It's taken me days to try to articulate what I feel about Crescent City in one, coherent rant. Specifically, this first book..

There was SO much world building; I was practically pixelating into Lunathian, itself, watching the buildings rise around me, the river, the people.

Then? The story. Already ripping my heart out in just a few chapters. Now... The story continues. Twists, turns, surprise, and realization. This is NOT first person narration. The main characters hide much of their thought process until it's time for a reveal. We get to be surprised alongside other characters.

Now, let's get into SJM's ability to make all Hel break loose in the final 100 pages. I was STRESSED. I was INVESTED. I was... Completely, utterly, and unapologetically SHATTERED. I've never cried so hard, felt so much heartbreak, anxiety, and hope in such a short span of a book.

I still haven't fully recovered, even after finishing the series. My throat catches in desperate love and devotion amongst these characters. All I have to say from here? "Light it up." 😭🌙⚡✨

🌙Last December I started reading Crescent City. This was the first fantasy book that I read. And I completely fell in love with this vibe, world. The characters are amazing and the storyline is exciting and well written.

Bryce’s character screams feminism and power. The way she coped with everything that came to her way was so inspiring. She motivated me in many ways. Her love with Hunt is so sweet and deep. In the second book I got more Bryce x Ruhn relationship which was so cute and they’re such great siblings. And of course Syrinx was the cutest fluff.

The end was such a WTF moment, Sarah gave me a huge cliff hanger and now I’m just waiting for the next one ofc.

Elriel /Daynight

Since I reread HOSAB before the release of HOFAS and paid attention to details, I became convinced that SJM's inspiration for Daynight is very similar to Elriel. This isn't just because of the opposites aesthetic—shadows/deer, fawn—or the similarities like Ruhn was burned by his father just like Azriel was burned by his half-brothers. Lidia was forced by her father to behave in a certain aristocratic way that wasn't her, similar to Elain's situation with her mother.

I was mainly convinced because SJM used Sleeping Beauty and The Snow Queen as references to Lidia and Ruhn's story, which I believe are also the retellings for Elain and Azriel. Daynight was more a symbolic retelling in a way that Ruhn awakened Lidia from her emotional stagnation, reminded her that she was alive, and made her take the risk to escape for love. For Elain and Azriel, I think it will be both symbolic and an actual retelling where Azriel will be cursed with eternal sleep by Koschei, and Elain will be able to break the curse because of her pure heart and love for him.

Before HOFAS's release, I noted that there would already be parallels between them, and indeed, there were. SJM literally copied the scene of Elriel in the bonus chapter and used it for Daynight. Also, Ruhn mentioned that he thinks the story Lidia's mother told her about the witch and the knight who broke her curse was actually a prophecy and that he was meant to meet Lidia. This is similar to Azriel hinting at the three brothers, three sisters being a prophecy and that Elain is meant to be his mate, as well as "Elain shall wed for love and beauty" from Mama Archeron.

I do believe that Ruhn saying that it didn't matter if they had kids was totally intentional. Also, Lidia saying that marriage will make their love permanent beyond the mating bond. Elriel and Daynight are two sides of the same coin.

Me: Why do you ship Elain and Azriel?

E/riel: Well for starters, he was the only one to go save Elain when she was in hybern.

Me: First of all, Cassian offered first. Second of all Feyre was also there and saved her (what Elain said)

E/riel: Ok but still it was romantic

Me: But it was not. Because her sister ALSO saved her :) Feyre went to UTM and got tortured,SAed,killed people and died all for Tamlin anyhow...

E/riel: Well Madja said a mate knows whats wrong with their own mate and Az figured out that Elain was a seer.

Me: Elain being a Seer was not what was wrong with her. Also Rhysand figured out Nestas power.

E/riel: Az gave Elain truthteller when he had given it to no one ever.

