Miniature dog and khait effigies for a Wardi funeral. These are clay figurines that have been painted and decorated with great care by a skilled artist. Both include real hairs from the individual animals they have been modeled after. The dog is collared, showing that it is a loyal pet rather than a lowly feral scrounger. The khait is fully bridled and ready to carry the deceased in their journey.

It is believed that the souls of the deceased, once freed of their bodies, undergo a month-long journey to reach rebirth in the lunar lands. This journey is full of perils. It begins in the realm of the earth where the soul is naked and vulnerable and traveling through complete darkness. Evil spirits dwell within this realm and may try to capture the soul or lead them astray, and the way is twisting and obscured in shadows. Even after escaping this darkness, the soul still must travel an arduous and winding path through the realm of the sky in order to reach their destination.

A khait and a dog are traditionally offered as funerary goods (in addition to food, water, wine, clothing, weapons, and other needs) to assist the soul in their travels- the khait will ease their passage in their long journey and carry them swiftly, and the dog will navigate through earthly darkness and dense cloud by scent, and protect the soul from harm.

Ideally, one of the deceased's own living khait and hunting/guard dogs will be killed at the funeral (typically the most beloved of their animals, as who would be better company than that?) so that they can have familiar and loyal helpers in their lonely journey. However, there are tremendous class barriers to ownership and disposability of a khait, and well-bred working dogs (while significantly more accessible) aren't ubiquitously available, and many people do not consider captured feral dogs to be a worthy replacement. As such, funerals with full animal offerings tend to be limited to higher status individuals.

Everyday people still need protection on their journeys, and animal effigies can be appropriate replacements for the real thing. These effigies are usually designed with great specificity to represent known individual animals that have already died (often including the animal's actual hair, as seen here). The soul of the represented animal will recognize the effigy as its body, and can be called into the icon so that it may accompany the deceased. These effigies (along with any other necessary grave goods) will be placed onto the pyre and burned along with the body so that the traveling soul will be sent off with everything they need.

Some folk traditions have semi-legendary local animal spirits who will be represented instead of a personally familiar animal. This often develops around a small community 'sharing' one historically extant animal for their funeral effigies as a matter of practicality, developing a sense of attachment to this animal as an aspect of shared identity, and adding layers of legend to the animal's story with the passage of time.

For example, a very popular legendary guide in the northeastern rural parts of Ephennos is Chisnops-Inreña (which very closely translates to 'Orange Son Of A Bitch'), a legendary livestock guardian dog. The animal was said to have been the biggest, meanest, ugliest motherfucker around, but was an unshakably loyal and fierce guardian, as noble as a dog (not the noblest of animals by any means) can possibly be. He is said to have fought off everything from jackals to lions to cattle thieves in his day, and died protecting his herdsman master from an infamous man-eating king hyena, only succumbing to his own wounds when the great beast lay dead. His spirit was later used as a guide in his master's funeral, and local legend states that the same spirit has been seen following herdsmen and their cattle ever since, as not even death could keep him from his duties. Such a dog would make an excellent guide and protector in the journey to the afterlife, and effigies of him are favored in the funerals of northeastern Ephenni pastoralists.

The bullet pierces through her hand before anyone can think, and you waste no time pinning her down and throwing her on the ground, listening to the way something crunches when you make the arrest.

"Jesus Christ. I'm all for evil women but this one just has no redeeming qualities." You pull her to her feet, walking her to the cop car. "Nice try, though."

"You BITCH." She bites.

"Yeah, been called that a few times. It sticks."

"Nice shot." Morgan nods. "How'd you know?"

"She had no signs of torture." You point at her clear skin, chuckling. "At least try some makeup next time before your escape, hm?"

"Like the purple on your neck?"

"Oh, I'll do a better job next time." You stretch your arms, glancing at the rest of the victims. "Are we free?"

"Let's ride back. They'll take care of the rest."

You glance at your ringing phone, answering as you slide into the backseat.

"Hey."

"Hey. All safe?"

"We're all good." You hum. "You wanna get dinner after this? I'm starving."

"Indian?"

"I'm so down." You groan. "A good butter chicken with naan right now sounds like heaven."

"Sounds good." Spencer hums. "Nothing hurt?"

"Nothing. She tried killing Dave, but—"

"She?"

"What? God forbid a woman be evil for once."

You raise a brow when Rossi glances back at you.

"I'll see you in a bit. Rossi's giving me a weird look. I don't want to get re-evaluated."

"Alright. Stay safe. Love you."

"Love you too." You turn off your phone, pursing your lips when Morgan gives you a look.

"So. I love you, huh?"

"Love you too, Derek."

He barks out a laugh.

Ring Theory Continued: Episode 6

Short ring theory summary -> Right hand = power game; Left hand = personal game. Second finger is love/protection of a loved one. Third finger is good/neutral. Fourth finger is no bueno. Pinkie is Chakri 🥰/support.

I may not know if ALL of the rings in The Next Prince actually mean something, but I certainly know that this one does. It was a gift from Charan's dad to his mom on their wedding day.

But alas, it's just placed in Khanin's hand. Not on a finger. We haven't reached that point...yet.

