JOHN CURRIN Memorial
September 14–October 30, 2021 541 West 24th Street, New York __________ There’s the passing moment, and then there’s eternity. Two different kinds of time in one painting. —John Currin Gagosian is pleased to present Memorial, an exhibition of new paintings by John Currin. This is his first solo exhibition at the gallery in New York since 2010. Sophisticated in technique and perverse in subject matter, Currin’s portraits conflate high and low culture in a teasing blend of satire and homage. His figures—predominantly female and often wildly exaggerated—have diverse sources, from pornographic pinups to old master paintings. In their extreme mannerism, they combine the beautiful and the grotesque, the sacred and the profane. A series of startling new paintings begun in 2020 finds Currin bringing his musings on intimacy, eroticism, and feminine and masculine identities into a fresh context that expands his repertoire of art historical references while returning to the explicitly sexual imagery of his earlier work. In these so-called “memorials,” statuary figures are rendered in alabaster tones; warm flesh is replaced with cold trompe l’oeil stone in a confrontation between the sordid and the stately that diverts the traditional medium of public art to unexpected ends. Currin uses grisaille, a monochrome technique identified with Jan van Eyck and other artists, to evoke the texture of marble. He has spoken of the method as imparting to figures a funerary aspect, suggesting a meditation on death—or the demise of eroticism—and a look back at his own earlier work.
Pinup (2021) depicts a solitary female nude draped in rags and with her arms raised provocatively behind her head. Her gaunt contours, however, undermine the curvaceous archetype suggested by the painting’s title; and rather than being tantalizingly available, she is contained within a boxlike niche. Sunflower (2021) also isolates its female subject within the contained space of an alcove, with only the large red flower that she holds beginning to escape its painted confines. In Mantis (2020), one woman perches atop another in an awkward pyramidal pose borrowed from an erotic comic book that also suggests the angular form of the titular insect. The work takes further cues from van Eyck’s Annunciation Diptych (ca. 1433–35) by depicting a knee and a foot that project beyond the frame. Mantis, like many of these new works, engages with Northern European Mannerism, a movement known for its juxtaposition of dramatic, stylized poses with architectonic solidity. Reanimating the aesthetic of Lucas Cranach the Elder and Cornelis Engebrechtz, Currin brings dynamic, historicized figures into contact with a distinctly modern view of sexuality and the human body. He further complicates his graphic subject matter by giving many of the central figures the facial features of his wife, the artist Rachel Feinstein, a perpetual muse throughout his career. Through this visual invocation of his most enduring subject and model, Currin’s paintings prompt a complex entanglement of personal, societal, and historical narratives. In conjunction with Memorial, an interview with the artist by Natasha Stagg will appear in the Fall 2021 issue of the Gagosian Quarterly. John Currin was born in Boulder, Colorado, and lives and works in New York. Collections include the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; Art Institute of Chicago; Des Moines Art Center, IA; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Tate, London; and Centre Pompidou, Paris. Exhibitions include Works on Paper, Des Moines Art Center, IA (2003, traveled to Aspen Art Museum, CO); Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (2003–04, traveled to Serpentine Gallery, London; and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York); DHC/ART, Montreal (2011); John Currin meets Cornelis van Haarlem, Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem, Netherlands (2011–12); Paintings, Museo Stefano Bardini, Florence, Italy (2016); and My Life as a Man, Dallas Contemporary (2019). _____ John Currin, Mantis, 2020 (detail), oil on canvas, 68 × 36 inches (172.7 × 91.4 cm) © John Currin. CURRENTLY // SEMI-ACCEPTING NEW WRITING PARTNERS
i am back again to cause a ruckus. since i have a little bit more free time coming up, i am going to try to pick up a couple more plots. i have listed below some really basic plots i’m looking for, faceclaims i’m wanting to use and some i’m wanting to play against. here is also a link to my current muses, and i am happy to plot with anyone listed as available.
**if we had plotted before, please feel free to message me if you would like to pick our plot back up!!
if you are interested in any of these (plots or fcs - i am always up for plotting something not on this list) you can message me (here or discord - thedrewdawg#1337). i will typically play a male or nonbinary, though i do have a few female muses i’d be interested in plotting with. i rp on both tumblr (via my mumu writing blog) or on discord.
i am also up for platonic/family relationships too! also very interested in 2x2 or 3x3 plots to allow for relationship development outside of just ships.
putting this under the cut because it got way too long :)
classic hateship. we hate each other for some reason or another but oops there’s also MASSIVE sexual tension and we can’t keep our hands off of each other. bonus points if they are both 'heartless’ but they are learning to trust each other with their hearts.
workplace angst. i have been watching too much greys tbh, but i love the dynamics of people who have demanding jobs and work a lot and the job and their coworkers are basically like all they really have going on. would be cool as a mumu, but fine as a solo plot too
angst avenue. something super angsty like this because i am a masochist. honestly anything super heartwrenching i’m probably all about.
ghosts. idk just haunting, maybe someone falls in love with a ghost. love a spooky romance. or like ghost hunters? i’ve been wanting to try out some more horror-esque stuff.
secret relationships. who doesn’t love a secret relationship? maybe you are my best friend’s ex that he’s still hung up on but we are really good together.
ASSASSINS. we love a good assassins plot. and they don’t kill each other because, well, they are in love. maybe they used to work on the same side and one of them defected?? ugh idk just give me some badasses with drama and lots of love.
post-apocalyptic. this has been on my wanted list for a while but ya know the basic there are zombies taking over the world stuff.
slice of life anything really. something that just explores dynamic relationships ya know.
FACES I WANT TO USE: winston duke, oscar isaac, alfonso herrera, elliot knight, michael evans behling. rahul kohli, aaron tveit, lakeith stanfield, ross butler, ryan reynolds, chris wood, avan jogia, charles melton, tom hardy, daniel kaluuya, robert pattinson, nick sagar, michael ealy, chris hemsworth, danny pino, theo james, rege jean page, henry cavill, sebastian stan, trevante rhodes, jack falahee, jordan calloway, leo dicaprio, matt czuchry, noah centineo, chris pine, manish dayal, and ALWAYS zac efron or dan stevens
FACES I WOULD LIKE AS OPPS: FLORENCE PUGH ALWAYS, samantha logan, gemma chan, candice patton, sarah michelle gellar, rachel weisz, aja naomi king, alexandra breckinridge, constance wu, dove cameron, kerry washington, aj cook, adelaide kane, aisha dee, odette annable, inbar lavi, lily james, camila mendes, issa rae, dakota johnson, phoebe tonkin, natasha liu bordizzo, lucy hale, nathalie kelley, laura harrier, halston sage, nina dobrev, tessa thompson, virginia gardner, shelley hennig, freema agyeman, hilary duff, jamie chung, meghan markle, madelaine petsch, lana condor, naomi scott, alicia vikander, shay mitchell, sydney park, maia mitchell, vanessa morgan, elizabeth lail, nicole beharie, becky g, chloe bennet, blake lively, sophia bush
OKAY THOSE ARE LOTS OF OPTIONS and tbh i’m not that picky, these are just the faces i’ve been wanting to use/have as opps for a long time.

Women’s rights activists like Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Betsy Ross, who championed gender equity, didn’t feel the same about race. While many white suffragists worked to help eradicate the institution of slavery, they did not work to ensure that former slaves would have citizenship or voting rights.
“Black women were not accounted for in white women’s push for suffrage. Their fight wasn’t about women writ large. It was about white women obtaining power – the same power as their husbands, black women and black men be damned,” says Howard University Assistant Professor Jennifer D. Williams.
Stanton and Ross and other high-profile leaders in the movement didn’t support the 14th and 15th amendments, which granted former slaves citizenship rights and gave black men voting rights. Given this chasm, a black women’s suffrage movement developed alongside the mainstream movement.
“There was a concerted effort by white women suffragists to create boundaries towards black women working in the movement,” says historian and author Michelle Duster. “White women were more concerned with having the same power as their husbands, while black women saw the vote as a means to improving their conditions.”
Some black suffragists you should know
Sojourner Truth (About 1797-1883)
Born into slavery as Isabella Baumfree, she gained her freedom in the 1820s and supported herself through menial jobs and selling a book written by Olive Gilbert, “Narrative of Sojourner Truth: a Northern Slave, Emancipated from Bodily Servitude by the State of New York in 1828. At the 1851 Women’s Rights Convention held in Akron, Ohio, Sojourner Truth delivered what is now recognized as one of the most famous abolitionist and women’s rights speeches in American history, “Ain’t I a Woman?” In 1872, Truth was turned away when trying to vote in the U.S. presidential election in Battle Creek, Michigan.