Me: Only because Mor begged him with tears in her eyes to stay back. Cassian offered her first (again) and then Az offered her TT bc he would not have to use it. Not to mention, Elain only took it when Feyre assured her she would not have to use it. She gave it back without a glance

E/riel: Well Feyre imagined Elain and Az as ´´Death and his lovely fawn´´

Me: Okay. Well did you also catch when she said TT is the only connection between them? Not to mention something admirable about Elain is that she is always full of light. What literally takes away Light? Darkness=Azriel. Not to mention, Azriel is death and his home sucks the life from Elain. Not that Feyres aesthetic painting mind matters anything to me :)

E/riel: What about the fact that Lucien thought Elain was crazy?

Me: What about the fact when he travelled all around to find somebody on a quest so dangerous and the only confirmation he got was from Elain?

E/riel: Elain was wearing Cobalt blue the first time she met Az.

Me: Considering Elains devotion to Graysen, there is a high chance of her wearing that color for Graysen because his crest is cobalt blue. Even if its not true, Lucien wears a coat that´s fawn brown (exact same shade of Elains eyes)

E/riel: A smile and blush bloomed on Azriel in regards to Elain.

Me: Dont care. Thats just an action. Although since you say that, did you know that a smile bloomed on Elains face after her father died (who she loved dearly) in regards to Lucien?

E/riel: What about when a charged glance went through Elain and Azriel.

Me: Sexual attraction. Lots of characters have it like Feyre and tamlin,Aelin and Chaol,Azriel to Mor....

E/riel: Well, Azriel jacks off to Elain every night while looking at the gift he got for her.

Me: Dont be shy you dont have to say a gift. You can say he jacks off to headache powder. No problem. Almost like when Nesta slept with multiple men. Trust me, that does not affect me!

E/riel: Elriel is true mates because Az was the only one to smell Eluciens bond.

Me: Bryce smelled Nessians bound, Ruhn and Lidia smelled bryce and hunts bond, Tamlin smelled feysands.

E/riel: Gwyn is a lightsinger because Az chest sparked because of her.

Me: Well than ig Lidia and Bryce are lightsingers too. Get those evil bitches away from Hunt and Ruhn right?

E/riel: There is nothing romantic for Gwynriel

Me: Thats literally just your penny for thought. Why would i care when SJM provided common banter, mate language and history for Gwynriel, and scenes where they challenge each other when she said history,sparks,conflict,and challenge all makes a good couple.

E/riel: Elain gave two gifts to Az. Not lucien

Me: Headphones for Az bc Nesta and Cass fuck so loud? So romantic i cant! Im so glad my girl SJM is saving the good,meaningful gifts for Elucien.

E/riel: Az waited for Elain to come to the table and told everybody to not eat until Elain came back.

Me: he was thinking of his mother being a slave. Thats what the situation of eating when Elain was tending to everyone reminded him of. How his mother was treated. Its not romantic but it is a very sad thing to think about.

E/riel: Azriel loves Elain. He only has not thought about a future with her because he does not allow himself to!

Me: Honestly i don´t mind that you think that! Although that is not canon. Sleeping with Elain is the only thoughts he PLEASURED himself to. Not allowed himself as some say. Again, that´s just your penny for thought. He says ´´He hadn't gone that far with his planning´´ Meaning sexual thoughts is fine but anything further is like nope, nope,nope,nope,nope too far.

E/riel: Elain literally loses her newfound boldness around Lucien.

Me: There is so many more reasons that we could come up with than what meets the eye. Have you considered it was because she didnt know what to do. Or she saw the look on Lucien ´ s face and shrank because she did not intentionally cause it and felt bad? Or maybe she FELT Luciens pain and shared it because of the bond? So much possibilities to think of especially considering we have limited text and not the actual characters POV. Also i wonder how far she will shrink when she finds out about Az and Rhysands conversation in the bonus chapter. Or maybe she heard it already?

E/riel: Azriel actually gets Elain.

