Look I'm real annoyed at people getting high and mighty about whether duolingo works, and here are some hard fucking truths I have to tell you:

If you are a new adult learner of another language, you will never be fluent in that language. Fucking just forget about it. We have this bias towards learning language like it's a party trick, like it is a game that we can win. Not only is that not the point of learning a language, it's also the fuck impossible. You are not going to become fluent using Duolingo because you were never going to be fluent at all.

Now once you're done with that, chew on this part: It's okay to be shitty at things, especially languages, and most people who speak multiple languages are not fluent in all of them. Americans in particular self-report being way worse at languages than they actually are because the only understanding that we have is that perfect fluency is the only way to speak another language. It is okay to only know enough to ask where the bathroom is, because that's how you open a door to learning how to order breakfast, which is how you learn to read the newspaper, which is how you learn to read poetry.

It is okay to just know enough of a language to get by. It is okay to learn just enough of a language to learn how to read a certain kind of document. It is perfectly okay if the minute you open your mouth, someone knows where you're from. Language is a tool and not a trophy, and if you find the teaching strategies of Duolingo useful, you will probably move towards an okay conversational understanding of a language. It doesn't work miracles, but miracles are not the point of learning.

I do have complaints about Duolingo, and I vent them frequently. I think its single biggest problem is that it teaches you to think in sentences and not paragraphs, and as someone who doesn't learn great from immersion, trying to learn without a conjugation chart sucks. I do think that it is better thought about as something that you use to enrich your life on a daily basis, in the way that you enrich yourself by doing the crossword puzzle. But you were never going to sit down and study a language for an hour a day, and trust me on this one, buying a book isn't going to fucking work. I know that Duolingo makes claims that it can't back up, but the idea that it is keeping people from being fluent in a language is also absolutely unsupportable.

And now I am blacklisting Duolingo on Tumblr and moving on with my life, I'm almost up to a 1200 day streak

So the thing is, if people ship characters who are explicitly not into romance (whether aromantic or otherwise), that ultimately doesn't affect me on a level beyond "annoyance" — I can blacklist tags, and blacklist or block people who don't tag it. What I have to ask myself every time I see these things, however, is this:

"Does this reflect how this person feels about romance-averse people in real life? Does this reflect how this person treats romance-averse people in real life?"

Because how someone engages with fiction doesn't have to be a reflection of how they treat real people, obviously — and in this case, I would of course hope that it isn't. But if you know anything about what being aromantic is like, in real life or on the Internet... you'll understand why I'm not optimistic.

Thinking two characters are so cute together that you reject a bunch of their characterization to make it happen is just annoying, not a crime! But the second you make the leap to telling a real human person things like:

"I don't care how much you say you're not interested, because you just won't realize that you and X would make such a cute couple,"

or:

"I don't care how much you say you're not interested, because you're clearly just in denial which the Right Person has to come along and fix,"

or:

"But — but — but not falling in love is just so tragic! I want you to be happy, not sad and lonely your whole life!"

like the rationales that apparently motivate so many people to ship? Then that has crossed the line into harming real people.

I don't actually think that shipping aromantic characters is the primary cause in the cause-effect diagram, when it comes to the correlating the shipping with "likelihood to say these terrible, invalidating, autonomy-undermining things to real people." Precisely, I don't think it's a cause to a meaningful degree when you compare with the opposite direction — I think people who say these things to real aromantics (or anyone else who just isn't interested!), because of what they think about these real people, are in turn more likely to think amatonormative things about fictional characters. I think that there exists a feedback loop to some extent, because fiction can influence people's beliefs to some degree, but it's not symmetric. Real-life amatonormativity causes mass amatonormativity in fandom spaces.

So... at this point, do you see why aromantic people in fandom get a little defensive about aro characters, and about other characters who overlap with aro experiences? You see why we get kind of pissy when people very selectively throw a very specific part of their characterization out the window? You see why we maybe don't want to associate with those people? Why it makes us so uncomfortable?

"Stop shipping romance-repulsed characters," in my opinion, is a understandable outcry from the community that I obviously sympathize with — but it nevertheless conceals the core of the issue, especially from non-aromantics who aren't living with amatonormativity shoved down their throats at all times, and therefore might not be able to read between the lines. At the core, this isn't actually a debate about the morality of shipping in fiction, despite overlap with that discourse on the surface.

The real cry for change isn't "stop shipping that character." It's "start accepting me for who I am, without trying to either undermine or mourn it at every opportunity." Because at the moment, the overlap between people who erase fictional aromanticism and real aromanticism is significant — and even where they don't overlap, you know what? Romance-averse folks just trying to live in peace can't fucking tell the difference.

Excluding Sonic and MLP, was there ever an instance where you so involved in a fandom that all your initial feelings go from enthusiasm to complete jadedness because of how hostile it got? Then once you try get back in it again, you couldn’t muster up any feelings due to those bad experiences?

I’ve been feeling like that with Star Wars lately and I think the problem was that I failed to adhere to that kind of advice back when I was 15 with The Force Awakens.

