albrecht entrati has the most arse-backwards methods of harm reduction i swear to god

...anyway. as ppl may have guessed, i wrote this post before i did the new year's eve do-over. i'm still deeply suspicious of how he knows about the operator and the drifter both existing in the same timeline or why albrecht is interested in tau, but hey, he can't eat all the blame for that - yonta admits to disabling the reliquary drive's safeties before the jump [1]. the zariman wasn't meant to reach tau in one massive jump.

but first! the kalymos sequence. "protect the vessels. repair. rebuild." the thing that leads albrecht to declaring it complete? the drifter befriending and growing close to the hex, and using that trust to save their lives.

i have questions about whether albrecht was in duviri at the same time as the drifter and knowingly left them behind, or if duviri's void nature means it always existed once the drifter created it and albrecht arrived before them. but either way, the "repair" and "rebuild" of the kalymos sequence seems to mean... fixing the drifter's isolation and rebuilding their support network? absolutely insane, i love it.

like he theoretically could've gone about it a ton of different ways, but instead forced the drifter's hand by telling them to let a city blow up and then shooting them and amir for good measure.

this man is literally the most normal orokin we know of.

and what does this mean for my thoughts on his involvement with the zariman? well, he realises in his trip to duviri that euleria created the tales to teach children how to protect themselves from the void, and the tales went on to be a foundational part of the entrati's involvement in the zariman.

you've also got the lanthorns (aka lanterns), which map voidspace onto realspace. this is presumably to make navigating the void safer. there's the exolizers, which are decorated with entrati obols, which reduce void contamination and prevent void cascades. and then there is, as melica frequently reminds us, albrecht's own archives which were used to form the curriculum. you've got the safeties on the reliquary drive - a drive which is still actually free of void corruption, even as it creeps as close as it can get.

albrecht was an outsider in orokin society. he'd been humiliated for who knows how long during his failed void experiments. drusus thought him a madman "fit for the asylum". parvos granum boasted of stealing from him without consequence in a society obsessed with ensuring the orokin were treated appropriately. once he learned of the zariman, would albrecht have had the power to stop it, even knowing what danger they faced?

then there's his line about "the unholy zariman parade". that could be a man who regrets his involvement and what his "all for the greater good" methodology did to those onboard (especially when you consider the zariman wasn't meant to do the trip in a single jump). or it could be a man who knew that zariman was fucked and worked with his daughter to do everything they could to save those onboard from the void?

and he still failed them, to the point that a child had to make a deal with the thing that he unleashed to escape and one version of them got trapped in the "execution circus" for centuries. that another child consigned themselves to oblivion to protect the origin system against that monster. that countless more were forced to become comatose child soldiers, who eventually turned on their abusers and murdered them all. no wonder he talks about repentance and absolution, huh?

They cannot eat. They can place things inside their mouth, and if they close it and obscure the object from view, they can then transport it into their voidspace. This gives the illusion of eating. They do not have digestive systems however and do not need to eat to stay alive.

They don't even need to eat in host either technically, they just feel hunger as a result of piloting a flesh puppet.

a bit of a weird question but im still really curious: are mimes able to taste? would they technically be able to “eat” even though it’s just gonna end up in their voidspace

Not weird, it's definitely a lot different for them.

Whether or not they can taste whatever they touch their tongue to is largely determined by their level of attachment/understanding of the physical realm. Simply put, some can, some can't.

No true form mime can eat in the biological sense. They do not have a functional digestive system, and their neck is not a true passage way. Anything put into their mouth either sits there, or is transported to their voidspace.

A hosting mime can eat if they choose to do so, but they can also choose to be concious of the internals of their host and can transport any food eaten to their voidspace at basically any point during digestion. I mean like that's possible but I doubt many mimes choose to do something like that because like... why? lol.