Me: The way he literally does not though! When Elain begs the IC not to kill graysen Az says its best for him to be killed in acosf. When Elain says nesta cant make choices for her and then Az says she should not be exposed to the innate darkness even though later we figure out Elain is willing? When Elain says she is not a child to be fought over and than Az says he will defeat Lucien in a blood duel with her?

E/riel: Scrying is dangerous! Of course Azriel did not want her too.

Me: Yet, he said ´´Nesta really should do scrying´´ but not Elain because he underestimates her. Which is the ONLY thing SJM provides to what Az could have been doing.

E/riel: Azriel listened to Elains laugh probably because he loves the sound!

Me: Maybe its because Elain never ever laughs like that around him or the ic He was literally monitoring them which means to keep tabs on someone which directly relates to his fricking job 😂. So many words to choose from and SJM chose monitoring.

E/riel: Az gave Elain a rose necklace.

Me: Ok and? Elain gave it back. She does not want that shit. He gave it to another person. It felt wrong to clasp it around Elains neck but it sparked something in his chest and made him smile for Gwyn.

E/riel: Lucien only sees Elain for his mate but Azriel sees her for her.

Me: Nope. His reason for wanting to kiss Elain was simply ´´What fi the cauldron was wrong´´ and refers to Elain as the 3rd. She is literally a theory or more so a possibility to him. One he has not thought through in the slightest. Also, Lucien was going crazy in hybern in regards to Elain before he knew of their bond AND Elain has not accepted the bond yet he still cares for her.

E/riel: Elain called Azriels scars beautiful.

Me: first of all, its a 50% chance she called his scars beautiful. Feyre said she was not sure which one she was complimenting, the scars, or the big glowing cobalt siphon atop his hand. Second of all, even if it was 100% fact that she said his scars specifically was beautiful, it seems he does not believe it at all. He tries to not to look at his hands. He does not want to taint her with his presence or touch her beautiful skin with his scars.

E/riel: His shadows vanish around Elain and lightens. They also do that around mor who he was in love with for 500 years. Also his shadows are like snakes ready to strike in regards to Elain.

Me: Shadows lighting and vanishing are the same thing. Light takes away darkness as darkness takes away light (another reason why they are horrible together) His shadows are losing its darkness around Elain and Mor. Mor was wrong for him. The amount of pain it caused him to be in Love with her? Want that to continue with Elain and Az? Azriel does not need his darkness to be hidden. He needs it to be embraced *insert Gwyn*

E/riel: SJM would never pass on a good angsty trope like forbidden love!

Me: firstly, the only thing forbidding e/riel is Elain herself. If she rejects the bond, she can be with Az all she wants and NO ONE has a say on that. Not Rhysand. Not feyre. Not cassian. Not Lucien himself. Although she hasnt after 2 years. There is an answer to why. Its not like Elain knows she has to wait until her own book to reject it. Second of all, Forbidden love is the absolute WORST trope to give BOTH of them. For Elain, she has always hid in the shadows of her sisters in the series and the fandom. You really think Elain Archeron always full of light wants to hide in the darkness and play out Azriel´s fantasies? As for Azriel, he has been secretly silently in PAIN loving Mor for 500 years. So you want him to go through it again with Elain? No. He wants the bond nessian and feysand have. The love they share. The joy of being with your equal. The connection of a mating bond. Being proud to showcase it to the world. Forbidden love would just tear them apart.

E/riel: SJM does not write about virgin romances! Plus Gwyn is a virgin!

Me: Yes she can. Gwyn already lost her virginity against her will so biologically she is not going through the bleeding and the actual losing her physical virginity. Although it is a fact she has never slept with someone. The scene where Cassian *ahem* first enters nesta is very descriptive and SJM describes the pain of Cassian entering her......So yes she can for sure write about Gwyn having sex. This is also goes against the statement that Gwyn cant have sex because of her trauma. False. She is interested in romance books and asks Nesta if the sex was good. I think Gwyn would enjoy sex with someone she trusts in and out.