I get that fandom isn’t everything and you shouldn’t let it dictate your life, but it sucks knowing how it can just well… “break” you like that.

i can definitely say i've soured on fandoms in the past, but i'm not sure it's ever quite gotten to the point that it's made me sour on the associated media. like, even after disengaging from much of the wider mlp fandom due to the huge and vocal contingent of reactionary bronies, i still kept watching and enjoying the show and reblogging fanart. it wasn't the show's fault that a bunch of its fans were annoying libertarians, and i wasn't gonna let those assholes take something i enjoyed away from me

but i also haven't been one to engage with capital f Fandoms for like... the better part of a decade now, so fandoms are rarely a factor in me enjoying or not enjoying a thing. instead of feeling some obligation to participate in the Fandom as a whole, i just have my little niches with like-minded fans and ignore the rest as best i can. there will always be toxic or otherwise annoying fans in every fandom, and i am in no way obligated to pay attention to them just because we share a common interest. when i watched succession i did not feel the need to engage with The Succession Fandom and argue peoples' takes on shiv or whatever. i just watched the show

i do get that it can be harder to escape from these conversations with bigger franchises, though. like, with star wars in particular, the extremely heated arguments can be kind of inescapable on social media whenever something new comes out. but i don't know. you've just gotta find ways to shut that out. use blacklists, unfollow people, block people, look at algorithmic feeds less, don't look at the reddit, etc. sometimes the answer really is just to log off

There's been a sharp uptick in people saying "just block!" or "just don't read it!", and this kind of misses the point of the submissions. Even IF you do those things, it doesn't change the fact a large portion of fan content is that stuff, and it CAN be annoying if it's all you ever see. And having been there and done that with the blocking, and not reading, it's a shitty feeling if you do all your blocking digilence and blacklist as much as posisble, and exhaust the tags, and then find yourself with no fresh content. And producing stuff just isn't up my alley all the time. I have cognitive problems, so sometimes, I just can't put my writing gloves on.

Will I go up to people and bitch? Of course not. That should be implicit in these asks yet somehow, we have to deal with the revolving door repetition of "person makes complaint, person wags a stern finger at them". Why? Beats me.

I've submitted a few things about people doing certain stuff that annoys me, too, and I feel like the embodiment of the "I'm in danger" meme. I can't wait, despite having an ample block list, tag blacklist, xkit, and AO3 filtering know-how, to get my own version of the "just don't read it" comment.

(That was sarcasm. I can wait. Because people should know better. Stop invalidating people for sending opinions in to an anonymous vent blog, ya numpties.)

🎀Agere Gangle: Its kind of obvious and she's not oblivious to it or in denial. She loves agere and finds it comfty and safe. She loves to draw for hours and have playdates with Pomni (she actually convinces Pomni its ok and to do it.)

I HC her caretaker as Zooble, who can be romantic or platonic! I just think Zooble would be a good caretaker for her.

📐Caretaker Zooble: Zooble is...meh about it on the surface. They don't care and they don't think they need to be so public about it. But once in the headspace, they're kind of like...a cigerette mom? Where they're sarcastic about everything, and they question almost all of your choices with a specific type of judgementalness...but they really care and if anyone (Jax) fucks with their baby, it's gonna go down.

Having Gangle as their little really opens up a protective side they didn't know they had in them. Beating the shit outta Jax becomes a more common occurence.

🤹🏻‍♀️Agere Pomni: Pomni is def in denial, and it takes a LOT of convincing from Gangle (and gentle coaxing from Ragatha telling her it's ok) to really let themselves get into it. She is very shy and anxious about it. At first she was paranoid about others finding out (namely Jax), but one Jax finds out and she becomes accustomed to...him, she really gets into. I feel Ragatha would be the best caretaker, whether platonic or romantic (altho I personally lean towards romantic!)

🔪Caretaker Ragatha: (Knife emoji is for a few reasons haha) I've seen everyone under the sun HC Ragatha as a caretaker...and so they've pretty much already said everything and I agree! Gentle, loving, sweet, but also firm and no nonsense. Her and Jax get into a LOT of fights over the littles...like, a lot. It's like watching two parents at a sports event scuffle over whose kid is better.

♟Grandpa Kinger: I HC Kinger as a grandpa figure. He isn't really a caretaker, but he spoils the littles and plays along with everyone whether he actually knows whats going on or not. Def lets them hide in his pillow fortress, whether to play in, sleep in, or be naughty and hide from their caretakers in. Teaches them about insects...plays silly games with them...etc.

🐇Caretaker Jax: OK...this one is purely for me and I have a lot amusing scenarios with Jax in which I think he'd be a fun and unique type of caretaker...So hear me out...(Since I don't see him as a caretaker for anyone in the circus, section will be xreader, sorry! I made him a caretaker for me, but if anyone does read this and enjoys it...here you go.)

It'd start with him finding out about you being an agere. And in typical Jax fashion, he would mock, berate, and tease the hell out of you every single chance he got. He would def make you cry and be paranoid, because he would go through your room and nitpick anything and everything he found.

Slowly though, and I mean SO slowly you wouldn't even notice it was happening...he would insert himself as your caretaker. Like, I'm talking he would just find amusement in teasing you and playing the part, making you upset and then saying shit like "what, aren't I a good daddy?" when he "helps" you fix the problem he caused...or sushing you by sticking a paci in your mouth, or threatening to spank you if you annoy him just a tad.

He would eventually just. Go to the playdates and sit between Zooble and Ragatha and just...start pretending he's your parent. Behind your back. You wouldn't realize he's doing this or talking about you in this way for awhile. You'd only realize it one day, when you Pomni and Gangle are having a fun competition, and you hear Jax yell at the others about how "his kids the best and gonna win", or some sports dad shit.

You don't know how to confront him, TBH...I'll let you insert how you'd personally confront him.

He's super teasing, loves having excuses to "punish" you (usually puts you in a poorly made baby jail), and acts like a mix between a deadbeat dad who only intercepts when he feels like it, and a protective dad who feels like he has to fight everyone about you being better than all the other "brats".

(Sorry the Jax part is so long, I just have lots of feelings about it...and IK the fandom would see "caretaker Jax" and laugh at how absurd that is which is fair, it's meant to be absurd! That's part of the fun and why I enjoy the idea so much.)

Anyways...yeah...that's it...just need HCs for Caine and Bubble and I'll be set....Sorry for how long this is and if you for some reason decided to read it...wow.

PLEASE REBLOG THINGS. it's the main form of engagement here. there is no penalizing for spam interaction, most people are not looking at your blog directly, and it is the main way people find you and you find good content to follow. for original content like fanart and fanfic, it also REALLY helps people out. likes are better for like, personal posts, and for storing things for later. also, it doesn't matter if you blog is a jumble of things - it's yours, nobody cares, and that's kind of the purpose of the site

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A PROFILE PHOTO, BANNER PHOTO, AND UNIQUE URL (that isnt like a bunch of numbers or something), or else people will think you are a bot and block you. you don't have to do anything fancy, you can use the default tumblr theme on your blog itself, but just make sure you look like a real account PLEASE

DO NOT CENSOR WORDS. much like on twitter, if you censor a word for a trigger, it will do the opposite of what you want - people's blacklist and mute functions won't work if the word isn't spelled out in the tags or the text of the post. also there isn't post suppression here.

Don't like your dashboard? Getting bored? Feel like your community is getting annoying? JUST FOLLOW MORE PEOPLE (and maybe unfollow some. a block and an unfollow are always ok). nobody cares, or can see about your follow ratio, and it'll help your dashboard feel more lively (you'll also not give as much of a shit about petty dramas). the follow limit is 5000 last i checked

keep your comments to the tags (unless it's like....really funny or adding something good? use your best judgement). the tags are helpful for subject matter, but you should also use them to talk as like side commentary!

Close your ask box to anons and don't share personal information if you don't want to. hi anon, i thought about this message for a while, actually, because I have a ton of sketches that I kind of want to share but never do - out of fear of being annoying and spamming those who follow this blog.

On one hand I'm inclined to say "unfollow me, if you dont want to see my stuff", but you DO want to see it - just not the sketches.

I apologize for not tagging them as such, #sketch, but that's solely because tumblr is currently fucking me over. if i add more than 4-6 (depends on the post, but currently it's down to 4 :( tags) tags, then my artwork will not show up in search anymore. and without search you don't get much interaction anymore since so many people don't reblog etc. As soon as that works again, I will again start tagging sketches as sketches and then you can blacklist that tag.

On the other hand I feel genuinely sorry, because, again, this has been my fear all the time already. I do post only sketches that i really like and that I feel are...worth your time, I guess?

But then, it's pretty easy to just scroll or swipe to move over a short post with a drawing, I think. the level of inconvenience caused by a silly sketch shouldn't be that big.

I don't know, I'm sorry if it bothers you and I will continue to think thoroughly before posting them, but there will be more sketches in the future.

I had to go watch renegade maleshep with Jack so i can get the vibes right and my god, I am so happy I picked femshep bc the male voice acting is very...stoic potato with angry eyes drawn on it. But I also it gave me a different perspective on her character. Kelly mentions how avoiding having sex with Jack is the way to gain her respect. Okay goals for therapy, if I can find someone who can do this lmao. I can’t believe I’m posting this.

1. Figure out how to stop being so insanely jealous and sad about other people’s ability to connect with people sexually and romantically. I think this ties into the massive FOMO I get about people having interests/hobbies/etc that I don’t, like I have literally considered blacklisting posts about fiber arts because people who can enjoy things I don’t are better than me

2. Figure out how to get past the fear that I’ll put a bunch of time and effort into talking to a new person and they’ll turn out to be just okay or maybe kind of annoying and I won’t know how to break it off. This is one of the things that keeps me from making friends irl. I’m not afraid of being hurt I’m afraid of being kind of uncomfortable and bored (and then still lonely at the end of it)

3. I should probably learn how to make my house look less disgusting but I care about that so little, especially since no one’s ever over

4. It probably takes me hours and hours to fully wake up for some kind of medical reason but maybe a therapist can finally help me fight past the HEAVY sleep inertia so I don’t call out of work last minute and go back to sleep? Or fall asleep at my desk so much that kids start asking me about it