OH, WELL, RUBS MY HANDS TOGETHER EXCITEDLY

SO! For context I'm gonna have to explain the setting a little bit, so this is gonna get a bit long;

In the session where the aforementioned Void Kidnapping happened, our party was still in the middle of the first story arc, which was about us all randomly (or not so randomly) chancing upon this one really huge and famous city of invention known for a specific kind of metal that could convert different kinds of energy into arcane energy, and vice versa, during a festival of invention held within. The entire city (called Nethermoore) was covered by a huge dome at all times because sunlight has a corrosive effect on the metal, meaning the whole place was basically always held inside a controlled environment with artificial lighting and its own oxygen supply system and such.

Except! Oops! Someone went and sabotaged the thing responsible for distributing power across the city, and now all exits are closed and the city is plagued by frequent blackouts (during which weird magical distortions keep happening), and we all have two days to figure out who the saboteur is and stop them before the emergency generators run outta juice and everyone suffocates! Also, there's a murderer going around killing people during blackouts! It's fine tho we caught them AND the saboteur eventually and saved the city yaaay

Okay NOW we get to the void dimension incident. Smile

So! Weird shit keeps happening all over the place and, while investigating the city for clues, we also keep running into cryptic and ominous hints about us all being in some way tied to each other through strings of fate (which btw. Fate is an actual fr goddess in this setting apparently, and this isn't our first time dealing with stuff related to her. Teehee).

One such instance happens when Button, our kobolt artificer, is separated from the rest of the party while escorting another npc friend of ours to her home in Nethermoore, and there's a blackout again. I don't remember EXACTLY how it happens bc it's been a hot minute, but they start getting barraged by old memories of their life and their missing mother (while miserably failing like every single wisdom saving throw they have to make, which was terrifying to watch), and then Something happens, described as them being pulled along a churning river, and then suddenly Button is Somewhere Else.

None of us still know where this Somewhere Else is, exactly, but it seems like. Some sort of weird ethereal voidspace thats like a pocket dimension of sorts, or at least some form of gateway to speak with an entity called the Assistant (or Auzzie, as Button eventually ends up taking to calling it). It seems connected to Fate in some way, and pulled Button into this space to speak with them; after a bit of a back-and-forth of questions and answers (most of which Auzzie is regretfully unable to answer, likely because revealing certain information could somehow mess up Something Important about our assigned task and our future), the entity tells Button that we (the party) Must stick together, as we are the Conduits of Fate, and also reveals that it has helped other Conduits in the past before, being a neutral party and a being made for assisting people like us. Basically, there's some destiny bullshit going on and we've been set on an Important Task Of Saving The World. Y'know. Normal d&d stuff.

Anyway, Auzzie cannot tell Button very much yet (even though it seems to have A Lot of knowledge about whatever's going on, as well as Knowing things about the rest of the party too), but seems amiable enough otherwise and allows them to leave the voidspace once their talk is concluded. Yay! Freedom!

But yeah our dm put on one of those slowed reverb ethereal remixes of clair de lune in the background for the scene where Button is navigating through the voidspace and talking to the Assistant and that's the context for that LMAO

In due honesty, he’d not much been expecting… anything, let alone a gift wrapped in a crisp and metallic, color shifting paper…  heavens, did anyone in this dark plane even remember his name? 

       Taking time, leaning now against the door, to pick apart each piece of tape with a sort of dainty care, and press open this gift… a smile picked its way across the mage’s face. A pendant… sculpted of silvered metals and delicate as it were– great care had gone into making this jewel. 

      Heavens, now, don’t cry, Gen– oh… dear… 

       Taking the wrist of his sleeve, and lifting it to his eye, budding streams were quick to be dabbed away, and gift in turn curled within the safe keep of his palm, pressed, in turn, to his chest. There was little he could do but smile and chuckle fondly– 

       Though, as he took care in unclasping the curling chain, and the same delicate touch in fastening it about his own neck, he had to wonder just who could’ve left such a gift.