Khanin wants one of these rings.

I want to know what the dark champagne pearl represents.

We already know that Charan's dad gave his mom the white pearl when they started dating.

It represents purity, sincerity, freedom, and loyalty.

And Charan has currently given Khanin a yellow pearl representing friendship and good health.

That means the pearls all have meanings. So...what does the dark champagne ring represent?

In other ring theory news....

Chakri took his ring off when he went to the club! He had started to intervene when Charan got pulled to the dance floor by Khanin, but my man decided to live it up for himself.

The man that approached Chakri has an enormous ring on his third finger, so I'm figuring he has good intentions. I approve Chakri. Go live your best life.

It should be noted though that Chakri didn't wear his ring at all this episode (that I noticed). Maybe because he's not really fulfilling the same role he was in the past. Charan has taken over the teaching. Which always happens in this library because this show delights in teasing me about potential kabedon moments involving bookshelves.

And Khanin isn't shy about letting Chakri know his services aren't needed.

Which...🥺. It's not like Chakri's really got in your way so far. Let the man support your ship! He can help you!

Khanin was playing a similar ring game to last week. Wearing it on the third finger of his left hand when he is operating in an official capacity....

Or trying to figure out how to be a proper royal.

He's still here for personal reasons. And although he doesn't fully understand the power he wields, he doesn't intend to cause harm. As an aside, it does appear the show thinks of him as the golden boy in more ways than just his kingdom's colors.

But when he's alone with Charan? No ring in sight. For either of them. They're not playing games with each other.

And Ramil/Paytai are playing games of a sort 🥵, but they are sincere in their intentions with each other. Ramil might have been sporting FOUR rings at one time last episode, but he removed all of his rings during this one. Paytai and him are both ringless throughout this episode (as best as I can tell). Their true dynamic is very clearly on display.

Paytai saw them ringless in his dreams, and he is very much getting what he wants.

The only royal with a ring at the club...Prince Calvin. So far he hadn't wore a ring as he was hiding his identity and he often hides his hands. But this episode, he popped off by wearing both the blue of the shark clan's kingdom and TWO rings.

I'm assuming the blue really represents that his drunken self is getting ready to be rescued by his blue choir boy. He's now wearing a ring on the second finger of his left hand. Just like choir boy Jay started sporting last episode. The personal agenda involving love has begun.

But maybe it's not even a rescue mission? Perhaps Calvin purposefully went to seek out our choir boy? That said -> I would be lying if him refusing to stay with the other royals and wearing shark clan's colors didn't give me pause.

However, he is wearing the ring on the third finger of his right hand. With the exception of the shark clan leader, I associate that with good so....for now...I'm going to assume that he really is coming in peace. And that he just really hates being treated as a royal.

Speaking of which -> Charan, you failed. He was clearly your charge too.

Like the other heirs, Ava didn't wear a ring at the club. She was being her true self there.

And even when interacting in an official capacity, her gloves were smaller and see through this episode.

She was actually allowed to speak and showcase her personality this episode. It's a shame that if she won, the title would actually go to her dad. These rules really are no bueno.

And speaking of "no bueno" -> I'm still driving my clown car for The Next Prince.

Blue Shark clan has the stars of the crocodile king in their flag, and he's back to hiding his hands. He might be putting on appearances and pretending to be good by wearing his ring on his third finger.

But I think he's got a personal grudge and a hidden agenda.

And I definitely caught that Charan's mom was going out to meet Khanin's foster dad when she left and never returned.

Coincidence? I think not. I said many weeks ago that I thought Charan's mom was killed in something related to the princess's caravan being attacked and Khanin being whisked away.

But the fact that his mom was going to meet foster dad?

The same foster dad that whisked Khanin away in a fake death scheme?

Makes me think the King used violence to cover his tracks and hide the prince. I fully believe the swords are in the flag for a reason. After all, it's not like Charan was without resources of his own.

Guilt could be a pretty powerful motivator to adopt a kid. Although, I'll concede that raising him as a secret weapon is a pretty powerful motivator too.

As always, I don't really know anything. This is more conspiracy theory than meta.

The only thing I really know is that I will be rewatching Ramil pitch his tantrum and Paytai make his move in that tunnel of love while contemplating whether we'll actually ever get the blindfold scene from the trailer.

i think gamzees existence as "the universes living punch bag" "canonically one of the most evil characters in that universe" and "a literal thirteen year old drug addict that all of his friends hated before shit hit the fan because he was irritating and dopey" makes him very tricky to write and uh i dont think he was written well. i think gamzee was a net L in the story. he just kind of existed to plug holes. I liked it!! it was still a bit messy and needed more time or focus to work better, but it was LEAGUES better than morgan's episodes. my 2 pet peeves were "why was 4th sister 4th when she was clearly there before trilla (2nd) and reva (3rd)" (@just-prime pointed out they seem to have run out of inquisitor names LOL) and barriss' designs (partly cause head covering where???) or at least her inquisitor and episode 6 designs. both were so mid but i did a little sketchbook redesign of her inquisitor fit i watched it to heal myself
