Hello hello! I love your blog and everything you write, and i just wanted to request a headcanon list on how shanks would act as the reader’s dad, if that’s alright with you?

HE'D BE A DEADBEAT DAD LIKE THE REST OF HIS CREW

Jk :) let's get into it. 

Shanks does not know how to be a father. He’s always been the cool uncle role, and he doesn’t really understand that he can’t do that as a dad.

You want dessert for dinner? Okay. You wanna climb up to the crow’s nest? Okay. You want a sip of beer? Okay. Two sips? Build that tolerance! He lets you do just about anything you want. 

That being said, he is fiercely protective of you to anyone else. He knows you’ve got a bounty on your head for being his child, and he keeps you close to him on the islands you visit. It’s just about the only rule he has: don’t leave his sight on an island. 

He even gets funny about his crew watching you on islands. Not that he thinks they’ll do anything, or that they couldn’t handle themselves if something happened. He just gets nervous when you’re away from him in a foreign place. 

There are a few places this doesn’t pertain to, of course. Places he’s well known and well loved, like Elbaf, he doesn’t mind letting you go off with a local he trusts. But it’s rare.

If anyone insults you in an attempt to get under his skin…bad call. Instant annihilation. No mercy. You can disrespect him, but you don’t disrespect his friends. And you definitely don’t disrespect his child.

When you’re young, everyone on the ship teaches you how to do their respective jobs. By the time you’re ten, you could handle a sloop all on your own. 

He’s always supportive of your dreams, whatever they may be. He wants you to choose your own path, and never pressures you to make a decision. He just asks that you be honest with him. He promises to support you no matter what. If you want to stay with the crew, you’re welcome to. If you want to go find your own, he’d buy you a ship to get you started. 

As long as you stick with your decision. He didn’t raise a flip-flopper of a kid.

He’s always there, too. You don’t know how, but he has this sixth sense of when you’re in trouble. And he’s always there. Even when you don’t know it. When you survive a battle you definitely shouldn’t have survived, or you get free from a sticky situation. He’s always there, keeping you safe from the shadows.

Shanks was the kind of man who could never sit still. He was always seeking out the next great adventure, and it didn’t matter where it was as long as you were with him. He had been a ruler of the Grand Line for 10 years now, and he had been sailing it for even longer. His life felt complete. He didn’t think he needed much more out of it, until today. 

He could hear your laugh mix with a child’s giggle, and his eyes scanned the beach for you. His gaze fell upon your ebony skin, glistening in the sunlight. A small child clung to your side as you waded deeper into the ocean, jumping over the approaching waves with the young girl. His heart quickened at the sight, and he watched the two of you play in the surf with a growing desire inside of him. 

Shanks had always been wary of children. He had Luffy and Uta, but the thought of having his own absolutely terrified him. Too many things could go wrong on the open sea for a child to be aboard. He would know - having been a member of the Roger Pirates his entire life. 

But watching you grip the hands of the pigtailed girl and lift her over the waves, both of you shouting with glee, made him feel a little different. His heartstrings tugged, wanting that kind of life for himself. Maybe he wasn’t as “untameable as the Grand Line”, like all of his crew mates jested. Maybe a soft and quiet island life was the next adventure he could find himself taking. You’d be with him, and that’s all he would need. 

His body moved on its own, and he was in front of you before he knew it. He could see you smiling down at him, and he knew this was the life the both of you deserved. He bent down to the child and offered his hand to her. 

“Do you mind if I play with you all?” he asked the girl.

The child giggled in response and took his hand. The three of you stood together, swinging the young girl over the waves. Your laughter was the sweetest thing he had ever heard, and it blended perfectly with a child’s squeals of delight and the sound of the ocean crashing against the shore. 

Yes, perhaps it was time to start a new legacy. One that would outlive and outlast his own notoriety.

this behemoth of a comic is finally done - and just in time for zoros birthday huehue. initially i wanted to make a zolu introspective from an outsider POV and was like you know who would have really funny input on this … mihawk. and then it spiraled into seven pages of mishanks sitting and talking. i thought it would be funny if mishanks ended up doing self imposed couples therapy the day mihawk brought luffys bounty bc well. its kind of hilarious to think abt mihawk realizing shanks was onto something all those years ago after he meets zoro and luffy. like sure this new generation is batshit crazy but my god are they cooking. anyways. cheers. get some kids
