FOTD #043 : maritime sunburst lichen! (xanthoria parietina)
maritime sunburst lichen (AKA common orange lichen, yellow scale & shore lichen) is a foliose lichen in the family teloschistaceae. it has been found in north america, africa, asia, europe & australia !! it often grows in hardwood forests in broad, low-elevation valleys, or in populated areas.
the big question : can i bite it?? like most lichens, it is inedible, though it may have medicinal uses.

x. parietina description :
"the vegetative body of the lichen, the thallus, is foliose, & typically less than 8 centimetres (3.1 in) wide. the lobes of the thallus are 1–4 mm in diameter, & flattened down. the upper surface is some shade of yellow, orange, or greenish yellow, almost green when growing in shady situations, while the lower surface is white, with a cortex, & with sparse pale rhizines or hapters. in xanthoria parietina, the thickness of the thalli is known to vary depending on the habitat in which it grows. the lichen pigment parietin gives this species a deep yellow or orange-red color."

“Novi Bokanjac” (check the “razglednice” tag) extras - some speedpaints that didn’t make the cut, but I still like.

kuripan - Out there searching for lichens to shoot! 🍄 🌿
Xanthoria Parietina, commonly known as the common orange or maritime sunburst lichen, is usually found on hardwood. For instance, this one I found on some oak trees 💁‍♀️ 🌳
Fun fact: this lichen is a super heavy metal and pollution-tolerant species and can be used as a bioindicator, aiding in air quality monitoring. 🌍✨

Xanthoria calcicola
This foliose lichen grows on calcareous rock and stone work (and occasionally dusty trees) in eutrophic, well-lit, mild-temperate and costal regions of Europe and the Mediterranean. It has a yellow-orange to dark orange foliose thallus forming pleated lobes growing in large rosettes up to 20 cm in diameter. The center of the rosettes are covered in knobbly warts and granular isidia, and it only rarely produces apothecia. The presence of these isidia and the lack of apothecia is the best way to distinguish this lichen from the very similar looking X. parietina which is a lot more common and often grows on bark.

tried to translate some oc names into clanmew :]
lichennose -> fumchoop (moss seemed a fine substitution for lichen, given he was named for his fur texture as a kitten) bramblefoot -> bayabpwyyarr quailflight -> hrrufafa (used rock pigeon instead of quail because it fits her personality more than pigu, songbird, or the birds of prey options- also I love the word hrru haha) galepaw, galestone -> hwoopwyr, hwoobon (since he's named after the moonstone, id be curious to see if 'bon' is in the word for moonstone- if not, his name would use whatever form of stone is in moonstone) longpounce -> prrafu (this one was tricky... I believe a more direct translation of prrafu would be "quickjump" or "swiftleap" but oh well) mudthistle -> sslopnak (is there another word for dangerous/slippery mud?) cicadastorm -> kbkbkrraka (another tricky one, I went for kbkb because I felt it captures the vibe of a cicada)
I love these!! Everyone's creativity is blowing me away!
I've made a couple more vocab words for you, you can choose to change the names you've chosen or not-- the sweet thing about Clanmew is that because it's working with the idea of a translator making conscious choices in what the name will become, they can be translated in a way that's not direct but maintains the vibe, y'know?
Lichens
I have realized that I really need to translate a bunch of these, they are actually super important to an ecosystem and any culture that regularly navigates in a forest would have multiple names for these. For now though, here's three;
Beard Lichens = "Fekfik" A fluffy type of lichen that will probably fit the 'scraggly' vibe of your guy
Xanthoria parietina = Yellow Lichen = Aweewa A hardy, yellow lichen that grows very easily, sometimes called 'shore lichen' because it can set up shop anywhere. Yellow + Bloom = Aweewa.
Candelariella reflexa = Eggyolk Lichen = Ssufik This one is actually really important; this species pops up where animals are regularly laying their marks because it LOVES nitrogen. "Ssufik" is also the general word for "Marker" because of this. Mark an area regularly and eggyolk lichen will start growing there.
Etc
Coturnix coturnix = European Quail = "Wipiwik"
Cirsium vulgare = Bull Thistle = "Kessak"
Deep, dangerous mud that will not hold your weight = "Sslyywp"
Cicadetta montana = New Forest Cicada = "Rre'ef".
I went and got this one for you; I'm sure your fanclan isn't set up in England since this is the only cicada they even have there, but it's an interesting story. They used to be widespread but are now so rare that it's got researchers jumping whenever they hear a possible report. The song is pretty hard for humans to hear and a lot more subdued than other cicadas.
It's also out of range for where BB takes place and ergo Base Clanmew, but hey, figured it was interesting enough to include for you.

Lichens
I love taking photos of them. They are often ignored, but looking up close, they come in all kinds of funky forms.
Unfortunately, there are virtually no books around in here for lichen identification, so I’m not 100% all the following names are correct.
Pics 1&6 - Xanthoria parietina
Pic 2 - Cladonia digitata
Pic 3 - Rhizocarpon alpicola
Pic 4 - Cladonia pleurota
Pic 5 - Parlmelia sulcata

#2505 - Xanthoria sp. - Sunburst Lichens
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of 19 currently accepted species, commonly called orange lichen, orange wall lichen,  and sunburst lichens. Squamulose morphology with distinctive "fairy cups".
One widely distributed species, Xanthoria parietina, is unusually pollution-tolerant for a lichen, but that's unlikely to be an issue in Wellington - any air pollution would be halfway to South America before it could cause any issues.
It's also possible that the lichens are spread by Oribatid mites - Trhypochtonius tectorum and Trichoribates trimaculatus are common inhabitants and consumers of X. parietina, and their faecal pellets contain both viable ascospores of the fungus and living cells of the alga.

Rosace 5 by SoMK by So MK
I decided to let this one go away if someone wants to adopt it. I kept my eyes on her for a while, I find it soothing and balanced. I hope it will be able to bring joy to someone else now.
I made this design with Persian patterns in mind, its beautiful mathematical balance and elegance pushed me to work with plants.
The pigments I used are stable, you will just have to use a standard anti Uv glass to keep it as fresh as now for the years to come, as you would with any watercolours really.
The plants are used are Blue pea Indigo mix, Nettles, Alder gold, and for the two red, I could not use Madder as this pigment is too fragile, I used.. lichens. Xanthoria parietina for the purple and Xanthoria maritima for the red, two different macerations.
The white is egg shell white, slightly tinted by plant inks as well.
I added a border of Rose gold 23kt.
The painting is shipped with tracking with its mount/mat and safely sandwiched between foamcore boards.
