suicide mission.

Both the Timarli and Kapikulu trained continuously, and were known to be skilled horse archers, with the prowess to shoot while galloping. Their armor and weapons of choice were plated mail, chainmail, round shield, sword, composite bow, arrows, lance, mace, and axe.

In war, on the battlefield, the elite Silahtars were positioned as rear guards, reinforcing the larger, provincial Timarli army flanks. The Timarli served as the mobile striking arm, used to break the enemy's cohesion, by isolating and overwhelming them with numerical superiority, as the Silahtars showered the enemy with arrows from a distance.

The Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, aka the Red Arrows.  Synchronization is a beautiful thing, ain't it?  

To fly in Diamond Nine Formation at 300-500 kts (345-575 mph), with only about 12 to 20 feet of space between each plane, requires a tremendous amount of skill, precision, & talent.  A lot of things must be in perfect order to pull off this stunt, and it's not just up to the 9 men and women sitting in the cockpits.  

For the bigger the object in the sky, the more the weight, which means more inertia, which makes it much harder to maneuver these vehicles so close together in the air.  Thus, the BAE Systems Hawk T1 aircraft's engine must be manufactured precisely according to the spec of its masterminds at Rolls Royce.  And a team of mechanics must make sure not even so much as nut and bolt is over-tightened, or disaster can ensue.  And the essential ground team of support staff must be in constant communication with the pilots in the sky, continually monitoring plane and pilot integrity, weather conditions, the unforeseen.  

Without question, the more people you can get on board your team, working together towards a common goal, the more powerful everyone becomes.  A strong team with unified purpose represents what any warrior, from any background, in any army, from any country is capable of accomplishing.  

For when everyone is on the same page, working in tandem, we become faster than a speeding bullet, stronger than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound.  

And we become an unstoppable force, a thing of beauty...one heck of a sight to behold.

The Divide and Conquer strategy must never be used for self gain, self amusement, or self profit. It must only be employed to combat an evil foe.