Harriet Tubman (About 1820-1913)
Tubman, whose birth name was Araminta Ross, is commonly known as an emancipator who led hundreds of slaves to freedom along the underground railroad. She also was a staunch supporter of women’s suffrage, giving speeches about her experiences as a woman slave at various anti-slavery conventions, out of which the voting rights movement emerged.
Coralie Franklin Cook (1861-1942)
Cook founded the National Association of Colored Women and was known as a committed suffragist. In 1915, she published “Votes for Mothers” in the NAACP magazine The Crisis discussing the challenges of being a mother and why women need the vote.
Angelina Welde Grimke (1880-1958)
A well-known feminist in the District of Columbia, Grimke was a journalist, playwright, poet, lesbian, suffragist and teacher. Grimke wrote for several journals such as Margaret Sanger’s Birth Control Review. Educated at Wellesley College, Grimke’s literary works exposed her ideas about the pain and violence in black women’s lives, and her rejection of the double standards imposed on women.
Charlotta (Lottie) Rollin (1849-unknown)
After the Civil War, the woman suffrage movement split into two separate organizations: the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA) —a more radical group and the more mainstream American Woman Suffrage Association (AWSA). Rollin joined the AWSA. During Reconstruction, Rollin became active in South Carolina politics working for congressman Robert Brown Elliott. Rollin spoke on the floor of the South Carolina House of Representatives in 1869 in support of universal suffrage. By 1870, Rollin chaired the founding meeting of the South Carolina Woman’s Rights Association and was elected secretary. Several of Rollin’s family members — sisters Frances, Kate and Louisa also were active in promoting women’s suffrage at both the state and national levels.
Mary Ann Shad Cary (1823-1893)
Cary was perhaps the first black suffragist to form a suffrage association. During the 1850s, she was a leader and spokesperson among the African American refugees who fled to Canada after passage of the Fugitive Slave Act in 1850. In 1853, she founded the Provincial Freeman, a newspaper dedicated to the interests of Blacks in Canada. Cary spoke at the 1878 convention of the NWSA applying the principles of the 14th and 15th Amendments to women and men. She called for an amendment to strike the word “male” from the Constitution. In 1871, Cary unsuccessfully tried to vote in Washington, but she and 63 other women prevailed upon officials to sign affidavits attesting that women had tried to vote. In 1880, she organized the Colored Women’s Progressive Franchise Association, which promoted suffrage and educated people on finance and politics.
Gertrude Bustill Mossell (1855–1948)
A journalist, Mossell, wrote a women’s column in T. Thomas Fortune’s newspaper, The New York Freeman. Her first article, “Woman Suffrage” published in 1885, encouraged women to read suffrage history and articles on women’s rights.
Ida B. Wells (1862-1931)
Wells, who worked with white suffragists in Illinois, founded the Alpha Suffrage Club, the first suffrage group for black women. They canvassed neighborhoods and educated people on causes and candidates helping to elect Chicago’s first black alderman. In 1913, Wells and some white activists from the Illinois delegation traveled to Washington to participate in the historic suffrage parade where women gathered to call for a constitutional amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote. Black suffragists were initially rejected from the event. Wells and other suffragists including white suffragists like Stanton wrote letters asking the parade to allow black women to participate. Event leaders acquiesced, requiring black suffragists to march in the back of the parade to assuage the feelings of white women in the movement who did not want them there. Despite the conditions, black suffragists participated. However, Wells refused to march at the back.
Mary Church Terrell (1863-1954)
In 1896, Terrell and fellow activists founded the National Association of Colored Women and Terrell served as the association’s first president. After the passage of the 19th Amendment, Terrell turned her attention to civil rights.
Anna Julia Cooper (1858-1964)
Anna Julia Cooper was a prominent African American scholar and a strong supporter of suffrage through her teaching, writings and speeches. Cooper worked to convince black women that they required the ballot to counter the belief that ‘black men’s’ experiences and needs were the same as theirs.
Rosa Parks (1913-2005)
Known as the “Mother of the Civil Rights Movement,” because of her role in the Montgomery Bus Boycott, Parks continued to work for civil rights which included voting rights. Parks served as an aide to Congressman John Conyers and used her platform to discuss many issues, including voting rights.
Charlotte Vandine Forten (1785 –1884)
An abolitionist and suffragist, Forten came to Washington in the late 1870’s with her husband, James Forten, a wealthy sail maker and abolitionist. She was a founder and member of the interracial Philadelphia Female Anti-Slavery Society, many of whose members became active in the women’s rights movement.