I am so tired of Elriels comparing their purity culture ship to Elorcan and Ruhnlidia, two of MY favorite MATED pairs in the SJM-verse. Just because Lorcan was a warrior and Elide wasn't. They ignore the fact that Elide WANTED to be. She says she wished Manon taught her to kill. She wielded Lorcan's axe. She's not bloodthirsty, no, but she's a survivor. She will do what is necessary. She watched Lorcan torture someone. She left her uncle to starve to death. Lorcan calls her a cunning little witch. Does that sound anything like Elain, who begged the IC not to kill Graysen even after everything??? Gentle grower, peaceful Elain? Yes she lifted a dagger to save her sister, but she's not ruthless like Elide was. It was Nesta who completed the kill. Elain wouldn't have left her uncle to starve to death or watched a man get tortured. She's all about life; if anything, she's more similar to Yrene than Elide. Ruhnlidia??? Just because of the dark-light aesthetic??? Because Ruhn had a crush on a lesbian like Azriel with Mor before moving on with Lidia???? Ruhn and Lidia are mates. And you forget Lidia is the ruthless Hind. Yes Ruhn is dark and Lidia is light aesthetic wise, but personality wise it wasn't like that. Their personalities match up. Both warriors. So why would Azriel, a warrior, be put with a gentle grower, a courtier who is mated to another courtier (Lucien), when there's a warrior, a Valkyrie, right there (Gwyn)???? Also...Elide and Lorcan are mates. Ruhn and Lidia are mates. Something Elain and Azriel will never have.

I saw your combined aesthetics fic and it gave me this idea. I was wondering if you could do a ruhn x reader? With the reader secretly liking heavy metal and rock music but nodoby could tell because she was very shy and sweet? So then one day Ruhn finds out and is surprised and you could maybe go from there?

As you walk to Ruhn’s house from band practice you bop your head to the recording for the new song you rehearsed. Things were going great for you and the girls. You guys had never thought about actually doing gigs, it was just a silly thing Becca started in her garage. It’s been three years of you guys just jamming.

One night Becca’s neighbor knocked on the door. You thought he was going to yell for the music being too loud. It turned out the guy owns the White Raven and wanted to start doing live music on the weekends. The girls agreed and now Illogically Hotter is playing a second gig tomorrow night. You hadn’t told Ruhn yet. Not that you’re ashamed of your girls or your music, you’re just not ready for him to see you perform yet.

Stepping into the house you slip your headphone off your head resting them around your neck. Preparation for tonight’s party was in full swing. Dec was setting up the beer pong table while Tharion and Flynn brought kegs in from the kitchen.

Ruhn skids to a halt in front of you, sporting that wild boyish grin. “Hey baby,” he says happily pulling you into a loving hug. You hug him back tighter burying your face in his chest. “Hey Ru. Missed you.” Ruhn kisses your forehead with a loud smack. “I’m gunna go upstairs and get ready.” He nods at you as you take the stairs two at a time to his room.

Ripping off your sweaty shirt you let out a relived sigh. You went way too hard on the drums tonight. You pull out your oversized Banshee shirt that people always mistake as Ruhn’s along with your ripped jeans. Maybe you will tell Ruhn about your band tonight.

Ruhn plops down on the couch throwing his arm over your shoulder. He’s followed by Hunt, who looks as smug as your boyfriend, Ithan and Flynn who look defeated. Clearly sour at the fact they lost another round of beer pong.

Bryce giggles, “Aww sore losers again?” She teases. Flynn rolls his eyes at her. “You play them and see if you’re laughing after.”

A Banshee song comes on over the speakers. A rarity that the playlist strays from pop or house music unless you get your hands on whoever’s phone is in control. You start bopping your head and humming along, drumming your fingers on your thighs.

Flynn squints at you. “You like this song y/n?” You nod, “Yeah, I’m a big Banshee fan. I love rock, punk, heavy metal, all that stuff.” His jaw drops. You can feel everyone’s eyes on you and retreat into Rhun’s side praying his shadows could swallow you up. “What! I thought you were our resident pop princess.”

You shake your head, a small smile pulling at your lips. “Actually,” you drawl shyly looking up at Ruhn, “you know Becca, Laurel, and Vesper? We have a rock band.” It was Ruhn’s turn to be surprised. You saw hurt briefly flash in his eyes. He quickly recovered, shooting you that boyish grin. The group bombarded you with questions about what instrument you play, how long have you been in a band, and where you’re playing. Ruhn didn’t say a word the whole time. Your heart beat from the anxiety of the love of your life being mad at you.

Hours later you and Ruhn were getting ready for bed in uncomfortable silence. Climbing into bed you let out a sigh. It felt good to finally lay down. Ruhn turns on his side facing you. You try to ignore his gaze that’s burning a hole in the side of your head.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” The hurt in his voice made you wince. Turning to look at Ruhn your heart breaks at the frown on his lips, his usual brilliant blue eyes dim. You reach out to gently stroke his face. “I’m sorry.” You whisper. “I was going to but then I got nervous. Then my mind was telling me you wouldn’t like it, so I don’t know.”

“Baby how could I ever hate anything you do? You’re perfect to me.” You give him a small smile, cuddling into his side. “Thank you. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you.” Ruhn hugged you tighter to his chest rubbing your back. “It’s ok baby.”

The next morning you had made the stress inducing decision to invite Ruhn and your friends to see Ilogically Hotter at the White Raven. You spent the afternoon practicing with the girls trying not to worry about Ruhn watching you play drums and sing.

You did have to take a break at one point becuase of how stressed you got. Becca ran you to the bathroom because you thought you were going to vomit. After Becca calmed you down and got food in your stomach you felt better.

Laurel and Vesper were getting pumped when you finally came out of the empty back office the band uses as a dressing room. "Are you ready y/n!" "Yeah!" You shook out your arms then teh rest of your body to dispel your nerves. Taking a deep breath you decide to let go and pretend Ruhn and all your freinds are not in the audience watching you.

Vesper dragged you into the group huddle to do your little chant that she decided was now the pre-show ritual.

No turning back now.

Ruhn was picking at his fingers in anticipation. He decided it would be best to stay at a table on the edge of the crowd so you wouldn't be too nervous seeing him. But he was excited. The energy from the crowd wass electric.

He swore he heard a few people say that they came back to see you guys again. That made Ruhn smile. Gods how could you keep this from him?

Bryce grabbed at his fingers pressing them against the hardwood table. "Stop that." She said sternly, raising a brow at him. "Sorry, I'm just nervous."

"Don't be." Dec said plopping drinks down on the table. "They're going to be great. Y/n is going to be great. And no matter what you'll support her." Ruhn nodded at his friend as the spot lights started to strobe. The rest of the group huddled around the table taking a drink.

Ruhn didn't take his eyes off the stage for a second. He was too enamoured by you. How you whipped your hair around as you bounced around in your sweet. The prince even made sure to listen to your background vocals. It was rare that you sang in front of him so he was going to cherish this moment.

When the hour long set was done Ruhn raced to find you. He needed to tell you how amazing you were or he felt like he was going to explode.

You were happily screaming with the girls over another successful gig when you sensed Ruhn coming. You looked over your shoulder just in time to see him push the curtain back. You gave him a huge smile that he returned as you both ran at each other.

You launched yourself into his open arms and Ruhn spun you around. Putting you down he held your shoulders to jokingly shake you. "Wow, wow, wow! I didn't know you were so talented! All of you." You stare into his bright eyes, twinkling with happiness and admiration. "Really?" "Yes really!" He pulled you into another bone crushing hug leaving a kiss on your sweaty head.

