usually, i hate opening gifts at christmas because as the youngest child it always makes me feel like a spoiled brat and i don’t really know how to react. but this year, the sweetest thing happened. so i thought i would share.

backround: this is my final year of secondary school before going to collage. i could not stand doing something i hated at the school that is closest to me, so i am moving a couple hours away to go to a collage with a music program. i’ll be living on my own.

i got one of those bag-suitcase combinations from my grandmother. for coming home on the weekends, you know?

from my parents i got a new electric bass guitar which is absolutely INSANE. it’s much lighter than my dad’s heavy old gibson and it came with a really well padded gig-bag and one of those miniature amps that you plug into your headphones, because, as dad said: “det er ikkje so jævla moro å leige ut hybel til ein bassist som gjer at det ristar i golvet heile dag” (it’s not that fun to rent out a dormitory for a bassist that makes the floor shake all day)

my aunt gave me a really nice journal to keep all my memories in. as well as a really sweet handwritten letter.

i love my family. there are things i may say or do as a moody adolescent that conflict with that statement, but in the end i really do care about them and love them.

I loved reading this one as it combined my interest in history and science and the work these researchers are doing is so cool! Forskning.no is rapidly becoming my favorite site for Norwegian news and articles.

Be kind to yourself. Don't stress yourself unnecessarily over things that you can change. It is okay to change plans. It is neither a defeat nor a failure.

I finally know when my next Finnish course starts, which will also be very demanding, so I am going to take it easier until then and focus more on rest and learning a bit more Korean and Swedish

A Review of a Regional Library’s Young Adult Collection.

Muswellbrook Library being one of the larger libraries in a regional community I believed it was important to take a closer look at what content is available for the Young Adult community, in terms of its diverse range, and how the library is keeping up to date in a world that is fast paced forever changing. To undertake this task I looked at how items are tagged in our online catalogue and how in depth their descriptions are and how we display these items in our branch.

What did you learn? 

When analysing this collection online, I discovered the range of items that cover multiple themes relevant to Young Adult readers, but these items were difficult to find as the subject tags are inconsistent or the descriptions of items were not there. When looking at the collection in person it was easier to find items as visual clues on their covers and book blurbs were easily seen.

How was the activity relevant to your professional practice working with young adults? 

This activity is crucial to my working with young people as being able to provide not just a variety of items but a deeper knowledge of the collection, outside of cult classics such as Harry Potter and the latest on BookTok, allows me to create talking points between myself and library patrons and showing them that I am interested in the collection.

By being able to engage with the Young Adult community about not only the collection, I would also be able to advocate for their needs within the library and create spaces that appeal to them.

What gaps in your knowledge were revealed and how might you fill those gaps?

I discovered that I don’t know the collection as well as I thought I did, as I didn’t look too long at items that didn’t interest me personally. This review of the collection has shown that there are a lot of books that on closer inspection are similar to other items I have read and enjoyed. Creating reading lists that can be used to assist staff in readers advisory will help familiarise myself with the collection as I will be essentially looking at it under a microscope to ensure that our patrons get full use from the collection.

Diversity in Libraries

Creating diversity within a collection is important when engaging a new and/or existing audience of young people, as they can see themselves reflected in the contents of the collection, allowing them to be seen and be comfortable within library spaces (Booth & Bhuva, 2018; Jiménez, 2018). This collection holds a great variety of content for the Young Adult patrons that use it, and a lot of the items are able to be grouped together for extensive readers advisory lists (Muswellbrook Shire Libraries, 2023).

The young adult community is notoriously difficult to engage with in our community and by creating a collection that is diverse in content but also easily accessible will engage those that do not regularly use the library in person (Hedemark, 2021).

The expectation and goals of my design is to provide something that one can call their home.

Sparks (2017) stated that ‘Ending homelessness requires not simply a stable roof over one’s head—but the ability of all to truly be “at home”.   

Kneck et.al. (2022) defines one of the concepts of homelessness as being roofless and expand on this saying that the emotions related to having a place to call home is a foundation for fulfilling physical, psychosocial, and pragmatic needs.

My design aims to provide not just a shelter, but a space that someone can call home. It will be affordable, sustainable, and sturdy.