Harriet Forten Purvis (1810 – 1875)
Daughter of wealthy sailmaker and abolitionist reformer James Forten and Charlotte Forten, Forten Purvis and her sisters were founding members of the Philadelphia Female Anti-Slavery Society, and members of the American Equal Rights Association, where Harriet served as a member of the executive committee. Affluent and educated, the sisters helped lay the groundwork for the first National Woman’s Rights Convention in October 1854 and helped organize the Philadelphia Suffrage Association in 1866.
Margaretta Forten (1806 -1875)
Forten was an educator and abolitionist. She and her mother, Charlotte Forten and her sister, Harriet, were founders and members of the interracial Philadelphia Female Anti-Slavery Society.
Harriet “Hattie” Purvis (1810-1875)
A niece of the Forten family of reformers, Purvis was active in the Pennsylvania Woman Suffrage Association and a member of their executive committee. Between 1883 and 1900, she served as a delegate to the National Woman Suffrage Association. She also served as Superintendent of Work among Colored People for the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, championing reforms.
Sarah Remond (1826-1887)
Remond was an antislavery lecturer and physician. The Remonds were a noted abolitionist family, well known in antislavery circles and, as a child, Sarah had attended abolitionist meetings. She was an activist in the Salem and Massachusetts Antislavery Societies, and a member of the American Equal Rights Association, where she served as a guest lecturer, and toured the Northeast campaigning for universal suffrage. Discouraged by the split in the women’s suffrage movement after the Civil War, she left the United States, becoming an expatriate in Florence, Italy, in 1866, where she studied medicine.
Frances Ellen Watkins Harper (1825-1911)
Frances Ellen Watkins Harper was an early abolitionist and women’s suffrage leader. She was one of the few African American women present at conferences and meetings about these issues between 1854 and 1890. She also wrote protest poetry that referenced which included musings about voting rights.
Josephine St. Pierre Ruffin (1842 –1924)
Ruffin was a Massachusetts journalist and noted abolitionist before the Civil War. She joined the Massachusetts Woman Suffrage Association in 1875 and was affiliated with the American Woman Suffrage Association. She was a black woman’s club leader in Massachusetts and the wife of George L. Ruffin, one of the woman’s suffrage representatives from Boston in the state legislature. She challenged the opposition to woman’s suffrage in Boston, writing an editorial co-authored with her daughter, Florida Ridley.
Nannie Helen Burroughs (1879-1961)
Burroughs, an educator, church leader and suffrage supporter, devoted her life to empowering black women. She helped establish the National Association of Colored Women in 1896 and founded the National Training School for Women and Girls in 1909.
Ella Baker (1903-1986)
Civil rights activist and freedom fighter, Ella Baker played a key role in some of the most influential organizations of the time, including the NAACP, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. In 1964, SNCC helped create Freedom Summer, an effort to both focus national attention on Mississippi’s racism and to register black voters. Baker and many of her contemporaries believed that voting was one key to freedom.

[ florence pugh, cis woman, twenty-five ] Let’s give a warm welcome to one of Sparkwood’s finest, YELENA BELOVA !! Before coming here, she once lived on the pages of MARVEL. Though now they currently spend most of their time as a YOUTH COUNSELOR. If you ask the townsfolk about what they are like, you will hear that they are CLEVER but also DEADPAN. If they had a theme song it would be BOYSHIT - MADISON BEER.
you can find the rest of my muses here !
TRIGGER WARNINGS: kidnapping.
the picture perfect family living in sparkwood, virginia, that’s what everyone saw when they looked at the family of four. it was also the same lie that yelena grew up naively believing, completely in the dark about the fact that she had been kidnapped as a baby from the hospital that she was born in. it wasn’t the first kidnapping that alexei and melina had carried out either, yelena had an older sister who was passed off as the couple’s child as well. even though the memories of her childhood were eventually tarnished, they were the happiest days of yelena’s life. she had a family who loved her and was carefree. what more could she ask for? years later she still finds herself wishing she would have remained in the dark about it all.
but their happy little family fell apart when she was seven years old, her childhood home unexpectedly stormed by police. while alexei was arrested, melina somehow managed to flee despite being shot during the showdown. both yelena and her sister, natasha, were taken in and explained what occurred. yelena felt as if her whole world had imploded at that moment, her child mind not being able to wrap her mind around it all. if her family had always been fake, why did it feel so real to her? despite entering the foster system together, it wasn’t long before yelena and natasha were separated. being taken away from her sister set something off inside yelena, causing her to rebel against her new adoptive parents.
