“I… Am…” The power was streaming through his body, electrifying every single cell, and it was all Tony could do to focus on his thumb and middle finger, all he could do to focus on saying those final three words. “STARK!!!” Someone screamed, and he managed just enough strength to loom away from Thanos, to look at Starlord who was sprinting for him. “Grab my hand!!” He was too far away, but Steve wasn't. The super soldier caught his meaning before Tony did, probably due to the fact that Tony’s head was being cleaved in two by six infinity stones, but he grabbed the billionaires free hand, and suddenly the pressure on Tony’s head and arm and everywhere lessoned. Steve’s scream cleaved the air as the soldier bent back with the force of the power. No. Not at this cost. Tony would take the pain if this was the cost. He struggled, trying to break their connection, trying to separate Steve’s hold on his hand, but the Captain had a vice grip, and the original pain had passed. He wasn't letting go. Thor’s hand slammed onto his shoulder, and the god roared in pain, but Steve and Tony both released relieved little gasps as the pressure flowing through them lessoned. Peter was right behind him, then Rhodey, then Pepper, then Clint, and Bruce and finally Starlord reached them and everyone was linking hands, sharing the power, the pain, united in blood and sweat and tears, united by their common enemy, united by their common goal, but most of all united because once upon a time, there had been an idea. To bring together a group of remarkable people, to see if they could become something more. The Avengers Initiative. Tony smiled, grim and proud and thankful. “We… are..” He gasped, making eye contact with Thanos. Steve clasped his hand tighter, and Thor squeezed his shoulder in support. Tony smirked. “The Avengers.”
