Writing snippets: Tech's Death

Word soup thoughts that came to me regarding the aftermath of Tech's death in yet another AU. Read if you like!

After the funeral at the station, Hunter went with Crosshair to put Tech’s ashes to rest on earth back home.  Tech had made a will, of course, specifying these things.  He wanted Crosshair to put them beneath the tree with the eagle’s nest that they’d watched as kids at the lake that Ninety-Nine took them to.  Crosshair knows the tree.  Tech's will states that while he is currently dead, and thus has little concern regarding how his corporeal remains are disposed, this is for them, not him.  Something something from dust you came, to dust you shall return.

Hunter and Crosshair travel to this place, and Crosshair knows the eagle tree.  A bit of kayaking through the boonies brings them to the spot. When they get there, Crosshair scatters the ashes, and they wait to see the eagles.  They see no eagles.  They make camp a ways off, and it shouldn’t bother Crosshair that there are no eagles, what was he expecting.  It’s been over a decade since they last came here. But it bothers him.  The eagles were supposed to be there for Tech, it was his dying wish.  Crosshair knows he’s not being rational, but it doesn’t matter.  He can’t stop thinking about it. He caves and eventually climbs a nearby tree (nature would have to forgive him for the intrusion of her privacy), and his eyes validate what he’s seen from below.  The nest is empty, kinda a mess.  There haven’t been eagles here for a while. A bird flickers to the branches near the nest.  Its red crown and checkered coat immediately draw the sniper’s eye.  The little bird, a woodpecker, seems unafraid of him and methodically begins to peck at the tree, even burrowing for a moment under the pile of haphazard branches to pull out a tasty grub.  It tilts its head at crosshair, curious, before snapping into flight. It flies away. 

Crosshair waits, and it returns.  He watches it again.

Change is a fundamental part of life. 

Tech would have liked the woodpecker, he decides.

The Bad Batch, Ranked By Emotional Intelligence

Including how they process their emotions and act upon them. This is based entirely upon my own observations!

Wrecker & Omega — Obviously, they’re the two who are the best at understanding how they feel, expressing their feelings, and also reading others’ emotions. They know exactly how to comfort their family members and how to deescalate situations.

Echo — He’s been through enough to know how to compartmentalize, but also knows when he needs to let himself feel things. He’s very similar to Omega in this way, but the hardened life of a soldier and his own trauma affects him just a bit more than her and Wrecker.

Tech — Hear me out here. He treats his emotions like a puzzle that he’s trying to solve. He processes them, but like he tells Omega, he deals with things differently. His bedside manner with others isn’t always the best when emotions are running high, but he’s genuinely trying his best.

Hunter — He feels emotions, big big emotions, but ignores them as much as he can because he’s focusing entirely on keeping everyone safe and accounted for. He’s also had it drilled into him as an officer of the Republic that he has to maintain the soldier’s way of doing things, which means he can’t act out, he can’t let his vulnerabilities show, and so on. But Omega helps him with this a lot, and he grows.

Crosshair — We all knew this was coming. He runs from his emotions like they’re the plague. He’s very close to being where Hunter’s at, but his own trauma and stubbornness eclipses Hunter just a bit more to land him here. Again, he does get better with this over time, but it’s still his greatest weakness. He values being a good soldier above everything else, and good soldiers don’t let their emotions affect them, in theory.