at their wits end, the wealthy couple that had adopted the little girl decided to send her off to a girls’ reformatory school in washington d.c. it was at this school that yelena found herself being excluded by most girls her age, the girl growing numb and angry that everything she had wanted had been taken from her. she distracted herself with school and practicing ballet, two things she excelled in. she would spend most of her free time imagining how different her life would have been if the crime of her ‘parents’ hadn’t been uncovered. when she finally turned seventeen years old and was prepared to move onto college, she decided to pursue an academic track that would allow her to pursue a career in social work. she became detached from her trauma and decided she would use her anger as a tool to help children who faced similar fates as she had. after she graduated from university, she decided to move back to sparkwood on a whim.
she ended up opening a youth shelter for girls, whether being runaways or orphans, that was next door to the orphanage in town. she wanted to help provide these girls with a life that she wished that she had.
HEADCANONS.
sometimes yelena still finds herself walking past her childhood home, wishing one day she would see her ‘parents’ or natasha standing there as well.
she has no intention of having children of her own and for other hormonal / medical reasons, ended up getting a hysterectomy.
she sometimes wishes she had pursued her passion of ballet, but still does dance a bit by asking her friend eunyoo to use her studio when it’s empty.
even though she is a bit deadpan and struggles getting in touch with her emotions, she softens up whenever she’s around the girls at her shelter.
humor is her main source of coping, she refuses to address her problems via therapy but will sure crack jokes about her trauma.
she is bisexual.
hates wearing restrictive clothing and prefers to be comfortable and practical in what she wears.
she has a tiny black widow tattoo behind her ear.
the queen of inventing creative ways of styling her ponytail(s).

Use the ones you like, and ignore the ones you don’t or don’t do it for ya. Thank you!
KEEP THE SUGGESTIONS COMING SO I CAN ADD THEM AND IT GROWS IN SIZE!

IMPORTANT NOTE: due to my current workload, my replying ability is much more limited. if you really need a writing partner who can give you more than 2-3 replies a week, we may not be compatible, at least for this season.
below you can find a list of some basic plot ideas i'm looking for, some face claims i am wanting to use, and some face claims i'm wanting to play against.
if you are interested in any of these (plots or fcs - i am always up for plotting something not on this list) you can message me (here or discord - thedrewdawg#1337). i will typically play a male or nonbinary - it's pretty rare that outside a mumu situation that i will pick up a female. i rp on both tumblr (via my mumu writing blog) or on discord.
i am also up for platonic/family relationships too!!
putting this under the cut because it got way too long :)
celebrities. there are a few plots floating around about former coworkers or former 'we dated for the publicity and now we have to work together' plots that i'm SUPER interested in doing.
classic hateship. we hate each other for some reason or another but oops there's also MASSIVE sexual tension and we can't keep our hands off of each other. bonus points if they are both 'heartless' but they are learning to trust each other with their hearts.
workplace angst. i have been watching too much greys tbh, but i love the dynamics of people who have demanding jobs and work a lot and the job and their coworkers are basically like all they really have going on. would be cool as a mumu, but fine as a solo plot too
some more light/summer/fluffy stuff. one muse is home for the summer and meets someone working a summer job and they intend for it to only last until school is back in session but they don't want to stop? high school sweethearts who rekindle the old flame now that they are both older. a kid who has to take summer classes and thinks their tutor is nerdy but also kinda cute? honestly, any of these things.
angst avenue. something super angsty like this because i am a masochist. honestly anything super heartwrenching i'm probably all about.
ghosts. idk just haunting, maybe someone falls in love with a ghost. love a spooky romance. or like ghost hunters? i've been wanting to try out some more horror-esque stuff.
heroes/antiheroes/villains. would love to work out these dynamics. would also work well for a mumu *insert eyes emoji*
secret relationships. who doesn't love a secret relationship? maybe you are my best friend's ex that he's still hung up on but we are really good together.
ASSASSINS. we love a good assassins plot. and they don't kill each other because, well, they are in love. maybe they used to work on the same side and one of them defected?? ugh idk just give me some badasses with drama and lots of love.
post-apocalyptic. this has been on my wanted list for a while but ya know the basic there are zombies taking over the world stuff.
supernatural shit. i only really know/have interest in rping witches and vamps and maaaaybe human hunters. would literally love to do some kind of mumu with maybe 3-5 other people? idk i just haven't really had a legit spn plot in a million years.