For the first time in a long time you felt truly like yourself. The fact that Ruhn was not only embracing this side of you, but fully supporting you was more than you could ask for.

For some reason I really think Ruhn would fit the aesthetic of this movie, with his long hair, I can see it braided with some beads here and there, him wearing a white shirt and lather pants, a sword on his hip and his tanned skin from being under the sun for hours.

so many misc amaya headcanons bc i had way too much time to think about her at work today

the court of the autumn king is extremely formal and misogynistic. to that end, to touch a member of the royal family, particularly its female members, is a treasonous offense. only family members, attendants such as handmaidens, and body guards are allowed to touch amaya as the autumn king's wife. she has grown extremely uncomfortable with touch outside of these circumstances, which makes her return to prythian an adjustment in more ways than one. she sometimes stiffens before returning a hug, even from the ic, and is generally the first to pull her hand away from a handshake or move her body to avoid accidentally brushing against someone. it's a habit that slowly breaks as her healing journey in the night court continues.

einar sealed the marriage contract to amaya with a ruby wedding ring that she wears continuously on her left ring finger. the gem is slightly too big for her finger, because the autumn king cared more about the cost of the ring than its aesthetic, and its red color is representative of his court. the ring was charmed by a witch so amaya is unable to remove it so long as she remains married to einar and to send shots of pain through her body should she be unfaithful, a spell she has not discovered yet as she's never sought to break her marriage vows, which she considers as sacred as a night court bargain. she is only able to remove the ring when she is widowed upon einar's death.

when amaya was growing up, she favored low back shirts/dresses so she could easily call her wings and often dressed in night court colors. the blues, silvers, and purples worked wonders with her coloring and she was often radiant. after the plot, she is extremely self-conscious about her scars and adjusts her style of dress accordingly, taking to wearing high necked shirts/turtlenecks. her clothing is chosen for her by the autumn king in modest cuts and in the colors of his court (reds, oranges, blacks that usually wash her out). she will not readily show or talk about her scars to others.

einar did not see amaya's scars for a period of time after their wedding as she was never fully undressed in his presence, often still wearing her nightgown to bed as she feared what his reaction would be. when he finally did see them, she claimed they were from discipline inflicted by morven during her childhood, to which einar replied that discipline is often needed to ensure proper demeanor in a female.

amaya was a virgin upon her marriage, a fact that morven had court physicians attest to when the marriage contract to einar was signed (gross)

after einar abandoned bryce, amaya secretly kept in touch with ember to foster a relationship between bryce and ruhn. amaya believed their children should not have to suffer for einar's ego. she never blamed ember for the affair and she never held einar's sins against bryce. einar never found out about the correspondance.

amaya's magic is completely unique to her and is a manifestation of the night court's power to her outlook/personality. she is able to combine her daemati and shadow magic powers to create extremely convincing illusions/mental scenarios, a power that was exploited by morven to interrogate (torture) political dissidents. additionally, amaya figured out that shadows hold memory (think how water holds memory in frozen 2). she is not a shadowsinger and cannot understand the language of shadows, but she was able to use these "memories" to be able to somewhat teleport herself across distances (similar to winnowing but she doesn't have to have knowledge of the place in advance to use the power). for example, she can use shadows to walk through walls, though she's never been to the room on the other side. this "teleportation" power also allows her to make her body semi-corporeal, a skill that comes in handy when parrying a strike from an enemy.

when amaya uses her magic, her eyes go completely black, a remenant of ancient illyrian magic that has long since disappeared from the world but remains in the night court bloodline. she often carries sunglasses with her to be able to use her magic in public without her eyes giving her away.

i don't identify a mate for amaya purposely esp since she isn't canonically alive by the events of a.cotar and cc (and it gives me more options as a writer for plotting ships with parters), but einar certainly wasn't it. she is only his wife in name for legal purposes so there is no question their children are einar's heirs. she is not his mate, was not crowned queen, and is not treated as a consort.
