FOTD #043 : maritime sunburst lichen! (xanthoria parietina)
maritime sunburst lichen (AKA common orange lichen, yellow scale & shore lichen) is a foliose lichen in the family teloschistaceae. it has been found in north america, africa, asia, europe & australia !! it often grows in hardwood forests in broad, low-elevation valleys, or in populated areas.
the big question : can i bite it?? like most lichens, it is inedible, though it may have medicinal uses.

x. parietina description :
"the vegetative body of the lichen, the thallus, is foliose, & typically less than 8 centimetres (3.1 in) wide. the lobes of the thallus are 1–4 mm in diameter, & flattened down. the upper surface is some shade of yellow, orange, or greenish yellow, almost green when growing in shady situations, while the lower surface is white, with a cortex, & with sparse pale rhizines or hapters. in xanthoria parietina, the thickness of the thalli is known to vary depending on the habitat in which it grows. the lichen pigment parietin gives this species a deep yellow or orange-red color."

kuripan - Out there searching for lichens to shoot! 🍄 🌿
Xanthoria Parietina, commonly known as the common orange or maritime sunburst lichen, is usually found on hardwood. For instance, this one I found on some oak trees 💁‍♀️ 🌳
Fun fact: this lichen is a super heavy metal and pollution-tolerant species and can be used as a bioindicator, aiding in air quality monitoring. 🌍✨

Xanthoria parietina
Common orange lichen, maritime sunburst lichen, shore lichen
Starting off with this charismatic pal, X. parietina. Easily recognizable due to its orange, foliose lobes and habit of growing anywhere and everywhere, this species is incredibly tolerant of pollution and human activity, and will probably takeover the world soon. In spite of that obnoxiously neon hue, its photosymbiont is actually green algae. Also, it was first described by Carl Linnaeus, you know, just the father of taxonomy, so that’s pretty cool.

AND THE WINNER IS…SPRAY PAINT LICHEN!
Tumblr media
Over 1,500 of you shared in the lichen love and voted for your favorite lichen. Of our nominees for Alberta’s emblematic lichen, the top three vote-winners were:
·         Wolf Lichen (Letharia lupina)
·         Vagabond Rockfrog Lichen  (Xanthoparmelia camtschadalis)
·         Spray Paint Lichen (also known as Candy Dot or Fairy Puke; Icmadophila ericetorum)
And the winner is… Icmadophila ericetorum or Spray Paint Lichen!  This pink and green lichen won us over due to its wide appeal, ease of recognition, established taxonomy, distribution across most of Alberta, and originality amongst its fellow nominees (it’s the only crustose lichen on the list).
Sad your favorite lichen didn’t make the cut? Don’t fret - another prairie-dwelling Rockfrog was chosen to represent Saskatchewan (Xanthoparmelia chlorochroa), and there are a plethora of orange and yellow lichens nominated from other jurisdictions for all of you Wolf Lichen lovers.  Have a peek at the nominees across Canada by clicking on the names below.
Thanks for participating!
·         Alberta: Spray Paint Lichen (Icmadophila ericetorum)
·         British Columbia: Edible Horsehair (Bryoria fremontii)
·         Labrador: Labrador Cup Lichen (Cladonia labradorica)
·         Manitoba: Golden-eye Lichen (Teloschistes chrysophthalmus)
·         New Brunswick: Methuselah’s Beard Lichen (Usnea longissima)
·         Newfoundland: Newfoundland Reindeer Lichen (Cladonia terrae-novae)
·         Northwest Territories: Arctic Orange-bush Lichen (Teloschistes arcticus)
·         Nova Scotia: Blue Felt Lichen (Pectenia plumbea)
·         Nunavut: Whiteworm Lichen (Thamnolia vermicularis)
·         Ontario: Powdered Sunshine (Vulpicida pinastri)
·         Prince Edward Island: Maritime Sunburst lichen (Xanthoria parietina)
·         Quebec: Gray Reindeer Lichen (Cladonia rangiferina)
·         Saskatchewan: Tumbleweed Shield Lichen (Xanthoparmelia chlorochroa)
·         Yukon: Arctic Tumbleweed (Masonhalea richardsonii)

Xanthoria lichen, growing on a cypress tree bark. Become an expert in natural dyes in our online course. It is in Greek, and the price is 50E - see it here: http://bit.ly/fysikesvafes Xanthoria parietina is a foliose, or leafy, lichen. It has wide distribution, and many common names such as common orange lichen, yellow scale, maritime sunburst lichen and shore lichen. Xanthoria parietina produces an orange colored anthraquinone pigment, parietin, that is deposited as tiny crystals in the top layer of the upper cortex. Parietin synthesis is enhanced by UV-B, and stimulated by photosynthates, such as those provided by the green algal Trebouxia symbiont. X. parietina also produces the metabolite 2-methoxy-4,5,7-trihydroxy-anthraquinone. Photo taken by me, all rights reserved. Xanthoria parietina. Also known as common orange lichen, yellow scale, shore lichen, and, the best, maritime sunburst lichen. It is very common and as well as being able to spy it on rocks by the shore, it is often found growing on elder. We haven’t yet identified what the plant is in the image above. SP
Updated 4 May 2020: The plant, we think, is Danish scurvy grass (Cochlearia danica). The image at the bottom is NOT a young Xanthoria parietina as we first suspected but is in fact Caloplaca marina (see above). Phew... SP

2016-01-23-10.47.44 ZS PMax Xanthoria parietina by John Rusk Via Flickr: Xanthoria parietina—maritime sunburst lichen. One of the most widely distributed of lichens, Xanthoria parietina is found on every continent except Antarctica usually not far from maritime influences. Found most often on wood substrates, particularly trees of the genus Populus, it also grows on rocks, walls, and roofs. Xanthoria parietina covers the trunks of quaking aspens (Populus tremuloides) on the west stide of the Regional Parks Botanic Garden. This lichen is often used as a biomonitor for atmospheric nitrogen. It has also been found to have antiviral properties, inhibiting the replication of human parainfluenza virus type 2, according to Wikipedia. Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA
