Send me ‘ 👃 ‘ for your muse to find mine with a bloody nose. for Jack Kelly from Crutchie, formerly at a-smile-dat-spreads-like-buttah
"Crutchie-- me an' some of the fellas are heading to Jacobi's tah see if the ol' man is feeling generous. You wanna---" The newsie rounded the corner where Crutchie had set up shop that morning to sell the morning paper. But before he had a chance to continue, he noticed the grotesque state of her face, the blood pooled around her shirt.
"Jeesus-- Charlie, what happened to you?" he asked, concern flashing across his face. He pulled his vest off and held it over to his friend. "Who did this?" Already, his hand was balling into a fist, ready to storm after whoever was to blame.
'jack has family in santa fe' 'jack was born in santa fe' 'jack has some kind of tragic relation to santa fe' no no NO you dont UNDERSTAND jacks santa fe isn't REAL!!! NONE OF IT IS!!! jack yearns for santa fe BECAUSE he has no connection to it!!! he has no expectations of it at all, he just found a place that was as opposite to new york as he could imagine and pinned all his hopes on it, THAT'S THE TRAGEDY OF IT ALL!!! if jack did go to santa fe, he'd realize all too quickly that this was not the fantasy he built up in his head. he will always feel out of place wherever he goes because the thing he's running from is a piece of himself that he has to reckon with, that's the whole point!! family isn't something he'll just stumble upon by chance, it's something he has to be brave enough to make for himself. his santa fe could've been ANYWHERE. thats why "i'm dead if i can't count on you today" was so gut-wrenching, because he CAN'T count on santa fe. ever. IT'S NOT REAL.
For those of you that never had the privilege to see Mike Faist in Newsies. This is a snip of Mike covering Jeremy Jordan. Mike is playing Jack Kelly and singing Santa Fe.
jack kelly as a young black man, a black kid, has forever changed how i see his character and i will never imagine him any other way. michael ahomka-lindsay and the newsies uk casting directors deserve so much praise for it. it adds so much to his story, his relationship with katherine especially—his line, “i know girls like you don’t end up with guys like me” is so much more poignant. pulitzer’s disrespect in calling him “boy and “kid” becomes so much more sinister. the abuse his father faced from his employers suddenly carries even more weight. like are you kidding me. how the hell did nobody think of this before!!!!
Jack groaned and rubbed his neck as he blinked rapidly and tried to focus on the rooftop around him. The dream had felt so vivid. Then again, most dreams about the refuge were.
"Yeah, musta," he muttered back to Crutchie with a yawn. "Did I wake you up?"
